We're making a movie!

My wife has been working hard writing and prepping for her directorial debut short film that we will be filming this Spring. I'll be one of the folks producing it and doing my best to provide a net positive for the project.

Inspired by events in her childhood, The Drop Off is a western noir take on two parents meeting for the first time to exchange their young kids after their divorce.

We are working hard to get the word out to our extended networks, so if you are interested in supporting female directors and young artists, please check out our project: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/thedropoff/the-drop-off

heyalumnigo's avatar

That looks so cool!

CruzinBears's avatar

Thank you! We are excited, we have a great actress lined up for the lead and working on casting for the ex-husband and kiddos right now.

Berkelium97's avatar

Congrats. Sounds like a clever take on the topic.

CruzinBears's avatar

Thanks, she has some really creative ideas for blending western themes and surrealism with a modern story. The video on the page gives a good synopsis of the film and the mood she's going for.

rocksanddirt's avatar

that sounds fun! Good Luck to you guys with this project!

Cugel's avatar

Watched a Noir movie this weekend "Ride the Pink Horse" - it was a good, interesting and different type of Noir. Anyway, being a Criterion disk, it came with some extras, a film prof talking about the movie and Noir in general, and she said something that I had never considered but is obvious once you think of it - back in the day, when Hollywood was churning out dozens of these films, nobody ever set out to make a "Noir" film, it's not a genre, they were just telling stories.

CruzinBears's avatar

Exciting update, we were just selected as a Project We Love by the Kickstarter staff!

Berkelium97's avatar

I can only justify $15+ on a sandwich if it's a really good version of one of those pastrami sandwiches that is big enough to keep you full for the whole day (and maybe enough left over for lunch the next day).

g.oso's avatar

a whole ass sandwich thread and no mention of Little Lucca's

CruzinBears's avatar

I didn't see it on his list, but the best sandwich I've found in the South Bay (L.A.'s) is from Mickey's Italian Deli in Hermosa Beach. Perfect Italian-style subs right on the beach.

Cugel's avatar

RIP Oakland's Genova ☹️

g.oso's avatar

Italian Combo on dutch crunch

BentPawn(Don)'s avatar

I lived off of that for most of my 20's post graduation. So good.

Scootie's avatar

The sandwiches at Lunardi's supermarkets are truly next level and are around $8. Belmont, Millbrae, Danville, Pleasant Hill, Campbell, San Bruno.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Really? I've been in the one in Pleasant Hill a few times but have never bought the prepared food there. I'll have to try it out.

Scootie's avatar

He's recommending a sandwich from Lee's. There's one in my building and it's so gross we refer to it as "yesterday's food today."

SGBear's avatar

When I worked in SF Financial District, I would love to do down to Lee's when I felt like getting a cheap sandwich and getting "NEXT!!! NEXT PLEASE!" yelled at me in a Cantonese accent.

Scootie's avatar

I will confess that I do enjoy their microwaved scrambled egg and american cheese breakfast sandwich.

g.oso's avatar

I go to Lees on E 12th in Oakland to get the Viet style baguettes. I've never had their sandwiches bc Cam Huong deli is right there

rocksanddirt's avatar

isn't Lee's the place in every highrise office in SF, with cheap foods?

rocksanddirt's avatar

they make adequate sandwiches, but no more than that. Certainly not 'best' of anything.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

I had to give up on Lee’s rather forgettable sandwiches - bread was stale just one too many times...rather disappointing

Tangtpt's avatar

Ooooohhhhh, yeah. Philippe's is killer. The place that invented the French Dip sandwich. Great with their spicy mustard.

Ruey Yen's avatar

I definitely have nostalgia for Philippe and do try to go when I am back in LA. Lamb double (or even triple) dipped is my go-to there. Since those opportunities are kind of rare, I have never got to try their competitor Cole's even though I have heard good things about them.

Cugel's avatar

This is a great thread and now I'm hungry.

goldenone's avatar

Turkey on Dutch Crunch from the Sandwich Zone in Berkeley, $5.49 with everything on it.

goldenone's avatar

Paul Reubens from Ike's Love and Sandwiches on College Ave. Slightly creepy pastrami sandwich...

CruzinBears's avatar

I miss Dutch Crunch rolls, I never see them as an option in Socal, but seem to be a staple at Bay Area delis.

