I really enjoy the show, but I think the extra downtime between episodes makes me think too much about the not-so-clear motives of a lot of the characters, especially the main antagonists (Flag Smashers).

sycasey's avatar

That's definitely a bit of a hole in the story thus far.

Terence's avatar

There was supposed to be a respiratory virus plotline (Mama Donda dies from it, and they're stealing vaccines in episode 2) - which was obviously cancelled and they've had to refilm some scenes - like Erin Kellyman/Flag Smasher's conversation outside the headquarters where she's wearing a hoody to cover up her different hairstyle.

So some of the motivation and background has been clunky

Cugel's avatar

Last episode was really, really good.

sycasey's avatar

Indeed. The previous episode had me worried that the show was starting to spin out in to too many unrelated subplots and padded-out action scenes, but this one was propulsive and to the point.

DC Trojan's avatar

my wife and daughter have been continuing their "remote school" habit from Wandavision of watching the latest episode late Friday morning before getting a carry out lunch.

a perfectly decent album by the Cult

g.oso's avatar

I saw them perform it in its entirety almost 20 years ago at the Warfield in SF

DC Trojan's avatar

I fear they're too creaky to do that now, but I'd think about going anyway.

g.oso's avatar

I saw them in 2019 when they did the Sonic Temple Redux tour. Ian does not have the pipes he used to, but still a super fun show. They pulled out out a few rare ones for that

Before I watched the video, I was just reminded that I have not taken a Southwest Airline (whose stock symbol is LUV as I learned from an inflight magazine crossword puzzle) in 5+ years.

Anyone here watch that sort-lived HBO show Vinyl? Overall it deserved to get cancelled, but the pilot directed by Martin Scorsese was all kinds of awesome.

'White Lives Matter' rallies flop as hardly anyone shows up

https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/white-lives-matter-rallies-flop-hardly-anyone-shows-rcna650

In semi-private, encrypted chats, neo-Nazis and other far-right extremists planned rallies in dozens of cities Sunday to promote their racist movements and spread their ideologies to larger audiences.

Hyped by organizers as events that would make “the whole world tremble,” the rallies ran into a major problem: Hardly anyone showed up.

The “White Lives Matter” rallies, the first major real-world organizing efforts by white supremacists since 2018, were planned on the encrypted app Telegram after many aligned groups were alleged to have taken part in the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S Capitol.

Of course there was one in Huntington Beach. Orange County really is the KKK hotbed of the West.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I saw the one video of the asian guy confronting the KKK member, then getting hit.

Terence's avatar

Orange County, eastern Idaho, eastern Oregon, Northern California between Marin and the Oregon border.

Cugel's avatar

What? Parts of Northern California, sure but not all. That's a big area.

Terence's avatar

It's a broad generalization. Just like Orange County and eastern Oregon and Idaho. But the amount of Jefferson State signs one sees driving up there.

Cugel's avatar

Dude, includes all of wine county, which while economically segregated, is hardly a bastion of in your face racism.

Received my first dose of Moderna on Friday afternoon. No side effects other than some lingering muscle soreness at the injection site for a couple days (more pronounced than the typical soreness from a flu shot).

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

2nd Pfizer dose this weekend. no symptoms at all.

maybe i was a little tired and took a few naps this weekend.

but that is not unusual even on a normal weekend

dcblue's avatar

Good to hear. I get mine tomorrow.

SGBear's avatar

In Florida now. Based on what I've seen over the past four days, we are due for a resurgence in Covid.

Peetyjay's avatar

Got my second dose of Moderna last Saturday at 11 a.m. By 10 p.m. I had slight chills and felt a bit achy, slept terribly that night. Woke up feeling the same yesterday morning, took 400 mil. of ibuprofen, my usual caffeine dose, and felt better an hour later. Felt a bit off last night, then woke up this morning feeling more or less back to normal. Oh, and the injection site was so sore I could not sleep on that shoulder Saturday or Sunday night.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i guess it is not surprising that w/ no test requirements, more people apply, and fewer people w/ top grades and top scores and the overall pct admitted will drop

I forgot to give the amount of a rivalry game. @How do I give to honor a game in which Furd forfeited? 1.00 just doesn't seem right.@

g.oso's avatar

They forfeited the 1902 rose bowl with 8 minutes left in the game. Lost to Michigan 49-0

g.oso's avatar

Day 1: Cal currently in 6th, behind perpetual leader Michigan, followed by Ga Tech, Florida, Georgia, and ND. Next closest Pac 12 team is Oregon in 9th. Other schools of noted, tOSU in 13th and Texas (18) is finally beating Maryland (20).

GB III's avatar

Hey g.oso, how do you see the results from the EDSBS Bowl?

