They're making a serious run at Yamamoto...maybe that helps lure Ohtani.

Based on Farhan's history, coupled with the Johnson's desire to spend money on Lauren Boebert's campaign rather than elite bats, both seem unlikely but you never know. I'd be shocked if they got Ohtani, less so with Yamamoto.

Bruce Bochy now has a shot to join Sparky Anderson and Tony LaRussa as the only managers in MLB history to win a World Series with teams in the AL and the NL.

Anderson won the World Series managing the Cincinnati Red (NL) in '75 and '76 and the Detroit Tigers (AL) in '84. In '84, the Tigers won their first 9 games and 35 of their first 40 games. The Tigers won 104 games that season and played the San Diego Padres in the World Series. A back-up catcher on that Padres team was one Bruce Bochy.

Tony LaRussa won the World Series managing the Oakland A's (AL) in '89 and the St. Louis Cardinals in '06 and '11.

The '89 World Series was a 4-game sweep against the Giants.

The '06 Cardinals defeated the Detroit Tigers, 4 games to 1 in the World Series.

The '11 Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers in the '11 World Series, 4 games to 3.

The D is the big issue. In recent weeks, Minnesota's O has been held largely in check by Carolina and Chicago, yet torched the Niners. Did Javon Hargreave even get a mention from Buck? The DL was an utter non-factor. Cousins did arguably have the game of his life, making quick reads and fitting the ball in tight, tight windows. But O'Connell clearly saw something with the Niners D, as he schemed Vikings receivers open all night.

A puzzling effort from the D, when this team absolutely needed the D to win them a tough game on the road. Despite the INT, Moonie Ward killed them, with the flub v Addison at the end of the 1H proving decisive.

Mrs Slug says that Shanahan is "donezo" (pronounced DUN-zo). I have a hard time arguing against that notion since I have observed in the past that Shanahan's apparent ceiling is getting to the Super Bowl, but not winning it.

PREDICTION: if the 49ers win it all this year, Shanahan will be be extended. If not, he's donezo.

Expand full comment

This seems like a wild overreaction to a 5-2 team.

Expand full comment
Oct 24, 2023·edited Oct 24, 2023

Is it, though?

The last two losses are merely more evidence that Shanahan can't win a Super Bowl. Super Bowl teams shouldn't have big letdowns two weeks in a row to sub .500 teams. (CORRECTION: Cleveland was 2-2 before beating the 49ers in Week 6.)

This could be similar to the knock on Steve Young before the 49ers dispatched San Diego in Super Bowl XXIX. Difference being that a 49ers team quarterbacked by Young *did*, in fact, win a Super Bowl.

I'm doubting that a Shanahan coached 49ers squad can win a Super Bowl. This year's team may be the last best chance for a while.

Expand full comment

Here's my further argument, though:

1. The 2019 team was extremely close to winning the Super Bowl. Like, one missed deep throw from Jimmy G close. I don't see how this "proves" Shanahan can't win.

2. The 2021 team wasn't actually that good and it was impressive they even got to the NFC Championship Game. I actually chalk this up as a mark in Shanahan's favor that he got that team through two playoff games.

3. The 2022 team maybe WAS good enough, but all their quarterbacks got hurt in one playoff game. How is that the coach's fault?

Expand full comment
Oct 24, 2023·edited Oct 24, 2023

1. The 49ers lost Super Bowl LIV by 11 points, 2 possessions. That's not "close". What's worse is that the 49ers had a 10 point lead at the end of the 3rd quarter and couldn't hold the lead. They could barely get a few first downs, much less score in the critical 4th quarter when they gave up 21 *unanswered* points. Score a TD and prevent KC from scoring one of their three 4th quarter TDs and the 49ers win Super Bowl LIV. Didn't happen, though.

2. The 2021 team still did not win a Super Bowl. They had a shot at getting to Super Bowl LVI, but their defense dropped the ball (literally) at a critical point in the NFC Championship game.

3. Again, the 2022 49ers didn't win the Super Bowl. They didn't even get to the Super Bowl.

Kyle Shanahan cannot win the biggest game. And he has a track record of losing big leads. See Super Bowl LI and the biggest collapse in Super Bowl history. 31 *unanswered* points. Sound familiar?

There's a simple way to refute the hypothesis: a Kyle Shanahan-coached 49ers team wins a Super Bowl. Any Super Bowl.

On this day in 1970 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Washington State, 45-0. After a scoreless first quarter in which WSU twice entered the Cal red zone without scoring, the Bear offense exploded. A 44 yard TD pass from Dave Penhall to running back Bob Darby provided the second of two second quarter scores. Isaac Curtis had two second half TD runs and Darby added a second score to his ledger. The Bears racked up 23 first downs to 10 for the Cougars. The previous week the Bears had suffered a heart-breaking loss to the Bruins with the winning TD coming with four seconds remaining on a play in which UCLA QB Dennis Dummit had clearly stepped out of bounds but the Bears rebounded from that disappointment for the blow out win.
