It's on the US and western allies to pursue a dogged course of pushing Russia out of Ukraine. If the US and western allies can help Ukraine strangle Russia's assault throughout the upcoming winter, all the better. It's probably the best possible scenario. There's been so much histrionics in the press it's hard to tell if that would be a fruitful path to ending the conflict or simply end up dragging it out for years.

I remember that game too. A thorough and complete beat down. But, I don’t think we were “expected” to win. The loses to Arizona and Colorado are especially noxious to me because we were expected to win. Colorado was especially bad.

The 2012 opening season loss to a mediocre post-Kaepernick Nevada was pretty bad though (that was the Memorial Stadium relaunch, with Maynard benched this first quarter as punishment for missing a tutoring session), in that sad final Tedford season. But at least it set the tone early!
Wilcox's teams are uniquely frustrating and at this point will just be scrapping to keep scores respectable, in Year 6 of building a program in which he should now be nearing his peak.
I will grant him that the primary reason right now is the offensive line. The most important position group for this team is by far its weakest. Not much you can do about that in-season (or maybe there is?), but he's the head coach and its a product of the last 6 years. And, I'm no brilliant football mind, but my gut says that we are simply losing to teams that are better coached.
Respectfully, sy, and I know I’m in the minority here, but I don’t think the COVID absences excuse away the Arizona loss. That Wildcats team was awful…even with the outbreak, Cal’s lack of a competent backup QB, a trend under Wilcox, was the real culprit. Plenty of schools in the country have a capable backup QB that can at least run the offense. Cal does not, as Glover could barely complete a pass.
I understand people giving Wilcox a pass, but personally that’s when I lost all faith in this staff. A healthy football program wins that game ugly. This program is not healthy.
That said - if he can hit on the next OC and produce even an average offense, this program can turn for the better rather quick. Hopefully he can.
Yep, I didn’t buy the Covid excuse for the Arizona loss and I still do not. That was a historically awful Arizona team and we should have been able to at least grind out an ugly win. Take out Covid and say Garbers misses that game due to an ankle sprain and we still lose.

IMO, more concerning is that with his accuracy and decision-making issues, it’s debatable whether Plummer is a starting P5 quarterback even at full strength. In a better program, he’s a solid backup….dunno, maybe they win at Tucson in ‘21 with him under center.
But he’s likely back next year for another season, and given Wilcox’s history, Jack Plummer is probably your 2023 starter in Berkeley.
Yeah he is serviceable at best. Would really be nice to have someone with some ability to scramble given our O line issues. It happens fairly often that he has a wide open running lane and ends up running around and throwing it away
I think in this day and age of college football, absent either an absolutely dominant O-line, or NFL talent all across the skill positions (or both), you really need a dual threat to make plays with both his arm and his legs.

And in the pandemic era, after the team already had major absences in 2020? Plus, you know, the City of Berkeley - Wilcox was very aware of the potential for issues, or at least he should have been.
It showed just a concerning lack of preparation for such a contingency on the part of the coaching staff. And if, at the end of the day, Glover is just not a Power 5 caliber QB (as is the case - he’s currently with his 4th school as backup for Memphis), then that’s also on the staff.
Yep, Glover was a grad transfer so not only has Wilcox failed to recruit and coach up a competent HS QB, he doubled down with recruiting a poor grad transfer QB. Once it was obvious that Glover was struggling we just kept him in the game rather than giving someone else a chance to try to spark the offense a bit.
Heck I remember Millner had that insane highlight two point conversion flip that was on ESPN when he was in high school. Maybe the dude can create. I mean, give him a shot.
At this point, for this year, it seems like a lost season. May as well play Millner. I mean, I am fully aware that Wilcox will not do that, but why not at this point?
But that Arizona team was horrid…definitely worse than this Colorado squad - the Buffs record and poor counting stats are in part due to playing just a brutal schedule (TCU, at Minn, Air Force, UCLA, at Or State). And Cal’s performance in the desert made their Cheez-It bowl effort look good. Tedford wins that game by 2 scores, even with the absences and backup QB.
I just can’t get past the backup QB thing…THAT was the true culprit. To have your QB2 be THAT unprepared to see meaningful action is a major, major red flag. And to see Musgrave continue to try and run his normal offense? Please…

As the years go by it will get more frustrating. I'm starting to age (over 50 now) and seeing Cal perform like this hurts. Time continues to move on. I never thought when I was a senior and 22 that Cal would not have gone to the Rose Bowl by now. My Dad was one of the "Rose Bowl before I die" folks. Well, he died in 2018. Now I'm looking at maybe 30 more years and will we ever make it?