Thanks.

Fire Starkey's avatar

Harsh but fair on the Texas/Maryland comment

Terence's avatar

Dropped $146.96 for the 82, 86, 93, and 2009 big games cumulative scores.

GB III's avatar

Awesome. I did $102.65. (Not for any reason in particular). If we beat USC, UCLA and Stanfurd this year I pledge to triple it.

Terence's avatar

Oh I'm keeping some powder dry to see if we can make top ten this year (like Scootie's goal) and of course beating Stanford.

GB III's avatar

I think the Charity may make it’s stated goal of $200k after 1 day.

Good for them. I am glad to participate. And, if the Charity Bowl is the only thing that Cal wins this year, I would be happy with that.

Game #10: A’s get back on track with first series win

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2021/4/10/22377673/oakland-as-game-10-houston-astros-score-result

The slow start to 2021 is officially over.

Sure, the Oakland A’s aren’t done climbing all the way out of the hole they dug in the standings, still holding a 3-7 record and a spot in the AL West cellar. But after dropping their first six contests, they’ve now won three of the next four, all against top-notch opponents.

The latest triumph was a comfortable 7-3 win over the Houston Astros, earning the A’s their first series win of the year in the three-game slate, and on the road no less. That comes just days after Houston swept the green-and-gold in four dates at the Coliseum, and Oakland looked every bit as dominant as their division rivals had in their first matchup.

goldenone's avatar

I'm feeling a lot better about the A's chances in the AL West. Just need 4 to get to .500.

Fire Starkey's avatar

this is the worst tank job I've ever seen.

Clayton Kershaw wins duel with Max Scherzer, powered by Zach McKinstry

https://www.truebluela.com/2021/4/11/22378815/clayton-kershaw-duel-max-scherzer-zach-mckinstry-home-run-dodgers-nationals-recap

The Hall of Fame pitching duel lived up to the hype, for two-thirds of the game anyway, while Zach McKinstry provided the offense in leading the Dodgers to a 3-0 win and a sweep of the Nationals on Sunday afternoon at Dodger Stadium.

Scoring opportunities were scarce thanks to Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer both being on their game.

“The level of compete with these guys is next level. Obviously when they’re opposing one another, I think it might be — if at all possible — heightened that much more,” manager Dave Roberts said before Sunday’s game. “To watch the best of our generation go head to head, I’m excited.”

heyalumnigo's avatar

Great game by both HOF bound pitchers. Neither game an inch and Scherzer got unlucky when his CF couldn't find the ball in the sun. Scherzer was lights out.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Soto is such an amazing hitter. Two HRs on Saturday. His bat is just so quick.

dcblue's avatar

Kind of hard to believe but Robles, the CF who lost the ball in the sun, was originally thought to be the better prospect. Even if the Nats continue to suck they're worth watching just for Soto ABs

clapdoc's avatar

And they will not continue to suck, not with that rotation.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Their rotation should carry them. Even their no 5 looked good. Ross shutdown the Dodgers.

dcblue's avatar

That's what they're counting on. Hopefully get some runs when they get guys back off the covid list.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Weird but McCovey Chronicles doesn't have a recap for yesterday's game so I had to check ESPN that the Giants beat the Rockies 4-0.

sycasey's avatar

Another casualty of SB Nation's stupid disproportionate response to the California freelancer law (that has since been rolled back anyway) is that McC now only has one writer on staff who is also assigned to cover the Warriors and Sparks, and he can't write up every single game.

Beach Volleyball beats Stanford in a rivalry that still needs a "Big" nickname

Big Beach Spike, aka Big Beach, for all you beaches....

Cugel's avatar

Isn't it "sand", not "beach"?

Ruey Yen's avatar

When the sport was first introduced, it was called "sand volleyball" (supposedly to be more inclusive for the schools without access to ocean/lake/water) but after 2 years, NCAA rebranded it as "beach volleyball".

Ruey Yen's avatar

It was "sand volleyball" as an emerging sport, but NCAA renamed it "beach volleyball" ahead of the first official NCAA Championships in 2016

https://www.ncaa.com/news/beach-volleyball/article/2015-06-30/ncaas-newest-championship-will-be-called-beach-volleyball

sycasey's avatar

I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere.

The Cal women's soccer coach needs to drop zonal marking ASAP

DC Trojan's avatar

Cal lost 5 - 0 to SC. I saw the goal replays and at least 3 of them were because Cal defenders had plainly been told to stand in fixed locations, which left the goalie terribly exposed.

Cugel's avatar

Ah, misread that as "zonal marketing" - need more coffee.

clapdoc's avatar

To be fair, they should probably spend less time with zonal marketing during the game as well.
