For $10, you can get a forest service permit and get lost in the woods with your kids while searching for a tree like I did last week. Our adventure may or may not have involved hitchhiking and tons of embarrassment for someone who prides themselves on not getting lost in the woods. Still, we ended up with an awesome tree and a memorable story that my kids will never forget.
So, despite Scootie's warning, there were plenty of trees when I went to get one last weekend. However, the price staggered me at $176 for a 7 foot Noble - but when I went to pay with cash (which it didn't seem like many other customers were paying) - price dropped to $69 (noice!)
I paid ~$180 for an 8 foot Noble, which seemed a bit more expensive but maybe only $10 or more from last year. God love SF prices but I'm way too lazy to shop around in the burbs for a tree.
My take is that one or both of the following is likely in Urban Meyer's case -
(1) he tried applying his approach to coaching college football to an NFL head coaching job. He failed miserably because NFL culture is very different from major college football culture;
(2) he thought he could adapt to the NFL after going into retirement from college ball and found that the challenge was not what he thought it was.
while i am sure that all paths as possible, but it seems that vast majority of good NFL coaches are long time NFL assistants that eventually rise up to be head coach.
but i guess it is always tempting to try to take a championship level college coach and see if that might work out as well.
Eh, I think there is a whole "college coaches cant succeed in the NFL" narrative perpetuated by NFL fans who dislike college football.
And if you want to limit it to coaches who have won a national championship in college first, that's going to be a very small sample size.
I'd be curious to see stats on all college head coaches who immediately became NFL head coaches, and how they compare to the average. My gut says they do fine or better than average.
The bigger story here is that the average tenure of an NFL head coach is 3.2 years (from what I read on the u-googles) -- so just how rare a "good NFL coach" really is.
From that perspective, I think there's a biased and unfair standard for college coaches in the NFL.
Harbaugh went from college to NFL and back to college. He did well in both settings. I think he went back to the college setting because he enjoys it more than the NFL, but that's my perception and it may not be how Harbaugh sees it. Also, the Yorks are craven assholes when it comes to the NFL, so Harbaugh wasn't working for the best employers.
If we're talking about national championship coaches, "when's the last time one worked out?" isn't really a valid question because the mere act of one going to the NFL is so infrequent. It's not like every year or two the national championship coach moves on to the NFL.
2021 Meyer (disaster)
2010 Carroll (..Superbowl)
2004? Saban (..could have been, but wife's heart and his were in college -- fail)
2002 - Spurrier (..fail)
1994 - Barry Switzer (..Superbowl)
1989 - Jimmy Johnson (..Superbowl)
These re so infrequent, but from this list 50% of them won a Superbowl. Only 6% of head coaches all time have won a Superbowl.
Urban Meyer's result is so extreme and so recent that all cognitive biases are going to be working overtime for whoever wants to believe the "college coaches cant succeed in the NFL" narrative. Though I do understand the games are totally different.
"National championship coaches" is indeed a small list. I'd say this one is skewed by Switzer, who probably doesn't deserve a ton of credit for that team winning a Super Bowl, given they'd already won two before he got there.
And of course Carroll went from the NFL to college and back to the NFL, so is also a different case.
Probably the better metric would be to measure all college coaches going to the NFL vs. promoted NFL assistants. And you'd also want to control for college coaches who had been in the NFL before.
Jimmy Johnson is probably the best example, yeah. Switzer just took over Johnson's established team and didn't last long. Green had been an NFL assistant before.
I cannot tell you how pleased I am that he became "available" after SC hired Riley. A significant minority of SC alums were convinced that only Meyers could provide football nirvana.
Anybody or any fanbase who willingly looks the other way given Meyers past …ahem transgressions, surely are people towards whom you wish nothing but ill will and hope life starts dealing them a series of shitty hands
Compare how Steve Kerr consistently deflects praise towards his players to how Urban consistently deflects blame. Who people gonna wanna play for? It's basic leadership stuff.
You can try to be king at the college level and you might get away with it because authority goes less questioned, but not in the league.
Urban also won at Bowling Green and Utah . . . so I think he has the ability to be a winning football coach at the college level even without the talent inbalance.