Agreed. In 2019 I could understand and sympathize with the struggles of a third-string, true freshman QB starting his first game on the road against an 11-win Utah team. But a grad transfer backup QB playing like that against a team riding a 20-game losing streak is unacceptable. Worse yet, the RB corps was intact and yet Musgrave kept insisting on having Glover slinging incompletions all over the field.
My thinking is UCLA success, since it is "The Number 1 Public University," makes our case that academic reputation and a competitive football program are not inversely related.

It feels like USC was a factory for transfer QBs throughout the Helton era. Everywhere you looked there was a former Trojan playing QB for some random east coast team.
One of Helton's real skills was finding decent QBs, having them get injured behind a porous offensive line, and then somehow making them worse or leaving them on the bench through recovery. I suppose he only ruined Max Brown's confidence rather than also getting him injured.

Statistically, the game looked very one-sided with the Dukes (10-6) outshooting the Bears (4-9) 17-2. In reality, most of those shots came on second and third attempts inside the circle, and Cal's defense was up to the task.
EUGENE, Ore. – Keely Roy scored on an 83rd-minute penalty kick to give the California women's soccer team a 1-1 tie with Oregon on Sunday on Papé Field.

The Bears (15-1) got out to a comfortable lead early in the game, heading into halftime with a 12-6 advantage. Sophomore Roberta Valera scored four goals and added one assist for five points in the game.
Valera snapped a four-goal Colonials streak late in the third quarter, and the Bears would go on to score nine more in a row to close out the match. Thirteen different players scored for Cal in the contest.

I've never ridden it but there's a shuttle that goes from the Foggy Bottom main campus up to the other campus. A friend knew some of the softball players years ago and would go up to watch some of the games.
BERKELEY – California men's basketball alumnus Bill McClintock was inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame during a gala at Pauley Ballroom on Friday night.
A forward for the Golden Bears, McClintock was a member of Cal's 1959 NCAA championship squad and the 1960 NCAA runner-up team. He totaled eight points in the Bears' 71-70 victory over West Virginia in the '59 title game and started for Cal the following season. A two-time all-conference selection, he earned honorable mention All-America honors as a junior and third-team All-America recognition as a senior. McClintock received the Nibs Price Award as Cal's MVP in 1960-61 and the team's Most Inspirational Award in 1959-60. He finished his career with 740 rebounds (8.8 rpg), which ranked second in school history at the time (now 10th). He also ranks 11th on Cal's season rebounding list with 289 from 1959-60 (10.6 rebounds per game) and grabbed a career-best 20 rebounds at UCLA in 1961. As a senior, he led the Bears in scoring (15.0 points per game) and rebounding (10.6 RPG).
BERKELEY – California volleyball (7-12, 0-9 Pac-12) returned to Haas Pavilion on Friday night after two weeks on the road, hosting the surging USC Trojans (16-4, 8-1), who entered the weekend as one of the nation's leading offensive teams. The Bears kept things competitive and clinched their first Pac-12 set in nearly a month before falling 3-1 to the Trojans.
As part of Cal's Pride Night, the Bears donated a portion of each ticket sold to Friday night's match to the LGBTQ Center in Oakland.
BERKELEY – California volleyball (7-13, 0-10 Pac-12) closed out their final home weekend in October on Sunday with an early-afternoon matchup against UCLA (10-9, 4-6), hoping to build off of their improved play on Friday with a victory against the Bruins. Ultimately, it was the latter who found themselves in the win column at the end of the day, out-performing the Bears on both offense and defense in a 3-0 sweep.
Although junior Lydia Grote started off the match with two straight kills, the Bruins quickly seized control of the set by posting a pair of scoring runs worth five and four points, respectively, to go up by six. Cal accumulated points at a steady pace throughout the rest of the set, aided by freshman Mikayla Hayden and senior Sydney Lilomaiava, who posted two blocks apiece; however, UCLA kept pace to stay ahead, eventually clinching the first set 25-19.
Marshawn called out the fans, but you know what, if you consistently put out a crap team what do you expect? I do recall how wild Memorial was for the games when Marshawn was there, but man we are so far from having anything remotely as exciting and fun to watch as that. It just makes me sad and angry to watch Cal games this year!
But watching the product on the field is only part of the experience. Other draws include hanging out with friends, enjoying the atmosphere, pre-game tailgating, seeing events like Forsett and Lynch getting inducted into the HoF. If I'm attending games in person I'd rather watch an okay team that sells out every game and has an electric atmosphere than a great team in a 50% full stadium (e.g. the mausoleum across the bay during peak Shaw).
We may not be able to field a good football team, but there are plenty of things that can be done to try to build an enjoyable atmosphere that will put butts in the seats (not that the AD seems to be putting much effort into that, though...).

