I keep thinking about Jorts

Expand full comment

Why when you can better use your time to think about torties?

Expand full comment

😻😻 I have two torties (one regular and one dilute tortie) and they are both the absolute best girls

Expand full comment

And clueless me had to look up tortie.

Expand full comment

We have a tortie. She drives Mrs Slug crazy by always walking in front of her, especially as she is about to head down a flight of stairs. Very petite and has a very faint meow. Demands to be petted.

Expand full comment

The dark tortie we have is very attention- and affection-hungry. In fact, as I'm typing this she just jumped onto my shoulders, lol. She is just the biggest cuddle-bug.

The other one likes affection too, but she is prone to getting a bit overstimulated by it sometimes. Though, she's been getting better at tolerating it. She likes things on her own terms a bit more. But she's also very lovable and loves belly-rubs and butt-pats and is silly, sweet girl. She's my little pal. I love them both so much, hahah. So glad we got them.

Pets can be a great addition to one's life. We've been lucky to have pets who we love and love us back. Can't improve on that.

I make gumbo/jambalaya several times per year. Fresh ingredients - not frozen. I find that the biggest variable is the andouille sausages. Buy the sausages beforehand and try them out. Aidell's is okay, but not the best. Second is toasting your flour - either dry fry (no oil) or in roux form. I prefer in roux. Third, save your shrimp heads & casings and boil them in the chicken broth. Also, it should have okra in it.

apparently the regular vaccines suck against it, yet the variant seems to be less virulent.

Not sure that's true? It's also possible that it SEEMS less virulent BECAUSE the prior vaccine protection is kicking in once people get infected.

author

yeah, I think the evidence is still unclear on that. it's so far causing fewer hospitalizations/deaths, but it seems like it's been sweeping through a younger, previously-infected population, at least in South Africa, so too many confounding variables to draw a conclusion at this time.

Expand full comment

I really hope that omicron is a harbinger that COVID is tending towards the common cold theory when it comes to mutations. More transmissible, but less virulent than the original virus or even delta.

Expand full comment

Right, previous infections is another kind of protection that might be blunting the impact of Omicron.

Which actually would be good news, if those with previous exposure to other COVID-19 variants (either through vaccination or prior infection) aren't likely to be hit hard by the new variant. Still too soon to be sure.

The Steph Curry show at MSG last night.

we were about 20 rows back on the lower level. great views and great atmosphere to start the game.

before the record, every time Steph touched the ball the crowd was on its feet. never seen anything like that before.

after Steph made the shot, they paused the game for a good 5+ min to let it all soak in and it was a nice moment of NBA history to witness.

in some ways it was good that the drama of the record ended early in the game and then i could go get food and beer and sit in my seat. the game itself was pretty lackluster. but there was also a sense of deflation after the record as if nothing else could top that at least for one night.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CXfGFz3OLsA/

Expand full comment

in a world gone mad, the world def had your back by giving Steph a shooting slump the last few games, to leave him two short. And was nice that it was over with like 5 min into the game. w/o the "ceremony" interrupting the game really. and they could go back to playing hoops w/o thinking about it anymore. If he had been 7 shy and was hunting 3s in Q4, that woulda been awkward. and then if he did it with 2 minutes to go (in a close game), would be weird to pause things.

Expand full comment

Am I the only one who's glad this is over? Coverage of this has been a bit bonkers. Meanwhile C. Paul scores 20,000 points with 10,000 assists and get 1/100 the attention.

Expand full comment

I feel it's more impressive to have 20,002 points and 10,001 assists than 20,000 & 10,000,

Expand full comment

those are nice numbers, but they aren't records.

Expand full comment
author

the two number level records have never been as big a deal as the all-time record for any particular stat, not even close.

also, I think there's a difference between excelling at the game (Paul) vs changing how the game is played (Curry)

Expand full comment

interesting. but I think that there's less, what?, panache associated with that. (at some point, he was the first with 18972 points and 9232 assists, I'd assume.) round numbers are just that.

