DBD Not Intended For Trading Purposes and Advice

Expand full comment

Seeing if a new subtopic can be started here, mostly because I'm really interested in everyone's thoughts on finances in general.

I'm really starting to think about putting the portion of my savings that I'm accumulating to eventually purchase real estate (currently in high yield online savings accounts) into REIT funds. Good/bad idea?

Expand full comment
author

I'm interested in the topic, although my financial thoughts are mostly "I'm not smart enough/spending enough time on this to invest well, so I'm paying a professional to do it for me".

Expand full comment

REITs are its own thing - they're part bond and party equity. Sure you're getting enhanced yields, but you're also buying equity market risk.

Expand full comment

we have a couple at part of our larger investment portfolio. not too much interest in owning rental property despite the better overall returns. trying to keep it as low hassle as possible.

Expand full comment

I've got a relatively long horizon for this, though - > 10 years.

First house?

No, but wife and I want to start looking into second without moving from or selling current home.

Expand full comment

I'd either buy a lower cost unit to act as an investment property or invest in a better returning asset since 10 years is a moderate term (S&P 500 low load ETF). You're not going to catch the "property inflation" trend very well through REITs.

Expand full comment

REIT? No, bad idea.

Expand full comment

Why's that?

Expand full comment

I know this by association, a RE competitor embraced them as a way of financing new construction. The return on REITs is vastly lower than LLC's, which made him very happy (and rich).

TL;DR: Weenies probably getting back their starting QB Tanner McKee, TE, ILB, CB. Also get back one of their 3rd string platoon RBs

Weenies will be missing RG, hybrid ILB, QB Jack West and QB Ari Patu.

Expand full comment

So if we can get to McKee they will be in a world of hurt...

Expand full comment

I'm a little surprised they didn't let him finish out the year, but the writing was on the wall.

Expand full comment

Someone brought up a good point about the early signing period being a reason that programs are firing coaches during the season. Not sure if that is a legitimate reason or just an excuse.

Expand full comment

its valid cause if you wait, a new coach has an entire class of kids who arrive that he didn't recruit. We were talking Texas and Sark yesterday, he currently has 1 player on the roster...Xavier Worthy, whom he recruited. Worthy has a 49-831-11 stat line through 10 games with those TDs tied for first in the nation and he leads every Frosh stat line for WRs. So it is definitely valid to shitcan guys midseason with that in mind

Expand full comment

So is Sark fired yet? Just joking but I agree that it is a valid reason to fire your coach early, especially if you’re a fringe bowl team.

Expand full comment

The BMDs love that dude so he is fine for another year or possibly 2. The rank and file fanbase is pissed big time but the money loves him. Calm and professional is going over really well after the Tom Herman shitshow the past few years. And Sark has apparently been selling the "this roster is crap and needs a makeover" message since the day he set foot on campus. One of the assistants that came with him from Bama allegedly stated that Bama's 2nd string would beat Texas by 40. This was said after 1 day of Spring practice haha

ICYMI: Cal Poly won its first game in over a year. I don't wish them ill, but Beau Baldwin's rushing offense has been almost non-existent and Spencer Brasch's passing has been "meh" (56.7% completion, 7.0 YPA, 9 TD, 6 INT, 76 yards rush). His defense is awful - 116th out of 123.

Auburn's Bo Nix out for season after opting for surgery. He is a junior, but has two years of eligibility left because of 2020 extra year. Next year is his senior season and then he'll need to decide if he stays the final year of eligibility as a 5th year - when Cal plays against him. He is a late round prospect for 2022 - so I'd say there's a decent chance we see him in 2023.

Will they break the bank for relevance & make a play for Cristobal? Doubt he leaves Oregon, but mmmmm....

Expand full comment

Cristobal might leave Oregon for Miami. East Coast bias might come into play here. That is, Miami might be attractive in a way that Oregon can't be due to Miami's exposure as an ACC team.

Don't count it out is all I'm saying.

Expand full comment

Despite Miami's legacy, I think Oregon has the greater potential of being a consistent power with all of the Nike money and now that they have developed such a foothold over west coast recruiting.

Expand full comment

That's good within the West Coast. It doesn't overwhelm, however, the power of non-Pac12 P5 conferences to recruit from within California or even dilute their TV exposure both in the Central and Eastern Time Zones as well as the Pacific Time Zone.

