Footage of Xmas day bombing in Nashville. And screw semantics -- this is "terrorism"

https://twitter.com/MNPDNashville/status/1343362483411628033

Berkelium97's avatar

I was very surprised at how little I heard about this story over the weekend. If he were brown, it would be front page, 24/7 news. But an old white guy who reportedly blows up an AT&T building because was paranoid about 5G registers nothing more than a shrug.

Cugel's avatar

Eh, I think it comes down to two things: 1) nobody died, 2) holiday news lull.

Scootie's avatar

Also, no known motive at this point.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Yep, Trump didn’t even bother to tweet about it or if he did I missed it. Sadly if this this guy was black, brown, or Muslim then trump would have tweeted about it 20 times and it would be all over the news.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think he was probably waiting for the ethnicity of the suspect.

DC Trojan's avatar

Using a more "standard" definition for terrorism in reference to CONUS violence would mean doing things like admitting that the anti-abortion movement in the 80s & 90s suborned domestic terrorism, or accepting the possibility that self-appointed militias look an awful lot like aspiring versions of what we'd call paramilitaries in other countries.

As for Nashville, an announcement and then a badly damaged business area from a bomb rang more than a few bells from my childhood in the "golden era" of Euro terrorism.

Cugel's avatar

You mean the IRA and the ETA? Recently read "Say Nothing" about the troubles; recommended.

Baader Meinhof, Carlos the Jackal, ASALA...

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

that's cool. we visited once but you needed a good guide to give you the inside scoop and give you a sense of the vibrancy and the colors.

goldenone's avatar

Yes, the ancient version of the golden arches.

SGBear's avatar

Did you have any primary, middle, or high teachers who got into trouble?

SGBear's avatar

The middle school PE teacher who was a known pervert (volunteer to adjust girl's bras). Fired.

The middle school computer teacher who drank vodka in her coffee cup. Fired.

My high school football coach embezzled money and I was subpoenaed, but never testified. Fired.

A HS guidance counselor and assistant janitor caught doing the nasty in a garbage can storage area. Kids weren't grossed out that they were doing it so much as they doinked in one of the most disgusting places. Both reprimanded.

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

Band and choir teachers (2 different people) were embezzling concert money for a couple years. Fired and teaching licenses revoked, but no charges were ever filed. I don't think it amounted to enough money.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

for some reason after we left middle school in Moraga, we found out about a bunch of middle school teachers that were either crooks or worse

GoldenSD81's avatar

Sounds like a lot of these teachers were qualified to teach at Trump University.

Cugel's avatar

As far as I know... no, but one of them really should have been.

Tangtpt's avatar

The kindergarten teacher at my son's school was arrested during class I believe for burglary.

There was an English priest at my HS who disappeared very abruptly before the end of the year as did one of the kids from the dorm, we drew our own conclusions.

He was going to be a superstar for the Utes. Such a shame, and so preventable. Gun safety is so simple, but accidental shootings remain unfortunately common.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Yeah he was going to be a star for the Utes. Really tragic and sad. To bad the US doesn’t keep better statistics on accidental shootings.

goldenone's avatar

May he rest in peace. A terrible tragedy

DC Trojan's avatar

I haven't watched any bowls & am surprisingly okay with that.

Berkelium97's avatar

I've watched a grand total of maybe 30 minutes. I realized this morning that I watch the entire Rose Bowl every year no matter which Pac-12 team is in it. This next Rose Bowl? Played in Texas between two teams outside the Pac-12 and Big Ten? Hard pass.

g.oso's avatar

But it is tradition however to watch Notre Dame get humiliated on NYD

DC Trojan's avatar

I'll keep an eye on the score so I can judge how to maximize schadenfreude while minimizing actually having to watch them

GoldenSD81's avatar

A traditional unlike any other...

goldenone's avatar

I haven't watched any of them. May watch Texas-Colorado on Tuesday though.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I want to watch this game. I like Colorado and always enjoy the Alamo bowl.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I haven't as well, and will not....this whole season was a f-ing farce, risking all these kids/coaches health just for the 3 CFP games...boycott this stuff.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Same here. I haven’t watched one minute if any bowl game but I will probably tune in to watch Notre Dame get destroyed because that is a bowl game tradition and always fun to watch.

