Chauvin verdict

SGBear's avatar

GUILTY. All charges.

rocksanddirt's avatar

I am somewhat relieved. I keep seeing things talking about 'justice'; this doesn't seem that way to me. This small bit of accountability only happened because a bystander uploaded the entire incident to a public website.

MoriBear's avatar

From Rodney King to George Floyd, the only times this violence "occurs" is when it's caught on video. Otherwise it's all Mayberry...thanks goodness for ubiquitous smartphones!

Terence's avatar

If there was no recording, Chauvin is 100% walking free today.

rocksanddirt's avatar

yep. video/stream/etc your interactions with the police. It is not generally a 'one bad apple' situation.

dcblue's avatar

It was a nice day in DC so I was about to go outside and read when I heard a verdict was due within the hour. I wasn't expecting a verdict I would hope for so went out and read. Pleasantly surprised when I came back in.

Cugel's avatar

Well, however it happened, it's a better result than him facing no consequences.

sycasey's avatar

I also feel like this conviction helps make it so that other cops think twice about being physically aggressive.

rocksanddirt's avatar

I think it is unlikely to affect other cops very much, with the exception that if there is a crowd around they might ease up on the excessive force, due to videoing. There have been two video taped murders by police in the three weeks the trial was going on. (the not a taser incident, and the 13 yr old in chicago).

Next time, instead of reading FauxNoise comments, just punch yourself repeatedly in your groin a few hundred times.

I do it as amusement...then I get bored. but there are enough interlopers (i.e., non-MAGA folks) there to make it interesting.

What century is it? Chad's head of state killed in battle. Then again, it's Chad, so people are taking this news with a huge pinch of salt.

I love this place. The fact that we can do effortlessly shift from discussing Steph Curry's otherworldly shooting to the history of heads of state dying in battle is breathtaking! Kudos to all!

Ancient times? The emperor Trajan Decius was the first Roman emperor to be killed in battle against a barbarian opponent in the year 251.

SGBear's avatar

The Axis puppet head of state of Libya was killed in 1940, but it was friendly fire, so that doesn't count in my book.

Tecumseh, the head of the Shawnee, was killed in battle in 1813 but I doubt he was the last Chief to die in battle.

Before that, perhaps King James IV, King of Scotland in 1513? James IV, like his father, and his grandfather before him were all killed in battle. His son James V died shortly after falling ill after losing a battle. James V's death meant that his daughter succeeded him. She was Mary Queen of Scots, which also ended poorly

Went to the 91 Citrus Bowl with HSB. Flew into Pensacola (because the $199 RT Amex flights only could take us to Pensacola) and drove to Orlando. Went to Epcot on NYE. Was a great trip.

I don't feel any other need to go to Florida other than on Sept. 19, 2026 for the Cal/Florida game.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

also, we have have kept the same flights to Pensacola and driven to New Orleans if we hadnt gotten screwed out of the Sugar Bowl that year by ND

heyalumnigo's avatar

Yeah I remember the Sugar Bowl reps at the UW game that year. Everyone stuck around because the game came down to the last play and gave the reps a cheer.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

it's been about 10 days since my 2nd shot. i am still itchy, but i cant tell if it is from the vaccine or not.

another friend told me last night about her experience 10 days after 2nd shot >>

I had a bad headache, mild brain fog, and muscle aches for about a day after the shot and then I felt better for 3 days, and then I started experiencing the same symptoms again, minus the muscle aches and it just hasn't gone away.

Cugel's avatar

After I got my second shot, I did something I never have I ever: blocked the trash from getting picked-up by leaving my truck parked in front of the dumpster. :(

Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

Do they know if the manufacturer of the vaccine tends to influence different side effect symptoms...Moderna v Pfizer? Or are they pretty universal...

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i got Pfizer, my friend got Moderna i think. i have heard random stories associated w/ both but havent noticed any particular trend. but i admittedly did not try too hard.

my guess is that they are pretty universal ...

goldenone's avatar

I get my second shot on April 27th (Pfizer). Last time I had some fatigue on day three after the shot so I had to take a nap during the daytime.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

i took some good naps this weekend for no particular good reason

dcblue's avatar

I've heard Moderna is a little worse but I don't think that's been documented. I got Pfizer and had about a day of stiffness at the injection site but that's it. But as my (younger) sister said, older folks tend to have fewer reactions.

TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I do wonder if the possible/anecdotal heavier effects from Moderna could have to do with having 100 ug of vaccine per dose (compared with Pfizer's 30 ug): https://www.statnews.com/2021/02/02/comparing-the-covid-19-vaccines-developed-by-pfizer-moderna-and-johnson-johnson/

Also, I don't believe there are too many menstruators on this board, but there may be menstruators in your life. Please have them check out this study from UIUC and fill out the survey: https://redcap.healthinstitute.illinois.edu/surveys/index.php?s=LL8TKKC8DP

I, for instance, started my period 5 days early when I got my first shot and 7 days early when I got my second shot.

MoriBear's avatar

"I, for instance, started my period 5 days early when I got my first shot and 7 days early when I got my second shot."

Not something you see much on a college sports blog ;-)

But will pass on to my wife, for whenever we can find a slot for her. She missed the 1 April 50-yo cutoff and supplies are short now.

Btw, I've heard "Pfizer has worse 2nd shot symptoms", but it's all anecdotal. I have M2 on 4 May, so interested to see how it goes...

Just got my second shot this morning. Hoping I get over any side effects in time for the planned proposal hike on Saturday

Bow down to Steph Curry

https://www.goldenstateofmind.com/2021/4/19/22392931/warriors-curry-scores-49-leads-dubs-to-win-over-76ers

This is just getting ridiculous now.

Stephen Curry hit 10 3-pointers, finished with 49 points, and led the Golden State Warriors to a 107-96 win over the Eastern Conference-leading Philadelphia 76ers. It was close in the fourth quarter when Curry began to light up the Sixers.

The Dubs trailed 82-81 when Curry re-entered the game with 6:54 left in the game. He scored 20 points over the rest of the quarter and hit some tough 3-pointers that helped preserve the victory for the Warriors.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I started watching from about the 8 or 9 min mark in the 4th Q and it was a great game. It seemed like Steph needed the NBA Jam flame every time he shot.

heyalumnigo's avatar

The sixers have quite a few guards that are super quick and made many floaters from all different angles. It was pretty impressive.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I think the downfall for the current Warriors teams will be that the 2nd team isn't as strong as 5 years ago. Those teams had a much stronger 2nd team. Now it seems like they need to get more lower paid players because so much of the salary goes to Steph, Draymond, Klay, Wiggins, etc. Makes it tougher to keep the game close when Steph and Draymond aren't in the game.

HeyStudentsBears's avatar

definitely. when that 2nd unit came in, they usually beat the other team's 2nd unit on average.

and there were fantastic players like Livingstone and Iguodala that really knew what they were doing.

sycasey's avatar

The strength of the second unit went away when they got Durant. And of course you would make that trade every time, but the depth is gone for the foreseeable future.

Giants pitch a shutout for the second day in a row

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2021/4/19/22392996/san-francisco-giants-phillies-final-score-kevin-gausman-brandon-belt

Sometimes one swing is the difference in a baseball game. One pitch, in a game with 294 pitches, is what decides the outcome.

On Monday, that swing and that pitch came courtesy of Brandon Belt and Chase Anderson, respectively.

I particularly enjoy the caption that the San Francisco Giants social team came up with for that video: “Belt gets us started.”

SGBear's avatar

Gausman put a lot of runners on, but somehow still got the shutout.

Dodgers offense goes quiet yet again, losing streak reaches two

https://www.truebluela.com/2021/4/19/22393334/los-angeles-dodgers-mlb-news-recap-corey-seager-mookie-betts

Aside from a home run, no real offense from the Dodgers on Monday night as they fell to the Mariners, 4-3. They now have a two-game losing streak. EVERYONE PANIC!!!

Well, no. They’ll be fine. But still, losing isn’t fun. I prefer the winning streak.

On the night, the Dodgers offense had only five hits, and they stranded eight runners on base while going 2-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

The Mariners jumped out quickly, putting up three runs in the first two innings thanks to two home runs. After that, Dustin May settled down just nicely. He gave the Dodgers five strong innings, striking out eight which tied his career-high.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Ugh...Betts got hit on the forearm by a 2 seamer FB that ran in on him and it didn't sound good. X-Rays/MRI pending. A Mariners batter got hit in almost the same location by a 98 mph 2-seam FB by May and it also didn't sound good.