All I remember is that Sonos was simply going to cut support for that generation of speaker and people lost their minds. Was working on the computer Friday and Saturday nights, and Showtime showed some horror flicks that I watched…I’m not a horror buff by any means…
Friday: Wrong Turn (2021 version) - interesting premise, could have been executed (no pun intended) much better. Gory and violent, but at the end of the day, felt underwhelmed.
Saturday: X (2022) - This one was fascinating, and actually received some critical acclaim following a screening at the South x Southwest Film Festival. Set in rural Texas in 1979, there’s definitely some Texas Chainsaw Massacre-vibes, and it offers an interesting, grainy look into the world of porn as seen in the horror flick. A decent film, with plenty of gore.
These two were definitely NOT good for the whole family, though neither is watching Musgrave’s Cal offense, so I guess there’s that…
Saw Tar yesterday. Best new release I've seen so far this year. Cate Blanchett is brilliant, one of a handful of actresses who could have carried a film of that magnitude.
Worse yet, golden…we may not even get a Sun Bowl…

The MS Dixie is a classic. I think there are different tours for various areas of the lake.
If you're looking for an easy hike, Eagle Rock gets you 200 ft above the lake for some nice views in a short amount of time.
if you have never been to Tahoe here are some suggestions with a little bit of a drive
- emerald bay is a very scenic spot around 7 o'clock
- sunnyside is a great spot for food/drink w/ a view around 9 o'clock
- alpine meadows has nice hikes around 10 o'clock
- sand harbor is a nice beach with great view and a small state park around 2 o'clock

The 2012 opening season loss to a mediocre post-Kaepernick Nevada was pretty bad though (that was the Memorial Stadium relaunch, with Maynard benched this first quarter as punishment for missing a tutoring session), in that sad final Tedford season. But at least it set the tone early!
Wilcox's teams are uniquely frustrating and at this point will just be scrapping to keep scores respectable, in Year 6 of building a program in which he should now be nearing his peak.
I will grant him that the primary reason right now is the offensive line. The most important position group for this team is by far its weakest. Not much you can do about that in-season (or maybe there is?), but he's the head coach and its a product of the last 6 years. And, I'm no brilliant football mind, but my gut says that we are simply losing to teams that are better coached.
There was a COVID excuse for Arizona '21. There are no excuses this time. We're losing because of how poorly formed the roster is.

That Wildcats team was awful…even with the outbreak, Cal’s lack of a competent backup QB, a trend under Wilcox, was the real culprit. Plenty of schools in the country have a capable backup QB that can at least run the offense. Cal does not, as Glover could barely complete a pass.
I understand people giving Wilcox a pass, but personally that’s when I lost all faith in this staff. A healthy football program wins that game ugly. This program is not healthy.
That said - if he can hit on the next OC and produce even an average offense, this program can turn for the better rather quick. Hopefully he can.

IMO, more concerning is that with his accuracy and decision-making issues, it’s debatable whether Plummer is a starting P5 quarterback even at full strength. In a better program, he’s a solid backup….dunno, maybe they win at Tucson in ‘21 with him under center.
But he’s likely back next year for another season, and given Wilcox’s history, Jack Plummer is probably your 2023 starter in Berkeley.

Yep, Glover was a grad transfer so not only has Wilcox failed to recruit and coach up a competent HS QB, he doubled down with recruiting a poor grad transfer QB. Once it was obvious that Glover was struggling we just kept him in the game rather than giving someone else a chance to try to spark the offense a bit.
I don't remember if it was Millner or Zack Johnson who was also unavailable for that game.. but pretty sure at least one of them was available.

BERKELEY - The No. 2 California men's water polo team held No. 19 George Washington scoreless for the final 10:51 of the contest, defeating the Colonials 24-10 Saturday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Bears (15-1) got out to a comfortable lead early in the game, heading into halftime with a 12-6 advantage. Sophomore Roberta Valera scored four goals and added one assist for five points in the game.
Valera snapped a four-goal Colonials streak late in the third quarter, and the Bears would go on to score nine more in a row to close out the match. Thirteen different players scored for Cal in the contest.
TIL: GW even has athletic facilities. Apparently, they've got facilities in Foxhall (next to Berkley [sic] and beyond Georgetown.

I used to drive by that all time when I would use Foxhall road for commuting purposes... and yet if you'd asked me I'd probably have assumed it was for Georgetown.
I've never ridden it but there's a shuttle that goes from the Foggy Bottom main campus up to the other campus. A friend knew some of the softball players years ago and would go up to watch some of the games.