I gave Steph's (artificial, round) 400 3s in a season a mulligan because it was > century more than the previous record, iirc (like 28y? 29x). so it was a fun number to chase.

not that it's not impressive, but not 'singular'? not sure what I'm driving at. a parallel to me (in an even more-goofy way) are things like: "draymond is the first player to have 11 pts, 8 asst, 9 Reb, 3 blocks, and 4 steals in one game". yeah, you can have fun with databases and figure all that out, but it's artificial. it's not like anyone was waiting for draymond to break (pippen's?) record of 11/7/7/2/2.

Expand full comment

altho I don't think this record is all that. not like HR (season or career). 3P shots have only been a thing for a couple of decades, and really only big the last decade (due to Steph).

For Barry with HR, I knew 61 (McGwire was 70?) and 714 (Aaron). if you asked me last year what the 3P record was and who held it, I'd prob get Ray Allen, but have had no idea of the total. [But I still think if Reggie more than Ray when it comes to 3s.] Even last night, I don't think I could have told you the total (before the game).

I know 402 (soon to be 450 or something) for a single season, since getting to 400 was such a thing (and he got it on the last day). maybe when steph retires, 4181(?) will be a number people think about. kinda like Ripken's record. (altho I have no idea where he ended, tbh.)

Expand full comment
author

McGwire was indeed 70, but Ruth was 714, and Aaron was 755.

Expand full comment

damn! I knew I was gonna get called out on one of those numbers ;-) But was too lazy to verify...and no excuse, because while I'm old, I'm not so old for Babe's record to have been in my brain for 40 years prior to Hank breaking it. I think I was 10 (mid-70s, yeah?.

Expand full comment

Chris Paul doesn't have Steph Curry's pub. This reminds me of when Mama Morton starts sporting a blonde dye job when Roxie Hart goes to trial. Meanwhile, Velma Kelly languishes in prison.

Expand full comment

Chris Paul is not as good as Steph Curry. He's great, but not as great. And definitely not nearly as flashy.

Expand full comment

and he didn't change the game. I agree with Shaq on that...there's "great" and then there's "revolutionary"

Expand full comment

Indeed. Chris Paul fits beautifully into the legacy half-court game that had been established when he entered the league. Steph Curry forced everyone to play a different way (which Paul also fits perfectly well, but he's not the same gravitational force Curry is).

Expand full comment

So glad you were there, HSB! The atmosphere seemed electric.

Expand full comment

perhaps biased observation, but there is something about Curry that is more likable than others.

i am sure LeBron and Durant and Westbrook will all break various career records too, but i cant see them getting that same level of warm adoration on the road and universally.

Expand full comment

I think LeBron also gets that kind of warm adoration these days (he didn't when he bolted to join the Heat, but that's died down over the years). The other guys, probably not.

Expand full comment

I absolutely don't like LeBron, which my kids give me crap for. All started when he left for the Heat. Also don't like Harden either (more for his style of play).

Expand full comment

Yeah, I think older fans were rubbed the wrong way by The Decision, but younger fans don't care (or are too young to remember).

Expand full comment

The thing with Curry is that maybe regular people identify with him more than LeBron and KD. In that he's small and looks like he's 15. Makes all of us regularly sized people think we have a chance to do what he does.

Expand full comment

"regularly sized" . . . he's 6'3"!

Expand full comment

Looks "regularly sized" - compared to the other players on the court. On the same topic I think that's part of the reason why soccer is so popular world wide, looks as if anyone can do it, all played by normal sized humans.

Expand full comment

That's what drew me to distance running. I saw the marathon on the Olympics and thought that that didn't require any particular skill, just lots of training. Having a thin frame and success in some early races confirmed it.

Expand full comment

yup...I can practice long 3s (and miss a bunch). but I can't practice dunks. or no-look passes. or smooth euro-steps. I guess I can for the last two, but it'd be weird, and require more people. the 3s can be just me and a hoop.

Expand full comment

I think it's also in part because his game is so joyful. Jordan (for example) won a ton of admiration, but did he every look like he was having _fun_?
