Pick an album you love or used to listen to a lot. Link a lesser known song in that album.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think Life's Rich Pageant is my favorite album with Superman being my favorite song.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Green Day American Idiot. Extraordinary Girl.

Cugel's avatar

Certainly a fine REM song, I bought their first 3 albums, and figured I had enough of them. (Life's Rich Pageant is their 4th)

MoriBear's avatar

100% agree. LRP was okay, but was the beginning of the end (for me). Steve Albini produced, iirc, which gave them the "big" sound. and I think he made stipe's vocals more understandable, which was anti-REM ;-)

MoriBear's avatar

hey, where's this orange avatar thing come from?!?

SGBear's avatar

Blues Traveler - Travelers & Thieves was a kick ass album. Later. Sweet Pain resonated with me.

Mountain Cry is still a favorite

Scootie's avatar

The Joshua Tree by U2. One Tree Hill is by far my favorite song on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfKhVV-7lxI

heyalumnigo's avatar

Oh this is a great album as well. I think I listened to this all my sophomore year in HS.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Scootie, I will see your One Tree Hill, and raise you Running to Stand Still...my favorite U2 song of all time

paulie's avatar

that might be my favorite U2 song of all time, still get chills when listening to it

That album was my roommate's sleep-time playlist, so I listened to it a lot the first two years of college.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Artist: Tool

Album: Lateralus

Song: Lateralus

Most people have heard Schism, as that was the single released for that album, I believe Lateralus is the best song on that album. It is 9 minutes long of greatness.

g.oso's avatar

for me it's Reflection.

GoldenSD81's avatar

To be honest, that whole album is complete. If that album were a football offense, it would have gone the whole game scoring TDs and FGs and never punting.

I also like the companion songs Parabol and Parabola. The Patient is also really good. The Grudge really opens the album up and sets the tone.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Artist: The Roots

Album: Things Fall Apart

Song: Act Too (Featuring Common)

Great album and most people have heard and recognize the single You Got Me but I love Act Too.

Honorable mention, Step Into the Realm.

Terence's avatar

Siamese Dream by Smashing Pumpkins is my most listened to album of all time.

Mayonaise is my favorite track from the album but isn't one of the singles.

This is my favorite version of that - which is an acoustic version they released with their VHS tape called Vieuphoria

Possibly one of the 3 or 4 best songwriters on the planet right now and, along with his musician wife Amanda Shires, a Nashville staple. Newly sober and reflected in the lyrics, this 2013 album was a tour de force breakout for the former Drive-by Trucker guitarist. He recently took a breather from writing and recorded Georgia Blue, an album released last week comprised entirely of covers (REM's Driver 8, JB's It's a Man's, Man's World, Midnight Train to GA)...he's hotter than Hansel right now.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

We didn't have many CDs, and a Shania Twain one ended up being played on all of our roadtrips when I was growing up. The most famous songs from that album are probably "From this Moment On," "You're Still the One," "Man! I Feel Like a Woman," and "That Don't Impress Me Much." So, a lesser known song: "Don't Be Stupid"

Apparently, my brother's friends are impressed by how many Shania Twain songs he knows haha

sycasey's avatar

Not a bad track on there.

Berkelium97's avatar

This. It's been a while since I've listened to that album, but it was a favorite for a couple years.

sycasey's avatar

I've gotten back into it recently. Holds up. Weezer fell off later, but those first two albums are great.

I enjoy some of Weezer’s newer stuff, but the Song Exploder episode with Rivers was a terrifying look at his process.

Depeche Mode was the first concert I went to - I paid, too.

Terence's avatar

the reason i make the distinction is that i went to a handful of concerts with my parents (like Peter Paul and Mary at the Hollywood Bowl) and then saw some concerts like at the LA County Fair or Kenny Loggins at Six Flags. Depeche Mode was the first time I traveled somewhere for the concert

This is the Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drill. You are participating in the largest earthquake safety drill in U.S. history. Practice now so you can protect yourself during a real earthquake.

This is an earthquake drill. Right now, DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON.

Unless you are driving,

DROP where you are, onto your hands and knees. This position protects you from being knocked down and also allows you to stay low and crawl to shelter if nearby.

COVER your head and neck with one arm and hand

If a sturdy table or desk is nearby, crawl underneath it for shelter

If no shelter is nearby, crawl next to an interior wall (away from windows)

Stay on your knees; bend over to protect vital organs

HOLD ON until shaking stops

Under shelter: hold on to it with one hand; be ready to move with your shelter if it shifts

No shelter: hold on to your head and neck with both arms and hands.

Now look around. What objects might fall or be thrown at you in an earthquake, that you should secure in place now?

Finally, strong earthquakes may generate a tsunami. If you're near the beach during an earthquake, DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON, then walk quickly to high ground when the shaking stops.

This drill is over. Visit ShakeOut.org for simple steps to help you survive and recover from a major earthquake, including how to secure your space. Thank you for taking part in ShakeOut!

MoriBear's avatar

Earthquakes are FAKE! I don't want a government agency telling me what to do. In my day, we stood up to earthquakes! (well, not literally...they do have a tendency to knock us down; but then we got up again...they're never gonna keep us down!)