The Pac-12 has the greater challenge of being in a later time zone. When Pacific Time games should be played is dominated by games from the SEC, ACC, Big Ten, and Big XII. There's gobs of unused bandwidth on NBC and CBS, but the Pac-12 hasn't touched it yet.

Expand full comment

I don’t see it. The ACC is about on the level of the Pac 12 they just got lucky that Clemson hit a peak. No one was talking about the ACC from 03–08 when their teams were down and USC/Pac10/12 had greater exposure.

Expand full comment

Can't really argue with that, especially as a P12 guy, though Miami and Florida St were probably in the national discussion far more recently than most schools in the Pacific time zone, at least on the East Coast....and it's an East Coast sports world...

Expand full comment

I disagree. The Pac-12 is on the verge of irrelevance because Larry Scott has underexposed the conference and the options for greater exposure are not good in the current universe.

What the Pac-12 needs to do (but probably won't) is seek a partnership with a TV network outside of the ESPN/Fox duopoly. Like NBC or CBS. Or both. Relying on ESPN and Fox is asking to always be the league that fills out their late afternoon/after dark programming.

Expand full comment

Question....IF Cristobal DOES bolt for the Miami job, what are the chances Wilcox gets some play for the Oregon gig? (which he would absolutely take in a heartbeat).

As with Washington, I don't see JW having a clear and impressive enough vision for the offensive side of the ball to actually get either gig. The Ducks and Huskies aren't going to be nearly as keen on a conservatively vanilla game plan as Cal, which doesn't seem to even recognize the sport of football.

Expand full comment

I agree they Larry Scott did a lot to make the Pac 12 irrelevant but also how relevant has the ACC been this season with Clemson being down? I haven’t heard much about the ACC this season, outside of the feel good story of Wake Forest but they aren’t a serious contender.

I agree with the Pac 12 needing to reach a new media deal and partnership with NBC, CBS or a streaming service like Amazon Prime or even NBCs Peacock streaming service.

Expand full comment

I doubt he leaves Oregon for Miami. Oregon has much better facilities, stadium, resources, fan and alumni base than Miami.

Expand full comment

All are completely true...everyone loves their Uncle Phil up there...on a sorta unrelated front, I'm glad we finally dumped Nike as our provider - at least the Athletic Department is no longer funding a conference rival.

But Mario is from Miami, FL...played at Miami, FL...and coached at Miami, FL....plus they're desperate for relevance. IF there was ever a time to jump, now is it....I wouldn't be shocked to see it, especially if the P12 somehow gets focked in the CFP playoff.

Expand full comment

Well if the Pac 12 gets fucked, Oregon and Mario will have no one to blame but themselves as that means Oregon will have lost a 2nd game.

I believe that so long as Oregon wins out they will get the 3 or 4 seed.

Expand full comment

100% agree - if Ducks lose a 2nd time, they don't belong....and if they win out, they're in.

The 2004 movie "The Alamo" was a standard piece of patriotic fluff. The final battle scene includes the Mexican army sending forth a platoon of burly mustachioed men with axes to break down the barricades. They had their own specialized uniforms to break down barricades. I remembered watching that and thinking "BS. No way a 19th century army would have specialized axe men." Perhaps the director was influenced by the Lord of the Rings, which was only 3 years earlier.

[ESPN's Passan] Syndergaard to Angels

https://twitter.com/JeffPassan/status/1460626257373286402

Expand full comment

Stupid play, tho Arte doesn't really worry about the money. Even healthy, Syndergaard is far from dominant, save 1 start a year out of 20 where he spins a 2-hit shutout...he just gives up too many long balls, too many walks, and too high a pitch count. But hey, if Heaney just got that deal from LA, and Kris Bryant heading for $30M per, it's overspending season in MLB.

Expand full comment

Always tough to say how guys recover from TJ, but their rotation was so awful it is an upgrade for sure. Agree he’s not an ace, but come on, one year deal for him seems fine considering the meatballs they are tossing out there

Expand full comment

Fair, the money might as well be Monopoly...but Syndergaard is the perfect pitcher for analytics...a parade of 5+ inefficient innings, so you better have a good bullpen...that's right, I said bullpen, PETA be damned.

Expand full comment

Another talent going to waste on Arte's dime

Expand full comment

I would debate just out big of a talent he actually is....for having such good stuff, he is remarkably beatable.

That's a lot of money for a guy that can't handle a full load...he followed up both seasons of 30+ starts in his career with major injuries....no thank you.
