Alec Baldwin discharges weapon that was loaded with real bullets on set. Kills director of photography, wounds director. ugh.

That armorer failed at their only task.

DC Trojan's avatar

It is also incumbent upon someone holding a gun to make sure, EVERY TIME, that there isn't a round chambered and the safety is on before they start fucking around with it, pointing it towards anyone else, etc. You simply cannot compromise on that.

paulie's avatar

This story is absolutely insane. Just horrible.

Newellbany's avatar

Of course it's worse for the woman who was killed and those who loved her, but the photos in the Times of a totally distraught - wrecked, really - Alec Baldwin outside the police station are heart wrenching.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

A Brandon Lee incident...just awful.

GoldenSD81's avatar

First thing I thought of as well.

heyalumnigo's avatar

The other one I remember is Jon-Erik Hexum. Was on Voyagers and some other shows in the early 80s. I remember they were taking 5 because something was taking longer than planned and he had a prop gun. Held it up to his head and said jokingly said something to the effect that he was going to shoot himself in the head due to the delays. The gun wasn't loaded but the pressure from the blanks right up against his head was enough to kill him.

Steph drops 45 as the Dubs beat the Clips

https://twitter.com/warriors/status/1451410676539297796

From a distance, the Warriors' uniforms looked like the Knicks' mid-90s unis

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

just watched most of the first quarter and the end of the game. even by Steph's standards those were some ridiculous shots he was making.

That 3 from near the half-court circle was nothing but bottoms

Dodgers win 11-2, we head back to the ATL with the Braves up 3-2.

goldenone's avatar

Taylor's 3 home run performance matches that of Mr. October in 1977

heyalumnigo's avatar

He had a chance to become CT4. Missed a hanging curve and was just out in front of it. Had HR distance.

Tangtpt's avatar

I saw that at-bat. He crushed that ball. You could see on the replay that his bat got all of that ball. Just a hair ahead of it, though.

paulie's avatar

Are the Braves gonna coug this series?

AndyPanda's avatar

Wither Sherzerer & Buehler getting the starts for the Dodgers, its a distinct possibility.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Depends on if Scherzer still has dead arm. I'm hoping on regular rest he'll be fine.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

ATL is hitting more than the Giants, so even with the dead arm, Los Doyers are gonna have to score some runs.

heyalumnigo's avatar

It looks like TT is starting to hit some. The key, like always, is Mookie or Seager.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Dune, it was excellent. I can’t wait for the second part.

Fire Starkey's avatar

seeing it tonight at the IMAX

DC Trojan's avatar

I actually think it might be worth it - it's beautifully shot.

GoldenSD81's avatar

It really is, I enjoyed it at home on my 82 inch and Sonos surround sound but if you can find it and watch it on IMAX, that is the way to go with this movie.

Berkelium97's avatar

I'm planning on buying a new living room tv in the next few months, and I may put off watching it until then so I can take full advantage of the visuals. I hear it's glorious with a proper, modern setup.

DC Trojan's avatar

It was good even on our relatively small television

DC Trojan's avatar

(the context here being my opinion that for most contemporary films, the argument to see them in a cinema is the sound not the screen)

goldenone's avatar

So far I've heard it's way better than the 1984 David Lynch directed effort.

GoldenSD81's avatar

That’s a low bar in terms of adaptation.

David Lynch’s Dune has attained a cult like following and people have come to enjoy it for what it is but it certainly isn’t a very good adaptation of the book.

Dune (2021) is a much more faithful adaptation. The score by Hans is wonderful, the cinematography is beautiful and the cast is very good.

I highly recommend it and I can’t wait for part 2.

Cugel's avatar

Uh, the problem with the movie is that's it's a really bad movie, not that's it's a bad adaptation. Lynch was 100% the wrong director for that project.

GoldenSD81's avatar

That movie did contain Dune like substance. It has Sting in it!

Lynch was definitely the wrong director for that project but he did manage to make something interesting, if bad.

Cugel's avatar

I joked back in the day, that the actor with the most life-like role was the hunter-killer.

Wiata78's avatar

That's quite a low standard. I remember going to see that with a friend of mine. Only minutes before Dune was to start, we walked in and found we were the only ones in the theater.

DC Trojan's avatar

It's much easier to follow what's going on - we watched it en famille and the 16 year old recoiled at the idea of trying to follow the whole story in a fraction of the time.

Berkelium97's avatar

I'm smoking two beef eye of rounds this afternoon: one heavily rubbed and one lightly rubbed. I was reading that heavy rubs provide more of a crust on the exterior that gives more seasoning flavor but blocks some of the smokey flavor, so I'm having a comparison to see whether I prefer more smokey or more seasoned. I've smoked beef several times previously, but I hadn't given thought to the effect of the rub on its ability to absorb smoke flavor.

