NY Times sues Open AI because the latter learned on its content and now competes against it

There's a lot I don't care for with the Old Gray Lady. In this case, though, I'm totally with the NYT. AI could be used to destroy what's left of local and national independent journalism.

So, yeah, a pox upon Open AI.

Expand full comment

Local and national journalism is quite capable of destroying itself. AI is a tool that augments the supply and distribution of information. Like any tool, it can and has sometimes been misused, but that isn't a reasonable argument against the use of tools.

Expand full comment

How is it that AI augments the supply an distribution of information? AI is entirely dependent on the news gathering of journalists and other human suppliers of news and information. AI does not gather news and information independently.

However, unlike humans, AI is not dependent on a source of income to sustain it. AI can, however, undercut the costs of humans, thereby threatening the model of a free and independent press. A free and independent press is a necessity for a fully functioning republic. Therefore, a world in which AI becomes the primary disseminator of news represent a threat to human liberty and even justice.

Expand full comment

where exactly is an AI tool designed to get news stories gathering the content from?

Expand full comment

It's published, and out there for all to read, unless you are a computer, or a robot. Can't have them being informed.

Expand full comment

What's your point? The snark seems to obscure it.

Expand full comment

I find it fascinating that some entity publishes information, wanting it to be read, but also takes the position of "don't dare actually put the information gleaned to productive use". Journalism is about spreading knowledge, not suppressing it.

Expand full comment

I couldn't disagree more with that position. The NYT is a commercial enterprise, they publish news for which people pay. If Open AI doesn't have any kind of agreement to use NYT content to train their models, then they are effectively free riding to feed their commercially product from which Open AI gets revenue - no reason that the NYT has to stand for their product being used against them.

A couple of years ago I stumbled across and started to watch Eddie Murphy: Raw. It had not aged well and I didn't get very far through it before I started looking for something else. I'd be up for watching the new Beverly Hills Cop though.

Squid Game: The Challenge (Netflix, 17/19). I will admit that neither I nor my family have seen more than the first episode of Squid Game, but we basically understand how the TV show worked. I will also admit that my family generally enjoys reality competition shows. Over the weekend, we decided to give Squid Game: The Challenge a try. It is a reality competition show based on the games played in the scripted series. First off, nobody actually dies. When players are eliminated, they are "shot" with paint guns or escorted out of the game by staff members. Second, the 10-episide season (which we watched in its entirety on Christmas Day) is one of the better reality shows we've seen, period. The games and drama are compelling, and it helps that the top prize (over $4.5 million) is really worth getting emotional over. For those willing to watch, the episodes with marbles and the glass bridge are especially tense and entertaining. For reality TV fans, this is a must see.

Texas State beats Rice 45-21. As a reminder, Rice's starting QB JT Daniels medically retired last month, which meant that OC Marques Tuiasosopo had to turn to his 2nd string QB, who tossed 2 pick sixes in the first 20 minutes of the game but the game was still close. Rice then went their 3rd string QB for a series, before returning to who threw a third INT. They then went with their 4th string QB tossed two more INTs - which is how you can have the ball for 30 minutes and have fewer than 200 total yards.