I don’t know how we ever get fully away from the billable hour. We do have more alternative fee arrangements now but they are all still directly or indirectly based on the billable hour. I think until a computer program can draft a brief/memo/contract, it will stay.
I think law firms are partially complicit, because one alternative model is a flat rate general services but firms lose out on the extra revenue for billing for larger projects.
Same. My portfolio is ludicrously aggressive, to the degree that it would give any competent money manager a heart attack, which is why I manage it myself.
I can't figure bonds, how do you win? Interest rates certain to rise next year, so NAV drops, and your yield is probably locked in for a while unless you're super short term. In a declining interest rate environment, your NAV rises, but yield drops unless you're in the perfect sweet spot as far as term. When's the best time to own what type of bonds?
You can't win in a bond fund in a rising interest rate environment. An alternative is to buy into individual bonds. However, bond rates are terrible and you can't get compensated for the counter-party risk. Hence, why I don't own bonds.
we have a couple of bond funds. Have not put $$ in in years, it just putters along growing based on interest and dividend re-investment. I don't even know what sorts of bonds are in them.
That's basically the only reason why I have them. I plan on putting in 50K on two separate funds each (10K each already) over the next few years and then just letting them slowly accumulate interest and re-investment. The whole point will be as a safety net if I need the money before the tax-advantaged accounts kick in and if I want to keep my equity investments growing for a few more years.
Some folks have more tolerance for NAV variation and want a consistent yield better than cash instruments - for income purposes, and tax exempt munis can fit this niche type of investor.

YWC, I finally saw the last two episodes of The Big Leap. Holy crap those were two great episodes. I watched the last one at the gym and good thing I didn't bring any onions to chop, but I almost did...it was close.
Finished the second season of Sex Education, quite enjoyable; almost done with the second season of For All Mankind, which is excellent, but made me think you either have to be old, or super knowledgeable about late 60's-80's American culture and politics to fully appreciate the alternate history they've created.
I posted in yesterday's DBD but I think people missed it with the late timing + excitement of signing day - but I saw the new West Side Story which is currently bombing. If you like movie musicals, and you liked the original, and you're comfortable going to the theater - I highly recommend watching. It was fantastic. I hope Rachel Zegler (Maria) and Anna Dubois (Anita) turn into stars. Mike Faist who plays Riff is also excellent.
The 1961 movie is one of my favorites . . . and I think this improved on a lot of that movie (which is still an absolute classic)
I remember the first time I watched a complete version of the 1961 one on DVD (not cut-up TV broadcast) - it will never be a particular favorite of mine, but I do recognize it as a great accomplishment.
I dug it, and I also love the original movie. I hesitate to say which one is "better" since they have different approaches to the material. It improves on some things, and some things it doesn't try to improve on (rightly so).
I'm also not sure how to determine if a movie is "bombing" in this environment. The comic book movies seem to do fine, but everything else is pretty depressed at the box office.
Getting rid of the brown face is already an improvement.
It's up to 18million after a week . . . needs about 300 million to break even. Hopefully the super positive word of mouth and reviews will give it a long tail, but it's pretty short of doing well.
(They needed this to be about 30 mil over this period to be on target)
Our rabidly anti-LGBTQ Lt. Governor just banned a graphic novel from our libraries because its subject matter is about a young trans-person. Never mind that the graphic novel section is fucking packed full of heterosexual sex, violence, and terrible things. Has he ever visited the manga/comic section of a library? I just bought a bunch of copy and am sneaking it into the library. It's passive aggressive and not very cost effective way to fight - but I gotta do it.
Librarians gonna snap that dude in half. You don't want to fuck with librarians (I'm married to one). They're ruthless and relentless - they'll murder any attempt at censorship 75 different ways. That book 'bout to be a bestseller.
I've been tussling with a land developer who is supposed to be this big environmental land protection guy up at the lake. I've met him dozens of times and I find him to be the least savory environmentalist that I've ever met. I kept thinking to myself, how could this guy be an environmentalist? He clearly only thinks about money, not the environment. Then I read this article this morning and everything snapped into clear view for me.
I have to admit this is kind of evil genius. Just make an issue out of whole cloth and then claim to solve it. My parents believe this is a real thing, and are otherwise reasonable people.
Welp, here we go...wife's sister in Texas now has a ripping case of covid and her pseudo-husband has just gone into the hospital. They both have underlying conditions but of course wouldn't get vaccinated and my wife wants to murder both of them and everyone who has been feeding them lies.
Last day of quarantine. I've been lucky - pretty mild symptoms that passed quickly. Worst part is that Dr. Ms. Newellbany doesn't let me out of the home office and basement (understandably). Best part is watching all the basketball I want.
Word on the street is Dr. Ms. Newellbany may seek to make such a living situation permanent as she and the kids have found the daily machine operates much more efficiently.
I did get more tired than usual. Ended up taking a nap around 330. I had taken a couple of ibuprofen beforehand and overheard the nurse tell the guy before me to take Tylenol not Advil. Didn't hear why. But I did read afterwards that they recommend not taking anti-inflammatories before because it could keep the vaccine from working as well.
My strongest reaction was to the regular flu vaccine, was down for 1/2 day. Had 2 day arm soreness for all 4 shots, only felt iffy for a few hours after Moderna shots 1 & 3, nothing after shot 2.
re: Cal players in the NBA & NFL. I'm a Cal alum & fan. I'm not really a fan of pro sports other than my fantasy league and when the local teams are in contention. I really don't care much if the local contending teams win or lose, but the entire community gets into it and simply more fun things are going on during these times. As for former Cal bears, I only care about their pro careers as far as they use their celebrity and clout to help the current Cal teams succeed. This by talking up their experience at Cal, helping with recruiting, donating locker rooms, etc. I don't give a whit about hearing how many alums are playing in the NBA, how many NFL linebackers went to Cal, what obscure record was broken by a former Bear, etc. At least, only as far as those tidbits raise the chances of one more recruit signing on the dotted line. Once you're gone, if you're not helping out, you're gone.
Jackson Mahomes in hot water after his entitled ass tried to cancel a KC bar. Despite being a big sports fan in general, and the NFL in particular, until this morning I had never heard of him and had no f-ing clue who this clown was...