AndyPanda's avatar

You have missed some entertaining football. And Saturday night, some officiating by a MAC crew who drew one of the better bowl games of the season and made the worst night in the Pac-12 look good by comparison. (Pac-12 officials watching were envious and incredulous at the same time; they didn't realize that many calls could be missed of blown in one game. Pac-12 fans be warned; a Pac-12 crew will probably make an effort to surpass what they saw.)

Cugel's avatar

Dang, I was rooting for Coastal Carolina, but not to be.

DC Trojan's avatar

I had mixed feelings about this season - I watched some college football other than SC games, but not a lot, and I don't really care that much about either the exhibition bowls or the playoff bowls, since the only team involved that isn't on my meteor list is Alabama. (Technically speaking Clemson as a whole is not on the lis, but I am bored of Dabo Swinney)

GoldenSD81's avatar

How is Alabama not on your meteor list? I obviously dislike Notre Dame much more than Bama so I will be rooting for Bama.

I agree about being bored with Dabo but I have always liked Clemson since I was a kid.

AndyPanda's avatar

Bama isn't always particularly entertaining, but you have to respect what they have accomplished.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

All those SEC schools are dirty, so I personally can't really respect what they've accomplished. You can probably lump Clemson in with that crew, as well.

I do respect what guys like Gary Patterson has done at TCU, though.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I was on Oregon State's campus about 4 years ago and they had a big WTF sign. I think huh? I get closer and see it says #WhatToFix. They wanted people to use that hashtag to let the administration know what needed fixing on campus. You'd think they thought twice about that.

Warriors first win

https://www.espn.com/nba/recap?gameId=401267198

Curry was 11 for 25 from the field, including 5 of 15 on 3-pointers — a day after making 105 straight 3s to finish practice at the Bulls' facility.

Tangtpt's avatar

That's the second time this morning that I saw the 105 number and my brain still cannot process it.

g.oso's avatar

And no one talks about taking a knee on 3rd down at the goal line. No one. It was the catch by Agholor, the catch and run by Gaskin, the PI, the missed PAT. Yet after the game, not one mention of that 3rd down call by Gruden.

g.oso's avatar

Yesterday was the first time I watched a Rams game (or any regular season NFL game) start to finish since Goff was drafted. Man, he is not very good.

Berkelium97's avatar

I bet they're regretting that huge contract extension last offseason...

goldenone's avatar

This (I think) is maybe his last season with the Rams. The system where McVay calls the plays doesn't seem to be working. Goff may benefit from a change of scenery.

sycasey's avatar

I'm not sure Goff is going to get a better situation than McVay's offense with a good defense backing them up.

g.oso's avatar

from the very limited viewing of his career and current teammates, he needs better skill players around him.

sycasey's avatar

Hmm? The Rams have had pretty good skill players for most of his time there.

GoldenSD81's avatar

I don’t think they will cut or trade him after this season but next year will be his final chance to prove he is the future QB for the Rams.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Love Goff but he's not the answer there. Not sure a change of scenery will help him, as his arm is average. Plus he has small hands. ;-)

sycasey's avatar

I also think I saw that he was playing some of the game with a broken finger?

goldenone's avatar

Goff sacked three times, intercepted once in loss to Seahawks. As the broadcast said, he is becoming consistently inconsistent.

g.oso's avatar

He has zero pocket awareness.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I think the real puzzler was sliding down untouched, short of the first down in around their own 40 in the 4th Q...Jared has to have better situational awareness there, especially with no LB really putting heat on. Huge play - while the slide is definitely the safer play, he has to be smarter there....just can't make that mistake in year 5

chowder's avatar

This is the third year in a row, McVay's offense starts strong and dwindles as the season progresses. Methinks other teams figure out the boy wonder's O and he doesn't adjust.

GoldenSD81's avatar

He had a strong start to the season but has really struggled down the stretch. He might have broke his thumb on his throwing hand in the 2nd quarter so that partially explains his struggles yesterday.

DC Trojan's avatar

apparently this has been going on for a while, the issue is that Loudoun county theoretically provided an easement in 1871 there's no proper record of same; the owners of the farm on the VA side previously had some kind of lease agreement but now want to either get a lot more in lease payments (apparently based on gross revenues not net) or take over the entire operation. The current owners aren't having it.
