DBD news and notes week of 12/04.

Don't forget the annual DBD Holiday party Saturday (12/9) at the Hyatt Ballroom in SF. Featured entertainers include Paul McCartney, Beyonce, Taylor Swift and our headliners: the University of California Straw Hat Band.

The gift shop now has DBD sweatshirts in all men's women's and children's sizes. Stop by for all your holiday shopping needs.

This week the cafeteria is offering the soup of the day for ten per cent off. Word is that today's corn chowder is delicious.

The DBD ice hockey team continued its winning ways over the weekend. They're in action at Oski Arena tomorrow night. Come cheer the lads on!

It's not too late to sign up for DBD's Secret Santa program but hurry because the deadline is tomorrow at noon. See Psychotic Oski for details.

Wednesday's knitting club meeting will be held in room 203 of the main building. A permanent home will be announced next week.

Have a great week everybody!

it was one of those where you pick outright winners and rank based on confidence.

my complaint is that everyone picks the winners based on some internal strategy. ours just happened to be particularly non-emotional. that being said, if no one else had any chance of winning, there would be no "fun" in playing anymore against the bots.

Normaly the bluetooth SIG provides large catered lunches for each of the events. Since not many companies wanted to go to Sydney to test, they moved the testing part to Paris into a Regus conference room. Since it's a small event, Regus has a place that can bring in boxed lunches so I chose 5 different ones. Of course once they delivered the lunches for today, we found out there isn't a microwave in this facility. so we went down the street and bought a small one for 60 euros, set it up, and warmed our food. Then someone that works here saw that we had one and said they weren't allowed to have microwaves for whatever reason and asked us to just hide it.

Going to have better food for dinner. Steak and frites at Le Relais de l'Entrecôte, Raclette at Le Chalet Savoyard, and middle eastern at L'As du Fallafel. One of the participants said we should also go to Chez Marianne around the corner from L'As du Fallafel, so we may try that place as well. Totally jet lagged today so I don't feel like anything heavy so may just get some sushi at a place across from my hotel.

There is bad special teams and then there's the Titan's game vs. the Colts.

There was this

https://twitter.com/Colts/status/1731409781271769316

Four plays later, the Titans punt and have it blocked - injuring the punter Stonehouse for the season. The injury is cringe worthy enough that I'm not posting it. Colts end up kicking a FG and the Titans get the ball back. The Titans score and miss the XP with Tannehill being the holder since Stonehouse was injured.

https://twitter.com/NFLonCBS/status/1731417377256919418

They would have won if they made the XP, but didn't and lost in OT. As a result, the ST coach got whatever the home equivalent to being "tarmacked".

What an idiot. Goodell doesn't know what's good for the game if he would ban the "Tush Push". It brings an element of excitement to the game that's been missing for a very long time. And it flies in the face of the sport's specialization of positions and roles.

The Tush Push is close to a maul in rugby. Given that American football is a direct descendant of rugby, outlawing the Tush Push is further forsaking the roots of American football.

Great article from sfgate. It's an interview with Cal's Jack Clark on how, from a rugby standpoint, you might be able to defend the tush push. Bottom line is that it's really, really difficult.

https://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/eagles-tush-push-cal-rugby-coach-jack-clark-18525313.php

Mr. Slug, I generally agree with you about the idiocy of outlawing it, but perhaps from a competitive balance standpoint, a nearly indefensible play isn't something the league wants. Goal-line stands are also really exciting.

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

This is but a blip in time. Other teams will catch up with it if it isn't banned. Other teams want it banned *now* because they're lazy and/or they lack imagination.

Philadelphia may be the only team to use it right now, but other teams will catch on if only because they will have to learn how to defend it. And there's nothing wrong with augmenting your offensive repertoire by imitating Philly's success.

Reporters often making the case that the NFL is a league built around offense. The Tush Push is about precisely that: offense, and it's used in short yardage situations. Learn to defend against it, already.

This purported ban of the Tush Push is also outrageous for a different reason, one that might not be so apparent. It's like trying to ban shifts in baseball. Shifts are beatable. Learn how to bunt, already!

The Golden State Warriors blew a 22-point lead to the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday afternoon in a 113-112 loss. In what seemed like a positive performance for much of the night, the Warriors were on the verge of returning to .500. Instead, they fell to 9-11 on the season.

With Andrew Wiggins sidelined, Moses Moody remained in the starting lineup. However, head coach Steve Kerr made another adjustment to the rotation, starting Dario Šarić over Kevon Looney at center.

49ers blowout the Eagles 42-19; prove they’re the team to beat in the NFL

https://www.ninersnation.com/2023/12/3/23986709/brock-purdy-kyle-shanahan-george-kittle-brandon-aiyuk-49ers-eagles

The 49ers defense allowed the Eagles to march into their territory on the first two drives of the game, resulting in 120 yards. A.J. Brown spearheaded the first score with a 38-yard catch and run.

Mooney Ward shadowed Brown during the first two drives. He had a pass break up in the end zone which resulted in the Eagles’ first field goal. A Javon Kinlaw sack led to Philadelphia’s second kick. That made it 6-0.

Interesting to note. I was making a list of Wilcox's ten best wins and came up with the four Big Game victories the two wins against each of the LA schools, and the home victories over ranked UW and WSU teams. Six of the ten were on the road although half in the Bay Area and all of them in California. If I'd made it his eleven best the next one would have been at UW. He also beat Ole Miss away All that being said the Bears have still basically sucked on the road under Wilcox going 13-24.

LOS ANGELES – They didn't want to talk about it all season long. So, no one really brought it up.