Scootie's avatar

Turner's Kitchen had a sandwich special the other day that was smoked roast beef, aged white cheddar, avocado, onion dip coleslaw and A1 sauce. It was incredible.

Berkelium97's avatar

I'm already anticipating some fantastic sandwiches this weekend. And most of the remaining leftovers on Sunday will be incorporated into some sort of soup or stew.

pork shoulder is in the oven for tomorrow's tailgate. Come get yer pulled pork sammies with spicy pickles and slaw on Wonder Bread and wash it down with jalapeno mac n cheez.

Berkelium97's avatar

heyalumnigo's avatar

I also wish I weren't out of town these next two weekends. I guess it'll be $C for me.

you would be forced to watch the delights of a Cal-Colorado gridiron masterpiece so that likely will curb your enthusiasm a bit

Scootie's avatar

There is nothing preventing showing up for the tailgate and then bailing on the game. It's been known to have been done before.

Scootie's avatar

no no. this is not how it works. get yer pulled pork and mac and cheese on wonder bread sammies. Come ON.

Guilty as sin:

NEW YORK — Lev Parnas, a Florida businessman who is an associate of Rudolph W. Giuliani’s, was found guilty on Friday of using funds from a foreign investor to try to influence political candidates through campaign donations.

It took the federal jury in U.S. District Court in Manhattan less than a day to find that Parnas committed fraud through donations to several state and federal candidates that were bankrolled by a Russian financier. Parnas was also found guilty on counts related to a $325,000 donation in 2018 to a joint fundraising committee that supported then-President Donald Trump.

Cal Colorado Predictions

Berkelium97's avatar

Frustration, irritation, long stretches of nothing happening on offense. But I think we have a shot at winning this one. Cal 21, CU 10

BOOOOOOO!!!!! this man!!!!

Scootie's avatar

OK fine 31-20 Colorado.

Cugel's avatar

BOOOOOO!!!! This wo-man!!!!!!

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I boo myself regularly…I’m worried about our penchant for playing to the level of our opponent, & the Wazzu effort is still fresh…sigh.,.

goldenone's avatar

Honestly don't know what to think after reading Christopher's preview of the Colorado offense and defense. So this week I will refrain from predicting anything.

heyalumnigo's avatar

You do mean the Cal fans, right?

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

During this period of revenue sports malaise, unfortunately…tho if any adjustments made during the BYE actually stuck & weren’t just a one-off for the UO game, or if the Buffs really are inept on O, maybe the Bears pull out a comfortable W…but a home shutout can do wonders from a confidence perspective for CO…

Fire Starkey's avatar

Colorado's defense is decent but their offense sucks big time. Like, way worse than Cal's. That said, Cal has found a way to lose 4 games they shoulda/coulda won so...

Justbear's avatar

This will be the first time in many years that I had planned something during Cal football game time. I've had to miss games due to business trips, wedding, etc, but not something that I personally planned to do. I will be going to see my friend in San Diego just to hang out.

FiatSlug's avatar

You're a good friend.

Couple things: ironically enough this is the midway point in the quarter, and its been my easiest week yet. My MWF environmental science course only met once this week for a field trip, and I only really had a psychology midterm get in my way last Monday. This let me have Friday off, so I came home last night for an extra night at home and am typing from my humble abode.

2nd, been attending sports business events at SCU. This time it was former 49ers Chief of Community Marketing Reginald Duhe, who is a Cal alumnus and worked in the marketing/business side at Berkeley along with donor fundraising. Cool to see worlds connect.

3rd: this week's newspaper article will be on the SJ Sharks if anyone is interested. It should publish later today so I'll send it here when that's done

4th: Santa Clara at Cal MBB on Dec 11th announced for 6:00pm. Who knows I'll either be there as a fan or radio announcer, hope to see some of you there!

heyalumnigo's avatar

I love the Sharks. I'll keep an eye out for your article. Send it over.

19 - i hate multitasking but turns out i am good at it. but most people say it is not truly multi tasking but being good at context-switching.

my favorite Zen story about multitasking that i find endlessly hilarious:

Seung Sahn would say, "When you eat, just eat. When you read the newspaper, just read the newspaper. Don't do anything other than what you are doing."

One day a student saw him reading the newspaper while he was eating. The student asked if this did not contradict his teaching. Seung Sahn said, "When you eat and read the newspaper, just eat and read the newspaper."

paulie's avatar

This is a great Dad joke

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

yes, i use it on the kids all the time.

Berkelium97's avatar

I'll listen to music if I'm working with data or writing. It gets too distracting if I'm reading, however.