BERKELEY – California men's basketball alumnus Bill McClintock was inducted into the Cal Athletic Hall of Fame during a gala at Pauley Ballroom on Friday night.
A forward for the Golden Bears, McClintock was a member of Cal's 1959 NCAA championship squad and the 1960 NCAA runner-up team. He totaled eight points in the Bears' 71-70 victory over West Virginia in the '59 title game and started for Cal the following season. A two-time all-conference selection, he earned honorable mention All-America honors as a junior and third-team All-America recognition as a senior. McClintock received the Nibs Price Award as Cal's MVP in 1960-61 and the team's Most Inspirational Award in 1959-60. He finished his career with 740 rebounds (8.8 rpg), which ranked second in school history at the time (now 10th). He also ranks 11th on Cal's season rebounding list with 289 from 1959-60 (10.6 rebounds per game) and grabbed a career-best 20 rebounds at UCLA in 1961. As a senior, he led the Bears in scoring (15.0 points per game) and rebounding (10.6 RPG).

BERKELEY – California volleyball (7-12, 0-9 Pac-12) returned to Haas Pavilion on Friday night after two weeks on the road, hosting the surging USC Trojans (16-4, 8-1), who entered the weekend as one of the nation's leading offensive teams. The Bears kept things competitive and clinched their first Pac-12 set in nearly a month before falling 3-1 to the Trojans.
As part of Cal's Pride Night, the Bears donated a portion of each ticket sold to Friday night's match to the LGBTQ Center in Oakland.

BERKELEY – California volleyball (7-13, 0-10 Pac-12) closed out their final home weekend in October on Sunday with an early-afternoon matchup against UCLA (10-9, 4-6), hoping to build off of their improved play on Friday with a victory against the Bruins. Ultimately, it was the latter who found themselves in the win column at the end of the day, out-performing the Bears on both offense and defense in a 3-0 sweep.
Although junior Lydia Grote started off the match with two straight kills, the Bruins quickly seized control of the set by posting a pair of scoring runs worth five and four points, respectively, to go up by six. Cal accumulated points at a steady pace throughout the rest of the set, aided by freshman Mikayla Hayden and senior Sydney Lilomaiava, who posted two blocks apiece; however, UCLA kept pace to stay ahead, eventually clinching the first set 25-19.
There's win, tie, lose, and then there's "they closed out the weekend". Cal is 0-10 in Pac-12 play.

Marshawn called out the fans, but you know what, if you consistently put out a crap team what do you expect? I do recall how wild Memorial was for the games when Marshawn was there, but man we are so far from having anything remotely as exciting and fun to watch as that. It just makes me sad and angry to watch Cal games this year!
also, night games blow. and blow hard. I would rather us not put it on TV than have a game that starts after 5PM.

But watching the product on the field is only part of the experience. Other draws include hanging out with friends, enjoying the atmosphere, pre-game tailgating, seeing events like Forsett and Lynch getting inducted into the HoF. If I'm attending games in person I'd rather watch an okay team that sells out every game and has an electric atmosphere than a great team in a 50% full stadium (e.g. the mausoleum across the bay during peak Shaw).
We may not be able to field a good football team, but there are plenty of things that can be done to try to build an enjoyable atmosphere that will put butts in the seats (not that the AD seems to be putting much effort into that, though...).
I don’t disagree, but there is a threshold of non-crappy play the team needs to meet to make the above true, and we are not meeting it

i have had a Sonos Connect for a long time to get some non-wifi stuff hooked up to my sounds system around the house. the Connect is connected to a Peachtree Amp and a nice set of Focal bookshelf speakers in the living room.
just ordered a Port to replace it. also ordered an Amp to drive a pair of wired outdoor speakers.
overall happy w/ Sonos, but not sure what setups other people have.
we also have Playbar and Sub for family room TV

I have 5 Sonos 1's around the house and they're fine but I don't love them. They have more connection and sync issues than I'd like.
we have an older Sonos5 in the kitchen, which is at the point of using a dedicated control app that's not being given new capabilities for some reason? All I remember is that Sonos was simply going to cut support for that generation of speaker and people lost their minds. Otherwise the daughters and I use headphones (AirPods for them, Grado Labs or airpods for me)

Was working on the computer Friday and Saturday nights, and Showtime showed some horror flicks that I watched…I’m not a horror buff by any means…
Friday: Wrong Turn (2021 version) - interesting premise, could have been executed (no pun intended) much better. Gory and violent, but at the end of the day, felt underwhelmed.
Saturday: X (2022) - This one was fascinating, and actually received some critical acclaim following a screening at the South x Southwest Film Festival. Set in rural Texas in 1979, there’s definitely some Texas Chainsaw Massacre-vibes, and it offers an interesting, grainy look into the world of porn as seen in the horror flick. A decent film, with plenty of gore.
These two were definitely NOT good for the whole family, though neither is watching Musgrave’s Cal offense, so I guess there’s that…
I believe they released a prequel to X called Pearl.
I read that - Ti West wrote an origin prequel? I’ll check that out…surprised how much I enjoyed it.
Saw Tar yesterday. Best new release I've seen so far this year. Cate Blanchett is brilliant, one of a handful of actresses who could have carried a film of that magnitude.
