It was a bitch and after much pressure from parents, they changed it about 10 years after I graduated so as to stop disadvantaging their students when applying to college.

it leads to a decimal grade point average, and if you count 1.05x for honors and 1.1x for AP classes class ranks become strange competitive and complicated.

Saw the new Dave Chappelle special on Netflix, very funny although obviously (intentionally) offensive in almost every conceivable way. He is really on top of his game - jokes evolving through the set, weaving together, setting up absurd impersonations and scenarios for him to mine.. he is on top of his game.
He does spend nearly the entire second half of it on the transgender stuff that has gotten him in hot water, and that part is not as funny as the first half. He deliberately misunderstands what progressive folks mean by the word “gender” which is one of the main things that has gotten him in trouble with the Twitter inquisitor crowd. (He misunderstands it to refer simply to genetic/biological matters). But I think the social justice types on social media are misunderstanding him on purpose as well. First, on a small level, they are clearly talking past each other re gender, using the word to mean different things. But bigger picture, I think the SJ crowd is deliberately missing that his act is a work of art. I understand it is part of the social narrative, and there are concerns about norm setting through speech like this, but it still needs to be understood and permitted as both art and speech. Obviously, were he proposing legislation in Congress, thought would be entirely different.

It's funny that two old warhorses of Sci-fi are out now: Foundation & Dune. I'm enjoying Foundation on Apple+, as I'm watching it, I'm remembering more of the book read once decades ago. It wasn't a book that really screamed "made a movie" - unlike Dune, which really did.
The first time I read Dune (early 20's) I thought it was great; re-read maybe 5 years later, thought it was trash, entertaining trash, but not really any good.
There are some things in the 84 version that were not in the 2021 version and for me it explained some plot holes in the newer version. And the casting is all over the map; Dean Stockwell, Max Von Sydow, Sean Young, Sting, Patrick Stewart, Brad Dourif.
Feyd Harkkonsen will be in Dune Part 2. They really minimized the role and plot of Dr. Yeuh - the funny part is when he speaks to Paul in Sek language, it's just mandarin, so our theater just cracked up when Timothee spoke his one line of Mandarin. (it wasn't that bad to be honest)
Sound levels are a complaint I have not just about movies, but TV broadcasts in general. I'm looking forward to getting bluetooth hearing aids. We have one TV with bluetooth capabilities and it will allow me to hear clearly without blasting out others.

And the day got weirder from here. Harvard & Princeton tied 16-16 going into 3OT. Princeton did not convert in their 3OT attempt, and then Harvard did, seemingly winning the game. However, Princeton HC Bob Surace had been attempting to call a timeout, and simply wasn't heard by the referees. No whistle was blown or flags were thrown, and the play proceeded as a successful conversion, but referees ruled that since Princeton had intended to call a timeout they could have one and the conversion would be replayed.
Princeton eventually pulled out a win in 5OT. However because a timeout can only be granted before the snap, the conversion should have stood, giving Harvard an 18-16 3OT win. The official result won't change and stands as an 18-16 5OT win for Princeton, but an absolutely wild finish to a crazy game.

The @ ARI play calling was coaching malpractice...it almost looked like Shanahan was purposely calling plays to put his rookie QB in the most difficult spots imaginable, just so he could say to the front office "see, he's not ready, let's play Jimmy." Even with that brutal play calling, Trey showed glimpses of immense potential, and if Shanahan didn't eschew FGs to go for it on 4th down on pretty much every drive in Cardinal territory, Niners win that game at Glendale.
Truth is, neither Shanahan has ever developed a QB in their lives, and the egotistical, tough love, know-it all attitude that Kyle employs is the main reason why he is not going to be HC long enough to be able to do so with Lance. On my run yesterday I saw two women wearing Cal gear - one a sweatshirt and the other a ball cap. Then in the afternoon I went for a walk wearing a Cal t-shirt. My nephew was able to see tardigrades through his microscope. He picked up a droplet of water that had formed on some lichen growing on the back deck. Pretty cool, especially after Neil deGrasse Tyson made tardigrades famous in Cosmos, the science miniseries from a few years back.
Since you've seen tardigrades in a microscope, you might have a thought about this. Most pictures of water bears in movies and things (like the picture above) are modelled after SEM scans, and they look a little cute. In an optical microscope, you can see through them, and there is less cuteness.