Berkelium97's avatar

Once in a great while I find them out here in MD. A local Trader Joe's has them in stock occasionally. Top-tier sandwich bread, for sure.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

They were a staple at the old Piccolo Pete’s deli near the ‘Stick...that was a damn good sandwich for pre-game tailgating in September, when the weather was nice...

CruzinBears's avatar

Oooooh following for that list. I second The Godmother from Bay Cities in Santa Monica.

SGBear's avatar

Something untoward is happening at Lincoln Project.

Berkelium97's avatar

While I enjoyed watching them go after Trump, I've always had a "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" perspective of them. I doubt I have much in common with them in terms of preferred policy.

CruzinBears's avatar

Samsies, I support their end goal, but they can kick rocks for all I care.

sycasey's avatar

Yup. I'm not going to complain about them running attack ads against Trump and other Republicans. I also think the claims from leftists that they are a "grift" are a bit overblown and thinly-supported. But I'm also not going to send them any money.

rocksanddirt's avatar

The whole thing from start to end and everyone involved is untoward.

Scootie's avatar

Is it untoward though? If their former employee had it on her work laptop, it's not hacking. They're entitled to anything on it. It's not NICE, but did anyone think they are nice? Seems like a bunch of jackholes all around to me.

DC Trojan's avatar

Let me guess, now that one of their founding members has been exposed as a possible predator, there are accusations of financial impropriety.

rocksanddirt's avatar

apparently the dating app went public this week, and shot way up.

sycasey's avatar

Maybe the best Transformers movie?

Cugel's avatar

Is that like the tallest dwarf?

sycasey's avatar

Little bit. But I'd say it's at least normal human-sized.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Agreed. It was the best for the Transformers movie and a generally entertaining movie for a summer popcorn flick. I was pleasantly surprised.

Ruey Yen's avatar

I have only heard of that character because she is in Young Justice, which had a tremendous first two seasons before a kind of disappointing third season after a long wait.

Wiata78's avatar

I enjoyed Young Justice. I don't think I ever saw season 3 though.

Ruey Yen's avatar

Season 3 was made for the now-defunct DC Universe, but the episodes and season 4 should be on HBO Max.

Dang, the links below that story lead to some DARK places.

SGBear's avatar

What are the universities that you like/root for and have zero connection (you, relatives, close friends went there, local school)

heyalumnigo's avatar

UNC. The only reason I like UNC basketball is because back around 80 or 81 there was only one basketball game per week, on Sat. And the only teams were usually ND, UCLA, UNC, Indiana. So I liked UNC. And it didn't hurt that they lost in the National Championship in 81 and won it in 82.

Similar to why I was a Dodgers fan. First baseball game I remember watching was a Dodgers game on TV back in 76 or 77 and saw Garvey on deck and asked my dad why his name was "gravy".

Ruey Yen's avatar

I also had a soft spot for UNC Basketball due to being a MJ fan. That not-so-strong allegiance was instantly gone when I did semi-regularly go to Maryland games when I was in graduate school there (and before Maryland ditched the ACC for B1G).

heyalumnigo's avatar

Yeah I could see switching when you don't have such a huge love for a program. If I had gone to an ACC school I still would've rooted for UNC and against Duke.

SGBear's avatar

Vandy. I have a lot of respect for them trying to be competitive in a region where 90% of the population would gladly/instantly compromise their academics if it meant being competitive in football/basketball.

Cugel's avatar

Almost any OoC team after going to their stadium to watch Cal play them* Was rooting hard for the Fightin' Kiffens against Bama in October '20.

*offer does not apply to Ohio State

sycasey's avatar

I had some Notre Dame grad friends I hung out with, went to bars with, etc., in my mid-20s, so I have a bit of a soft spot for ND. Those guys (and gals) were REALLY into the football team, as you might expect. I also went with them once to watch the Irish beat Furd, so that was fun too.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Ugh...ND vs Furd is rooting for a meteor. At least in 2022 we can all go to the DBD tailgate and watch Cal beat ND.

sycasey's avatar

Hah, a lot of people hate ND and I get it. I just had personal friendships with some fans.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

One of Newellbany and my best friends went to ND, yet it's still fun to hate on the Irish, due to their air of scumbag football entitlement...still getting some traction on the Manti Te'o gig, which is nice...

rocksanddirt's avatar

I want 'furd to win two games each year. $c and ND.

Oregon QB Tyler Shough is grad transferring.