X-mass trees
For $10, you can get a forest service permit and get lost in the woods with your kids while searching for a tree like I did last week. Our adventure may or may not have involved hitchhiking and tons of embarrassment for someone who prides themselves on not getting lost in the woods. Still, we ended up with an awesome tree and a memorable story that my kids will never forget.
Okay Clark.
Hey Griz, if you're not doing anything constructive, run into the living room and get my stogies...

Dang...I'm unsure of this reference.
Christmas Vacation, peety
haha, you bet they won't, you'll be hearing that story for decades.
Peetyjay kids next Dec: Daddy, can we go get lost in the woods again?
Did you end up walking in circles, or is that a myth about getting lost in the woods?
We get the Concolor Fir, which has the big needles and doesn't spark my wife's allergies. Good looking trees.
So, despite Scootie's warning, there were plenty of trees when I went to get one last weekend. However, the price staggered me at $176 for a 7 foot Noble - but when I went to pay with cash (which it didn't seem like many other customers were paying) - price dropped to $69 (noice!)
wow that's a huge CC markup.
Not a mark-up. That $69 is going in somebody's pocket.
as a former recipient of very generous cash "discounts," that is not my problem.
Yeah, that’s crazy.
My parents bought a 7 foot Noble for $100
That dude was pocketing the cash, for sure. Can't pocket a CC payment.
I paid ~$180 for an 8 foot Noble, which seemed a bit more expensive but maybe only $10 or more from last year. God love SF prices but I'm way too lazy to shop around in the burbs for a tree.
Just get a box of 44 candles...way cheaper!
HOLY SMOKES!
I've $110 for a 9 foot Noble in the past, one we had a tree accident, which let me to downsize a bit.
69! Classy!
Talk about a little Xmas miracle.....
Mine was $176 at Orchard in Lafayette
Well, I guess NAS on Alameda would be out of the way for you.
And I thought I had sticker shock when I paid a record $55 for a 6'+ Noble.
Costco sales a 8 foot Noble for $73.99
Yeah, I hear those things grow on trees
the "spirit" of xmas!
I always buy mine at Costco the week after Thanksgiving. I get a beautiful 8 foot tree for $43.99.

There was a good graphic about it on Twitter last night, would have saved it if I had known y'all were going to be so demanding. :-)
Seemed like most of them (there were maybe around a dozen) were .500 or below. There was one significant outlier in Harbaugh.
Harbaugh went from college to NFL and back to college. He did well in both settings. I think he went back to the college setting because he enjoys it more than the NFL, but that's my perception and it may not be how Harbaugh sees it. Also, the Yorks are craven assholes when it comes to the NFL, so Harbaugh wasn't working for the best employers.
haha we're a very demanding peoples
What's the last one that worked out? Pete Carroll?
And of course Carroll also had previous NFL experience.
Marv Levy was good. i guess he didnt win a college championship
If we're going back, Bill Walsh was a college head coach first.
If we're talking about national championship coaches, "when's the last time one worked out?" isn't really a valid question because the mere act of one going to the NFL is so infrequent. It's not like every year or two the national championship coach moves on to the NFL.

I would rephrase that: "college coaches can't succeed in the NFL if they try to coach NFL players like college kids"
Jimmy Johnson, Pete Carroll (he had a lot of NFL experience prior to going to CFB) Barry Switzer, Dennis Green are the only ones I can think of.
I would add Harbaugh to that list.
Jimmy Johnson is probably the best example, yeah. Switzer just took over Johnson's established team and didn't last long. Green had been an NFL assistant before.
1) sounds like another coach, currently plying his trade at UC Los Angeles
Oregon, LSU, and ND are regretting their coaching hires now.
He’s a well known asshole and overall terrible person. A pox on any CFB program that hires this piece of shit
I wish him the shingles in my nightly, before-bed prayers...

