FSU: that tomahawk chop is going to get very old, very quickly. It will be like listening to the USC band play same the garbage over and over, but with an added dash of racism
I have a long-standing hate thing with that chant. I remember it from when my sons were in Little League. As an umpire I did everything I could do to discourage it whenever I umpired a game with the Braves.
NC State is the Billy Baldwin of the North Carolina ACC schools. He's the third best known out of the three and isn't as successful as UNC and Duke. NC State is a weird combination of engineers (UNC doesn't have an engineering school apart from CS and Environmental) and rednecks. Wake Forest is Danny Baldwin because you totally forget that there are actually four Baldwin Brothers.
Duke is viewed by other ACC schools a bit like SC is viewed by Pac12 schools but for basketball - although one difference is that Duke is actually consistently good at basketball unlike SC & football. Plus they somehow keep producing all sorts of reactionaries and neo-fascists like Stephen Miller, who palled around with Richard Spencer when they were both students there.
HAG and i have a HS friend who teaches at Auburn too. and that person was super good good friends w/ each of our respective sisters that are all 2 yrs younger.
SMU for sure since I have close friends who live close to the stadium and 1 of whom is an alum with Tailgate hookup action. 3 hour drive to get there for me.
Auburn has been planned for years.
I want to go to FSU or Pitt but that will depend on how many of our travel crew want an extra game on the east coast. Won't be able to convince the missus otherwise haha. Pittsburgh is a phenomenal city and I'd like to experience an FSU game at least once. So we'll see
Yeah, it’s a fun time. SMU will get better and the quality of the teams that they play are going improve. Although I am unhappy about the demise of PAC-12, I smile knowing that Cal will play in Dallas every other year and that the experience will be a good one. And, because the SMU alumni are so tired of being outcasts, they will throw a lot of money at further improving the experience- which includes big NIL dollars to pay players
I can’t “hate” SMU like I do/did USC, so the venom of the game will not be the same. But, maybe it turns into a mini-rivalry. Something to look forward to.
I will go to SMU games just to root against Stanford. I will enjoy that too.
Maybe Cal will get to play SMU at the Cotton Bowl during the state fair just like Texas and OU do. That is a fantastic experience. All the Cal fans would like that.
I'll probably sit out this year's slate of games. Traveling with two kids under 4 wouldn't be worth it for those opponents. That said, depending on the Pitt game's kickoff time, it may be feasible to go solo by flying in, going to the game, and flying out that night.
I'm not sure if this is possible from where you are in northern MD, but it's a manageable 4 hour drive to Accrisure Stadium from MoCo. (I say this having done day trips to Charlottesville and MetLife Stadium for games, so I realize it may not be appealing to other folks)
Probably Auburn, Wake Forest, and perhaps one more (Pitt or FSU). I am not looking forward to Wake Forest because Winston-Salem isn't a nice town, but it's less than an hour and a half drive, so I'm going.
"(L)et the people make their own mistakes" sounds not far removed from "If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population."
CARMEL – Sophomores Nathan Wang and Daniel Heo shot 3-under-par 69s to lead the California men's golf team in the first round of the Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve Golf Club on Monday. The Golden Bears collectively shot a 2-over 290 and sit in sole possession of 11th place after 18 holes of play.
The start of the first round was pushed back an hour due to a frost delay, resulting in second-round play being suspended at 6 p.m. PT. The second round will be picked up Tuesday morning, followed by the third and final round of the event.
BERKELEY – This week the California women's tennis team will send four Golden Bears to the ITA National Fall Championships in San Diego and send five Bears to the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Arizona, as the fall half of the 2023-24 season comes to a close.
California's Maggie Li was named the Pac-12 Volleyball Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season after helping the Golden Bears to their first sweep of a Pac-12 team since 2019 and leading the team in kills in both matches played.
Li's five weekly honors are tied for the third-most in conference history. She notched 10 kills in the Bears' sweep of Arizona on Sunday and tallied 17 total kills along with eight digs across the two contests.
BERKELEY – California's 2023 regular-season home finale against Washington State on Nov. 11 will kick off from California Memorial Stadium at 1 p.m. PT and be televised by ESPN2. The contest is also the Golden Bears' last Pac-12 Conference home game before joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2024.
BERKELEY – The California field hockey team swept the America East Conference's weekly awards Monday with Bente Baekers being named Player of the Week and goalkeeper Tina Jolly taking home her second Defensive Player of the Week award.
Baekers, a graduate transfer from Northwestern, led the Golden Bears to a 2-0 weekend with road wins over New Hampshire and Maine to secure the No. 4 seed in this week's America East Conference Tournament. Baekers finished with seven points on three goals and an assist and had 11 shots with seven on goal for a .636 shots-on-goal percentage across the two games.
On this day in 1981 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Oregon State, 45-3. It was the second of only two wins that year for Cal and the only one at home. Head coach Roger Theder was dismissed at season’s end. The Bears piled up 568 yards of total offense and a school-record 35 first downs in their first game after abandoning offensive coordinator Mouse Davis and his run-and-shoot offense. Quarterback J Torchio led the attack connecting on 17 of 23 passes for 234 yards. But running back Carl Montgomery was the day’s real hero rushing for 113 yards and four touchdowns. Mariet Ford led Bear receivers with eight catches for 105 yards. He would later gain fame for tossing the last of five laterals in The Play. He is currently serving a sentence of 45 years to life for the murder of his pregnant wife in 1997.
DBD celebrates 100 years of football in Strawberry Canyon with this daily feature appearing throughout the football season.
They did. Their only win was against Fresno State, who had Jeff Tedford at QB. That year, the average team scored 20.5 points in a game. Stanford put up 63 points against them, Washington and USC both hung 56 on them, and five other team scored over 40 points on them including Cal.
Not only did OSU beat Fresno State in 1981, they came back from a 28-point deficit to accomplish the feat, 31-28.
EDIT: OSU was so woeful in 1981, their only win was against Fresno State. The Beavs were outscored 145-469 that season.
From 1975 to 1996, Oregon State had many seasons in which their win total was no more than 2 wins. The breakdown over those 22 seasons looks like this -
1975 was the last season of Dee Andros' 11 year reign in Corvallis and the season with the smallest win total (1). 1976 though 1996 covered the tenures of Craig Fertig, Joe Avezzano, Dave Kragthorpe, and Jerry Pettibone. OSU was a cumulative 45-193-6, 0.197 winning percentage over that period.
As bad as Cal has had it, OSU has endured worse for longer. It's all relative.
The Golden State Warriors dismantled the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night, leaving the Smoothie King Center with a 130-102 victory. It was the Dubs third consecutive win, all of which have come on the road, and it secured a clean sweep on the team’s first back-to-back of the schedule, after a Sunday night win over the Houston Rockets. It’s way too early to make any proclamations, but this Warriors team looks markedly different from last season’s team. Part of it is the cohesive depth. Part of it is the early success on the road. But the biggest piece remains Steph Curry’s transcendent abilities.

