CAL

On this day in 1947 in Memorial Stadium the Golden Bears defeated Montana, 60-14. The following weekend Cal would win it’s first Big Game since 1941 to finish Pappy Waldorf’s first season at 9-1. The Bears averaged 8.3 yards per play despite wet, foggy conditions that included a half time drizzle. California led 43-7 at the half and 53-7 entering the final quarter. The Bears used 43 different players, a large number in those days. Most of the damage was done on the ground with only two pass completions in five attempts for 99 aerial yards. The 60 points were the most for California since a 60-13 win in 1928 and it gave the Sturdy Golden Ones 254 points after nine games, the most in a season since 1922. Among the many Bears to gain yardage on the ground was George Fong one of two Chinese-Americans to play for Cal in the first half of the 20th century. After the game star running back Jackie Jensen expressed regret that the Bears ran up the score against the Grizzlies. “Honestly we are. We’re glad everybody on the squad got a chance to play. We’re going to try again next week and we don’t care where the score goes,” he said in reference to the Big Game. Little did he know that a woeful Indian team would play the Bears to the wire and Jensen’s late heroics would be needed for the victory.

Go Bears!

I went for a walk yesterday afternoon and for the first time I can recall someone else initiated a Go Bears. I was wearing a Cal cap and was watching some turkeys working their way to where they roost at night. A guy and a girl came up on a run. He was wearing an A's t-shirt and noticed my cap and gave me a Go Bears. I returned it and included a go A's. We chatted a bit and it turns out he's from Fairfield and copped to really being more of a Giants fan. His dad went to Cal.

If the Bears win on Saturday it will mark the first time that they've won three consecutive Big Games on the Farm since '47, '49 and '51. It will also give Wilcox a winning record against Furd (4-3) something only the following other Cal coaches (since the permanent move to football in 1915) can boast: Smith, Allison, Waldorf, Elliot, Kapp and Tedford. (Gilbertson and Theder were both .500 against the Lobsterbacks.)

Expand full comment

A win this Saturday on The Farm would also be three straight wins against Stanf*rd, a feat that has not been accomplished since the 2002 through 2006 teams defeated Stanf*rd 5 straight times.

Before 2002-2006, the previous winning streaks of at least 3 games against Stanf*rd have been in these years -

1919-1923 (5 straight; Andy Smith)

1936-1939 (4 straight; Stub Allison)

1947-1949 (Pappy Waldorf)

1958-1960 (2 wins under Pete Elliott, 1 win under Marv Levy)

If you allow for ties, the undefeated streaks would add or extend these periods -

1901-1903 (Frank Simpson, 1-0-0; James Whipple, 1-0-1)

1919-1924 (Andy Smith, 5-0-1)

1947-1954 (Pappy Waldorf, 6-0-2)

NOTABLE: Bruce Snyder was winless (0-4-1) vs. Stanf*rd. The 1991 Big Game still hurts.

Other winless Cal head coaches in Big Game history -

Nibs Price (0-4-1), 1926-1930

Frank Wickhorst (0-1), 1946

Steve Mariucci (0-1), 1996

Tom Holmoe (0-5), 1997-2001

Sonny Dykes (0-4), 2013-2016

I won't list the records of coaches before Andy Smith (pre-1916) because there are at least 13 head coaches whose stints were short - 1 or 2 years.

Notable from that period, though is Garrett Cochran, whose 1898 and 1899 teams were 2-0 against the Lobsterbacks. "Hit 'em again, boys! Harder! Harder!"

Flood made that horrible roughing the passer call in the 1990 Big Game. I'm not sure if Flood headed up the officiating crew for the 1991 Big Game. In the 1991 Big Game, Cal was called for 15 unsportsmanlike penalties. Fifteen. 225 yards.

Oh right, that was 90 at home. 91 at Furd was horrendous. I remember quite a few of them were on the sidelines after the Furd ball carrier went into the Cal sidelines.

Yup. my recollection, too. I always wondered if Denny Green lodged an inquiry or a complaint with the head of Pac-12 officiating.

Sen. Mullin (R-OK) and the Teamsters have some bad blood going back years. There was a testy exchanges at the Senate Help Committee hearing between the Teamster leader and the Senator. House passes stop gap Federal government funding bill 336-95. I have not read too much about the Bill apart from that it lacks a bunch of the MAGA rubbish. It will now go to the Senate, where it is expected to pass. But then everyone will watch to see if the so-called House Freedom Caucus ousts Speaker Johnson.

I doubt that they will. The bottom line is that Johnson is doing the HFC a huge favor by giving them the veneer of actually governing, contrary to their nihilist tendencies and intent. This is far more evil in the long run as the appearance of ability to govern holds off or blunts potential voter revolt against HFC candidates. In other words, it helps these nihilists get re-elected.

After reading the article, I'm prepared to discount it. (1) the source of the report is BRO, which gives me pause, (2) it's conditional on UCLA losing to USC, (3) it hints that even if UCLA beats USC on 11/18, Kelly will be fired after the Cal game on 11/25 regardless of the outcome of that game.

Not sure I buy any of that. It just strikes me as looking for a reason to stir shit up.

Working in forestry I saw quite a few. Quite a few on Olympic Peninsula while contracted to the Quinault Tribe....and once in a while on the Mt. Hood NF and the Gifford Pinchot. By far the most in terms of frequency was on Prince of Wales Island in SE AK....too many to count and once a

persistent "aggressive" one following me and chomping its jaws....but on POW there were only Black Bears, so one was on top of the food chain vs. quite a bit of the rest of SE AK where fire arms, rifle or slug 12 gauge were required with certification. I worked with quite a few folks who transferred to POW due to close calls with Brown Bears (two snap shot killings at close range).

Living in Ketchikan, on Deermount St., right in town, my porch on the second level of a duplex was visited a few times. Once whilst watching football on a late Sat. afternoon a bear appeared at the sliding glass door and gave me a jolt. My siamese cat was indoor/outdoor and if he was staying under the bed for long periods, bears were around....scent no doubt.