No doubt about that.
Why ND?
Supposedly ND has wanted Urban in the past and Urban, who is Catholic has referred to ND as his “dream job”.
Go grind on that co-ed, Catholic boy.
They all probably thinking they dodged a bullet.
As it turns out, people don't like assholes.
Compare how Steve Kerr consistently deflects praise towards his players to how Urban consistently deflects blame. Who people gonna wanna play for? It's basic leadership stuff.
You can try to be king at the college level and you might get away with it because authority goes less questioned, but not in the league.
College coaches win by amassing talent. It’s a rude awakening in the NFL when the talent gap isn’t enormous.
Urban also won at Bowling Green and Utah . . . so I think he has the ability to be a winning football coach at the college level even without the talent inbalance.

I'm hoping they renew for season 2. It will be interesting to see if they go with a totally different group.
For LOTR fans, Stephen Colbert tells us why it's the best Trilly.

that was great.
Dumbledore couldn't kill a Balrog .. killed by a HS Chemistry teacher
Walter White was a HS Chem teacher.
Ted Lasso fix until season 3 starts.

The 1961 movie is one of my favorites . . . and I think this improved on a lot of that movie (which is still an absolute classic)
this is on list of things to see
I remember the first time I watched a complete version of the 1961 one on DVD (not cut-up TV broadcast) - it will never be a particular favorite of mine, but I do recognize it as a great accomplishment.
Roles up coming as a live action Disney princess and something else as well.

No better way to get a song or book to be a best seller than to get it banned.

You mean that Sinema uses a label as a front (she's supposed to be a Green) when the ultimate objective is to wield power in any way possible?
War on Christmas
Jeremiah 10:1-25
With their resistance to vaccinations, the right is doing just fine killing Christmas all on their own.
I have to admit this is kind of evil genius. Just make an issue out of whole cloth and then claim to solve it. My parents believe this is a real thing, and are otherwise reasonable people.

But it’s also the reality of living in a gerrymandered state with all hope of actual representative government squashed.

not that this will surprise anyone, but US passed 800k deaths recently.
Welp, here we go...wife's sister in Texas now has a ripping case of covid and her pseudo-husband has just gone into the hospital. They both have underlying conditions but of course wouldn't get vaccinated and my wife wants to murder both of them and everyone who has been feeding them lies.
This is very sad.
And from a strictly cynical political perspective, it seems that they're sacrificing their most loyal voters.
conversely, it will strengthen the resolve of the surviving ones ..
that's an interesting point
They figure that the increased birth rates from abortion bans will make up for it.
gerrymandering and anti-majoritarian processes in Congress probably counteract anything up to literal decimation, I suspect
Well then you get your own man-cave.
Exactly. If Newellbany plays his cards right, this can be a win-win for everybody.
Had the booster on Tuesday, felt very lethargic all day yesterday, better today.
Welp...I guess we'll see.
My strongest reaction was to the regular flu vaccine, was down for 1/2 day. Had 2 day arm soreness for all 4 shots, only felt iffy for a few hours after Moderna shots 1 & 3, nothing after shot 2.
I had to lie down all day as sitting at a chair was taxing. I still followed all the NSD hoopla on my phone and watched Wilcox' presser.

Klay won't return before Christmas. The Nuggets game on Dec 28th we're going to might be his first game back! It will be electric if it is.

Totally hoping you can answer the GSW's gauntlet that HSB threw down with Steph's record breaker with a Klay's 1st game back of your own......

re: Cal players in the NBA & NFL.
To me, once a Bear always a Bear
some people haven't discovered Edit yet ;-)
I just did! Lol
Jackson Mahomes in hot water after his entitled ass tried to cancel a KC bar. Despite being a big sports fan in general, and the NFL in particular, until this morning I had never heard of him and had no f-ing clue who this clown was...

Maybe he'll transfer to Cal and we'll have Garbers 2.0
Dillon Gabriel still has 3 years of eligibility left. Gotta figure that may not bode well for Garbers the Younger and Jaylin Martin
College football recruiting rankings 2022: Top classes emerge during early National Signing Day 2021

Stanford number one in the Pac-12 at 15th nationally, Oregon tumbles to 31st nationally. Arizona's class in Top 50, Cal is not in the Top 50
How did U$C fall to 82? That is shocking to me, even considering the late-ish hire of Lincoln Riley.
they signed a grand total of like 7 dudes?
Maybe it's because you can see the field right away at stanfurd?
Who knows? And I have no idea why the worst team in the Pac-12 had a recruiting class ranked higher than ours.