Give the DBD a reason to start hating FSU, Pitt, SMU, Wake Forest, Duke, Miami, NC State, and/or Syracuse.
SMU: George W. Bush loves them.
Duke is the Stanford of the ACC.
FSU: that tomahawk chop is going to get very old, very quickly. It will be like listening to the USC band play same the garbage over and over, but with an added dash of racism
No better than the when the Braves fans do it. Yes, FSU will replace Oregon for fan obnoxiousness from a public university.
Yeah, the Tomahawk Chop remains the most annoying collective fan thing in sports. Not only because of the racial implications; it's just so incessant.
I have a long-standing hate thing with that chant. I remember it from when my sons were in Little League. As an umpire I did everything I could do to discourage it whenever I umpired a game with the Braves.
Yes, Yes, Yes, and sorry, but fuck those fans.
I'm going to have a hard time finding any animosity for NC State since they were the swing vote for our admission into the ACC
Duke is viewed by other ACC schools a bit like SC is viewed by Pac12 schools but for basketball - although one difference is that Duke is actually consistently good at basketball unlike SC & football. Which roadies would you BE LIKELY to attend in 2024? Choices: Auburn, FSU, Pitt, SMU, Wake Forest
Auburn and whichever is the first ACC matchup
Definitely Auburn. Not sure about the rest yet. It may depend on the yet to be announced ACC BB schedule.
Auburn has been on the calendar for years no? i just assumed that is there DBD tailgaters are going next.
i think it would be fun to see a game at FSU since "good college football atmosphere and tradition" is one of the compelling factors.
Newellbany, Jockface and I are already in for Auburn.
Not sure if I have another ACC trip in me.
Are you sure Newellbany isn't going to bail? Again?
I'm already in negotiations with Dr. Mrs. Newellbany to get him the weekend. She drives a tough bargain...I may have to give up draft picks.
If you were the 9ers you wouldn't have any left to give.
OOoooOOOOooo - nice, but I don't think it'd really be like that.
I'd be scared!

SMU tailgating not half bad. Kinda like a mini, mini version of The Grove.
so I have been told. My friends are season ticket holders and frequently just stay at the tailgate
Yeah, it’s a fun time. SMU will get better and the quality of the teams that they play are going improve. Although I am unhappy about the demise of PAC-12, I smile knowing that Cal will play in Dallas every other year and that the experience will be a good one. Auburn, and it's not close.
I'll probably sit out this year's slate of games. Traveling with two kids under 4 wouldn't be worth it for those opponents. That said, depending on the Pitt game's kickoff time, it may be feasible to go solo by flying in, going to the game, and flying out that night.

I'd like to attend Auburn. No interest in visiting any of the other campuses.