Berkelium97's avatar

That's surprising. He still has three years of eligibility remaining.

I thought the Anthony Brown goal line packages were pretty effective in the Pac-12 title game, but overall this looks like it might be a downgrade for the Ducks offense.

g.oso's avatar

not a downgrade at all. Ty Thompson will be very good in that offense

Berkelium97's avatar

Ah, forgot about Thompson. I'm not thrilled with how brilliantly they've been recruiting recently.

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

The goodie bags and fully loaded Escalades from Uncle Phil sure don’t hurt either

Fire Starkey's avatar

he graduated and has been recruited over. He struck me as being a high G5/low P5 starter

SGBear's avatar

Grad transfer? He was an '18 HS graduate, so he'll graduate in 3 years.

Also, this puts the second-stringer Anthony Brown as the next in line, unless Oregon doesn't want to have a super senior for a single year and start the Jay Butterfield era.

SGBear's avatar

... oh, I forgot that Ty Thompson already enrolled early.

g.oso's avatar

Ty Thompson is going to wreck us for the foreseeable future.

GoldenSD81's avatar

Wasn't he their starter this?

Also, wasn’t he a RS sophomore?

Trump's lawyer's opening statement is even worse than I expected. It's all deflection and blame: Hillary said Russia stole the 2016 election! BLM protesters were violent in DC! Trump said many nice things about law enforcement!

I'm sure they'll break out the Chewbacca Defense by the end of this trial.

https://www.politico.com/interactives/2021/magazine-nikki-haleys-choice/

Cugel's avatar

Actually, it's a very good article (but long) that I think is both fair and critical in near equal measure.

Cugel's avatar

What? Did you read this? It is the opposite of fawning; more on the damning side.

rocksanddirt's avatar

Politico is generally fawning over politicians.

CruzinBears's avatar

They know where their bread is buttered

DC Trojan's avatar

One of the ways you can tell she's politically adept is that she can claim to have been part of the Trump administration but in a role where the expectations were to do nothing and she can blame everything on the UN - so she can claim the shroud for the MAGA crowd, but she's not too close to any of the other shit that is going to keep coming out.

Yeah, a well thought out plan. No respect from me, however, still makes her a whore.

JTA has been a cool story. Grew up in Oakland (95th Ave), turned down top tier D1 schools, including Cal, to play at Marquette.

https://theundefeated.com/features/juan-toscano-anderson-still-cant-believe-hes-on-the-warriors/

CruzinBears's avatar

He's been balling out. The center situation is less than ideal, but seeing him take full advantage of the extra playing time is awesome. I had no idea about his story!

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think he's on a two way contract so he can only play in a certain number of Warriors games and then he has to go back to the G-League. I think there have been calls for him to be converted to a regular contract but then they'd have to get rid of someone. The thing he has that neither Looney nor Wiseman has is the ability to hit the 3. And the energy factor. Will be curious to see what happens with his playing time as Looney and Wiseman come back.

CruzinBears's avatar

That doesn't stop Wiseman from trying! Although he did hit three 3s in one game. I'm not sure who you would swap though, Mulder maybe?

Berkelium97's avatar

I hope the AD has the courage to fire Fox at the end of this season. We're back to Wyking levels of ineptitude with no signs of future improvement.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I wish, along with probably a lot of others, that we would've hired an up and comer from a mid-major, similar to Ben Braun.

Cugel's avatar

I've struggled with this - I don't think we're anywhere near as bad as when Wyking was there - but we had better players with Wyking, who are now doing great at other college teams, BUT I don't think Fox is the answer. Can't recruit for shit, always seems to be perpetually scowling, the team never looks like they're having fun.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Well his first recruiting class was just trying to get anyone since it was so late. And most of our good recent recruits are grad transfers right? So they'll be gone next year.

sycasey's avatar

I definitely don't think he's as bad as Wyking, but that was a very low bar to clear. Fox's history seems to suggest he's average at best, so I'm not surprised if that's where we wind up under him.

goldenone's avatar

Not really sure what to do about Fox. The team is playing hard, just can't execute down the stretch. If we did execute, we have the talent (sans Thiemann) to be a .500 club. I like Brown.

But if the ceiling is .500 that's pretty underwhelming and it points to the fact that Fox is not the answer but kind of a burned out retread. Need a young up and coming coach who can recruit and relate to the players. If that means giving a young promising assistant coach somewhere a chance at a head coaching gig so be it.