I'm gonna give a shout out to See again. I almost finished S2 last night (one ep to go) and I REALLY wanted finish, but it was too late. Kinda wanna watch it now before my 3:30 call because otherwise I think it'll be too late to watch tonight (after the Dubs).

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Started Squid Game...trying to figure out if I should switch it up and watch ep 2 in Korean with English subtitles, but I really enjoyed the first...it was nuts.

Another Korean series on Netflix that is wildly different than the norm is "My Name" about the daughter of a gangster who witnesses his murder. She joins her dad's gang and infiltrates the police (a la The Departed). It is intense, ridiculously violent and, through 5 episodes, outstanding

DC Trojan's avatar

I think Netflix was trying to encourage me to watch this, maybe I'll give it a go.

it ended up being a lot more entertaining than I thought. The end was kind of dumb though and the depiction of the westerners was ridiculous and stupid

"crapping out" is a bit harsh. they did take it 7 games in the Finals. but yeah, that push the last couple of weeks prob didn't do them any good. nor the effort needed to get past the thunder after being down 3 to 1 themselves...

I wonder what it’s like being an undergrad at Cal Tech. I always imagine it’s like Real Genius, making lasers for giant Jiffy Pop containers

Terence's avatar

I went to summer camp there for 3 summers - which convinced me that I wasn't smart enough for STEM. (I wonder if I would have taken science if I hadn't gotten my ass kicked for 3 years in high school)

But it was similar enough to Real Genius. They had a thing that they would give you as much wood + tools + building materials as you wanted so you could build up structures in your dorm room. Because we were CalTech student dorms over the summer a ton of them had built up lofts and built in bookcases, attics and cubby holes and stuff

Also you could paint and repaint the dorm hallways. They had big tanks of liquid nitrogen for student use, and they had all these economics/psych studys going on all summer where you could earn between $50 and $200 for 2 hours of playing a stock market game.

It was a fun time to be mainly unsupervised (oh my god so many people hooked up for the first time) but the classwork was too hard for me.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

there was a moment where i thought i wanted to go there. but i realized that there were hardly any humanities taught there.

Lots of Love for UCLA. Will their run in the tourney result in a Final Four appearance?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

UCLA is f-ing dangerous and their Final 4 run last year really shouldn't come as too much of a surprise in hindsight...a Mick Cronin team that plays awesome D and is loaded with Mickey D AA's, with J & J able to create O for themselves...Cronin didn't really have to dial up many plays. They'll be tough.

goldenone's avatar

He knows something the rest of us don't

heyalumnigo's avatar

That the NCAA will rule that Jaylen Brown is allowed to play in any 3 Pac-12 games we choose?

Newellbany's avatar

This would be fun - kinda like when NHL teams send down some of their second team players to their AHL affiliate if that club has a legit chance at winning the Calder Cup.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I just realized that the Pac-12 refs will call him for 5 charging fouls and he'll be on the bench in the first 10 min.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Exactly...love Jaylen of course, but he was a player control foul waiting to happen.

Berkelium97's avatar

That a mid-season firing of Fox will salvage the season and let us claw back up to 10th?

Newellbany's avatar

Hang on. Cal improved tremendously - TREMENDOUSLY - in Fox's first year, in which he inherited the smoldering ashes of the Wyking Jones era. Cal went from 3 league wins to 8, with arguably fewer parts. This was the result of coaching, and it made me think that Fox is a high floor (maybe low ceiling) coach.

Then last year was a weird year as a result of the covid - they were practicing outside on a f'ing tennis court and such. I'm willing to throw that whole year out of the sample. If you do that, we're back to a place where we all thought that Fox could at least stabilize the program and return it to respectability. I'm not yet sure that won't happen.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Please excuse my East Coast resident friend here, as these games tip off much too late for him to watch, let alone actually pay the attention that is needed. "Improved tremendously" is a titch of a stretch - they were better simply by having a competent, mid-Major-level coach actually do some semblance of coaching - thus, they finally came out closer to the middle-side of competent....but they were still sub par.

As for the COVID excuse, come on man!!...this is a bad team with a poor structure on O and poor understanding of fundamental defensive principles...plus, they are seriously short on P12 caliber players, especially those that can create any semblance of offense - the only one they had will be filling it up off I-8 in the Viejas Arena.

Another Cal revenue-sport roster filled with good kids that try hard but just don't make enough plays to overcome the coaching handicap they face.

Hey Newellbany....https://youtu.be/xsZPWsVNTqo

Newellbany's avatar

I beg to differ with that link, Jimmy Chitwood. Crazy is an inexhaustible and endlessly renewable resource here on the DBD.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

There is a scenario where the infusion of a couple of freshmen recruits at the wing position, we'll call them Al-&-An for short, arrive in town and actually have a basic understanding of fundamental defensive principles. This allows Fox to dial up the D to make each game just ugly enough to scrape out a few wins, despite a nightly struggle to score 60...

Terence's avatar

The difference between 10th and 12th is probably like 1-2 games anyway.

Newellbany's avatar

I impulse-bought some new Cal gear this morning because I definitely don't have enough already (but don't ask Dr. Ms. Newellbany) and I suppose there's a chance that they could give the USC game a late start so I'd better have a new Cal sweatshirt
