In case you're wondering what the above Finnish phrases mean in English, they are:

"I don't know"

"sauna"

"I don't speak Finnish"

"Don't stand so close to me"

"Punch Twist"

It's been a while so my grammar is rusty, but the last one sounds off. I believe you'd have to make Twist's name in the partitive case here, "Lyö Twistia naaman" (Punch Twist's face). Admittedly though, "En mä tie" was my favorite expression in Finland, so take that with a grain of salt.

Maybe you also didn't know that Berkeley had a somewhat sizable Finnish community that was established early in the 20th century. As I understand it, the Mork family (metal fabricators) have Finnish origins. Mork is still in Weest Berkeley on 6th Street. One of my favorites is an oil painting of a Chinese man smoking a jade pipe that I inherited from my grandparents. I have a memory of them telling me that they had picked up this painting on their one trip to China decades back, so in addition to it being a very nice looking picture I always thought of as a neat piece of family history that I'd like to keep/display. So in that way it gives me fond memories of my now passed grandparents. It also reminds me of the decline of my grandmother's mental faculties because not long after she had said I could have the painting as she was going into assisted living she told my mom that she was upset that "I had stole" the painting from her house.

Also just this year when my mom was visiting I was talking about how it was hard to find info on the artist (T.S. Wong) and believed it was due to them getting the painting on their trip to China. She quickly told me that she doesn't remember them bringing home any artwork from their brief trip and that it was probably just picked up from some garage sale when they lived in Oakland. So now the painting also makes me laugh.

Heh, I loved Chinese art when I was 17-18 on a base in Alabama, spent hours out in the country learning to paint in a Chinese way with ink only on rice paper. Lots of work - ended with a final painting inspired by 16th Cent Chinese painting.

Professionally framed, hanging in the Dining room, quite good looking.

I have a tiny picture of flower - postcard sized. It's beautiful, but it's nothing special art wise. But it was a little added bonus piece that an artist threw in when we bought one of his paintings in Provincetown. Provincetown has a special place in my heart because it was the place where we took our child to demonstrate that being gay is not only okay, it's fun, proud, vibrant, and brave. My kid's confidence went up a notch. For me, that little picture represents my unconditional love for my child.

In my state (NC), DEMs barely (51%/49%) carried the new district (NC-13) thanks to the latest census and barely kept NC-1 (52%/48%). This prevented a super-majority that would overturn the Governor's veto. But it only delayed the inevitable. Appeals courts overturned anti-gerrymandering, which 2024 will almost certainly see a sweep by the GOP of State congress, Governor, US Senate, and US House as popular Governor Roy Cooper is term-limited. As a result, abortion will almost certainly be banned in 2024.

Every election the old people die and new young people get to vote, and that is making a significant change in the electorate. Let's hope they can save NC before this all happens.

Expand full comment
sycasey's avatar

That's also one of my takeaways from this midterm: the GOP has been performing HORRIBLY with Millennial and Gen-Z voters, and we are now moving into a time where they will be the numerical majority. Eventually this was going to catch up to them.

EDIT: And if anyone wonders if Boomers and Gen-X were the same at like age, no, not really. The two parties were both able to split those generations more evenly, even in their youth. Since Obama's first election, the under-30 vote has MASSIVELY favored Democrats.

Expand full comment
SGBear's avatar

US Senate (GA): Warnock (49.4%) and Walker (48.5%) go to a run-off as no candidate got 50%. Libertarian candidate siphoned off 2.1% of the vote. Warnock is slightly favored in a run-off because Walker won't have the benefit of Kemp carrying him. Thus, there is a decent chance that DEMs will pick up a seat 51-49, which reduces - but does not eliminate the blackmail leverage that Sinema & Manchin have.

[MBB] Golden Bears Add Two Signees In 2023 Class

https://calbears.com/news/2022/11/9/mens-basketball-golden-bears-add-two-signees-in-2023-class.aspx

BERKELEY – California men's basketball head coach Mark Fox announced Wednesday that prep standouts Rodney Brown and Devin Curtis have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Golden Bears next season. The duo will join Cal ahead of the 2023-24 campaign.

Brown is a 6-foot-6 combo guard from Perris, Calif. As a junior at Rancho Christian School (Temecula, Calif.) in 2021-22, Brown averaged 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 2.3 steals per game. He additionally averaged 12.3 PPG for the Eagles as a sophomore.

Cal football trivia fun fact. Sponsored by the British East India Company.

In Pappy Waldorf’s first six years at Cal (1947-1952), the Bears went 53-6-1 in regular season play boasting winning records over every opponent except U$C against whom they were 3-3.

Cal trivia fun fact appears on DBD every Tuesday and Thursday during the football season.

As a special bonus to DBD readers, Cal football trivia fun fact will appear daily during Big Game week.