If I'm in a longer meeting where I mostly plan to listen, I'll work out or do some bike maintenance. I'm less likely to tune out if I can keep busy with some low-concentration tasks.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i assume the reference to Durga is because she has 10 arms and is usually depicted as doing many things at once.

our younger daughter is named Anika, which is an alternate name for Durga.

also, Durga is the most revered Hindu deity in Bengal and Durga Puja always falls around the same time as Diwali. growing up i really knew nothing about Diwali because we only celebrated Durga Puja.

in Kolkata, kids get a month off from school and it is a 4-7 day holiday. my family is in charge of funding the celebration in a small village where we are one of the major landholders but i have never been because it was always right after school started here in the US and it never made sense to take 2-3 wk trip right after summer vacation ended.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I used to be better at listening to a call and reading something else and being able to pay attention to the call. I seem to be worse at it now.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I would say that as I’ve aged, not to mention the repeated Cal football & basketball disappointments that have beaten me down cognitively, I definitely don’t multitask as well as I used to....but I can still handle a few things, especially if I can get organized prior...

TD_24's avatar

I'll rate myself a 15 on multi tasking. I make my name on this, you have to be adaptable to distractions. A common example for me is doing homework while watching, TV, youtube, twitch, or listening to music. They are seem like distractions and sometimes they are but its effective to get me in a good mindset to work unless I start bingewatching.

Newellbany's avatar

I used to have to attend most meetings in person. Now we do them from our desks. This means unless I've driving the meeting or presenting, I'm probably doing other shit during the meeting. Distractions are up, but maybe productivity is, too.

FiatSlug's avatar

I don't have that luxury. I don't drive meetings, but I am expected to provide background info on certain hot topics. I can be asked for info seemingly out of the blue.

Scootie's avatar

I'm going to be super pissed when I have to start going to in person meetings again. When else and I going to Crush Candy?

Newellbany's avatar

Speaking of crushes...I recall you having one on a hot consultant (I think) that you only became aware of because you were in regular in-person meetings together. So maybe this one cuts both ways?

FiatSlug's avatar

I am blissfully unaware of my strengths and shortcomings in multi-tasking. All I know is that I keep my boss and multiple others very happy with my job performance. I hope this means I do well with multi-tasking.

O.Overall's avatar

When I was a first year associate at my law firm I saw a guy in the crapper with a bunch of files he was reading while dropping a deuce. He came out of the stall and this older partner was like “Way to bill!!!”

AndyPanda's avatar

Probably around 14. I wish it was higher. It's an everyday norm, with multiple things going on at once. Remote work has cut down on side commotion, but not legitimate competing issues, in an increasingly complex world.

It's become so much the norm I find I have difficulty just focusing on one thing if there are gaps, like the 3-4 minute media interruptions in the flow of a game if I'm trying to just watch the game.

The thing I've observed is the need for this skill as an everyday skill, and one that is not being well-taught to most students. We see people trying to enter the real world who cannot function in an environment where they must balance multiple projects or responsibilities at the same time.

Cugel's avatar

Rate, hmmm... from 5 to 18 depending on what's going on, how sober I am, at least 2 cups of coffee... etc...

One thing that drives me INSANE about my wife - if she's on the phone just yakking away, she refuse to pause for a second to answer a question. Dives me nuts, I can't understand it, and yet she's perfectly fine interrupting me for anything she thinks in mildly important.

FiatSlug's avatar

You have double standards of your own, yes? That's her double standard. Let it go. Chalk it up to marital give and take.

DC Trojan's avatar

I can listen to music and work, that’s about it. These days I find it challenging even to both watch a game and tweet about it, far less have more than 1 game on. If I start posting on here or reading Twitter during a conference call, I’m not absorbing much of the meeting.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

16/19...I can talk to Newellbany on my cell as I walk to the store while chewing gum AND still pay attention to a ballgame...counts for something...

paulie's avatar

Like a -1. Maybe music on in the background but I get so scatterbrained trying to juggle things I literally have to tell myself “just do this, then move on”

goldenone's avatar

I'm fairly good at multitasking so maybe 16 or 17.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I typically never get Asian glow (except for one time when I drank MGD), so I figured I had plenty of alcohol dehydrogenase, but lately, I've been getting a rash after drinking, so I'm worried I've developed some kind of allergy to alcohol :( :( :(

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

this would be my worst nightmare.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

consequently i feel bad that this is happening to you. let's hope it goes away

Berkelium97's avatar

Does it happen with all types? Beer, wine, spirits, etc.?

heyalumnigo's avatar

It happens to me with any alcohol. Doesn't take much and I start to get warm, turn red, and start to feel my heart beat in my head. Less than a half a beer. Or maybe 1 shot.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I've just had beer and wine lately, so I may need to experiment.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

So, TBB, your problem is that beer and wine are much better suited to >.500 teams...they are more social, upbeat drinks...

1-5 after 6 mistake-riddled games demands a spirit of higher proof, preferably darker in color...a Jack Daniels, a Jim Beam, a Jameson...recommended in higher quantities, with no added ice or mixer.

1-5 demands Thelonious Monk-action.....straight, no chaser. Make it so TBB!!