It's been a long time since I watched it, but I remember finding it incomprehensible. The newer movie is pretty easy to understand from the jump.

all I can tell you is that the answer is "not Urban Meyer or James Franklin." After that, I don't have a sense that there's an obvious candidate who has both succeeded somewhere else and seems like a good choice for an upgrade job (like the coaches at Cincinnati and Iowa State) who also wants to move to California (unlike the coaches at Cincinnati and Iowa State). As long as whoever it is hires a decent recruiter and does something about line play, I'm sure it'll be fine.

I know the Penn State QB was hurt last weekend. Is he still hurt? No 1 is going to be in Columbus for a wedding next Sun and Penn State is playing OSU there. He was thinking it would be cool to go to the game but the cheapest ticket was like 200. Plus, it's a 730 game and that just wouldn't work with the rehearsal dinner.

And the day got weirder from here. Harvard & Princeton tied 16-16 going into 3OT. Princeton did not convert in their 3OT attempt, and then Harvard did, seemingly winning the game. However, Princeton HC Bob Surace had been attempting to call a timeout, and simply wasn't heard by the referees. No whistle was blown or flags were thrown, and the play proceeded as a successful conversion, but referees ruled that since Princeton had intended to call a timeout they could have one and the conversion would be replayed.
Princeton eventually pulled out a win in 5OT. However because a timeout can only be granted before the snap, the conversion should have stood, giving Harvard an 18-16 3OT win. The official result won't change and stands as an 18-16 5OT win for Princeton, but an absolutely wild finish to a crazy game.

The @ ARI play calling was coaching malpractice...it almost looked like Shanahan was purposely calling plays to put his rookie QB in the most difficult spots imaginable, just so he could say to the front office "see, he's not ready, let's play Jimmy." Even with that brutal play calling, Trey showed glimpses of immense potential, and if Shanahan didn't eschew FGs to go for it on 4th down on pretty much every drive in Cardinal territory, Niners win that game at Glendale.
Truth is, neither Shanahan has ever developed a QB in their lives, and the egotistical, tough love, know-it all attitude that Kyle employs is the main reason why he is not going to be HC long enough to be able to do so with Lance. But Lance sitting 2-3 years does nobody any good. He needs reps....IMO, which is worth nothing, of course.
I mean, theoretically the roster is a decent contender if healthy . . . but it's never healthy. And at this point you can't expect it to be, when the same guys keep getting hurt.

Roberts could wear out any pitching staff. The Dodgers thought they had assembled enough talent to overcome even Roberts-level tinkering, and for most of the season, it appeared they had. Yeah I'm sure losing 3 starting pitchers during the season (fuck Bauer) had nothing to do with it. Losing Kershaw hurt the most because it was so late in the season. And I think Scherzer started to have dead arm the last few starts before the playoffs even started.

Saturday's game was a perfect encapsulation of why I hate Wilcox brand football. Build a nice lead in the first half, then shut it all down and play to not fuck up in the second half, points be damned.

I agree with you on the offensive PI, that was silly. His arm made the motion of pushing off, but in no way did it look like there was any actual pushing in that motion. Regarding Dancy, I have a hard time believing you’d maintain that position if the same play happened to one of Cal’s opponents. The video was pretty clear that a non-hand or foot part of his body touched the turf, so by rule, he’s down (according to Fiat’s clarification). Too bad he has such jacked calves I guess.

On my run yesterday I saw two women wearing Cal gear - one a sweatshirt and the other a ball cap. Then in the afternoon I went for a walk wearing a Cal t-shirt. Saw another guy out running with a Cal shirt and he yelled out Go Bears. I returned the greeting and he hollered out Class of 90 as he ran by. All it took was a win and we're all over the place.

My nephew was able to see tardigrades through his microscope. He picked up a droplet of water that had formed on some lichen growing on the back deck. Pretty cool, especially after Neil deGrasse Tyson made tardigrades famous in Cosmos, the science miniseries from a few years back.
Since you've seen tardigrades in a microscope, you might have a thought about this. Most pictures of water bears in movies and things (like the picture above) are modelled after SEM scans, and they look a little cute. In an optical microscope, you can see through them, and there is less cuteness.
