Which Cal victory was the most underwhelming?

atoms's avatar

Southern Miss in 2004 apparently (too soon?)

Berkelium97's avatar

In the last few years...probably the 2016 win over UCLA. First win over a CA school under Sonny Dykes (and it was a blowout win too), but who cares because 1) UCLA sucked, 2) we sucked, 3) it was the last game of the year and we weren't going bowling.

sycasey's avatar

WSU in 2007. Nate Longshore limps around as we barely beat a Cougar team we should have blown out.

"Unsure of what kind of financial aid he might receive from the government, he feels that his options are otherwise limited. But he hopes the support of the public will help Amoeba to someday re-open and continue to thrive as a San Francisco landmark — not just for his own sake, but the city's."

Apparently Jared Goff's favorite. I say he should bail them out now that he that big contract burning a hole in his pocket. I also saw Jared at Gregoire on North side a few years back. He was eating an aioli sandwich.

Terence's avatar

Very underrated place - one of my favorite sandwich shops around town but the only people in there tended to be athletes.

Wyking Jones was in The Benchwarmers? No 3 was looking at the IMDB page for it and noticed his name. Apparently he's been in a few things. Looks like all bit parts. BTW I haven't watched The Benchwarmers.

Top Dog update

apparently so many people tried to do mail in orders that they cant actually fulfil them.

they normally get 3-4 orders/mo. they got over 150 orders recently.

apparently they are "doing ok"

I didn't get a chance to go pick up a Hot and a Kielbasa last weekend. Maybe I'll go this weekend.

Berkelium97's avatar

Best jellies: pear (honorable mention to toasted marshmallow and cotton candy)

Worst jellies: popcorn or black licorice

DC Trojan's avatar

I’ll take those black licorice ones off your hands!

heyalumnigo's avatar

you can have mine as well. Those are nasty.

Scootie's avatar

Best: Island Punch or tangerine.

Worst: black licorice, jalapeno, coconut

DC Trojan's avatar

I’ll eat them if they’re around (see earlier comment about mopping up the liquourice flavored ones) but I don’t seek them out

Fire Starkey's avatar

well I guess you wont become my daughter in law after all

atoms's avatar

What? Buttered popcorn is a very solid jelly belly flavor.

Ruey Yen's avatar

I thought the popcorn jellybeans were good on its own, but it doesn't go well with other flavors. I recall being quite annoyed by the number of popcorn beans that I got from the large bag of bellyflops when I visited the Jelly Belly factory...which was 15-16 years ago.

AndyPanda's avatar

Everybody will have their favorite, but there is no such thing as worst. Kind of like too much bandwidth or too much pitching, it is a concept that can not exist.

SGBear's avatar

Something of low dollar value that did exactly what it was supposed to do, but ended up being not a very good purchase.

DC Trojan's avatar

Unabashed pandering is the name of my game

Actual sentence from me to the 17 year old the other day: “it’s okay to not go to the highest ranked school you got into - I mean I got into Cal and went to SC.”

AndyPanda's avatar

That might point more to the choice of field of study than the value of a degree from USC, the nearly highest in class price it comes with not withstanding.

DC Trojan's avatar

I wasn’t paying retail, that’s for sure

SGBear's avatar

I bought an electric hedge trimmer. Number of times I have used it: 1. I use manual hedge shears instead.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I loved to use our old electric hedge trimmer to square up our box hedges. I couldn't imagine using manual ones and getting them all lined up easily.

DC Trojan's avatar

I have old school shears but I’ve yet to figure out how to use them at length without exacerbating an old wrist injury :(

heyalumnigo's avatar

I'll gladly pay more for better quality TP at Costco like Charmin Ultra (preferable), or Cottonelle, or Quilted Northern Ultra. Kirkland Signature is my last choice. Unfortunately that's what I've got now since due to the hoarding that was the only option they had about 4-5 weeks ago.

Scootie's avatar

Oh I am definitely #OnlyCharmin. It can be ultra strong, it can be ultra soft, it can be ultra gentle, I don't care as long as it's Charmin.

heyalumnigo's avatar

I was the same way with Kleenex Ultra soft. I Don't like any other facial tissues. When I had a bad cold with a runny nose I found the Kleenex Ultra Soft with Lotion was better. Less chafing below my nostrils.

Scootie's avatar

That's nice stuff, but don't mess up and clean your glasses with it because it's a mess.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Oh I never thought of that. I usually just use whatever tshirt I'm wearing. My two pairs of glasses are probably 8-9 years old. There are some light scratches but they aren't deep enough that they bother me.

atoms's avatar

I've found that if you clean glass with tissue and it leaves particles behind, just use another dry tissue, and voila.

Cugel's avatar

Glasses or glass? they're two different things.

DC Trojan's avatar

My wife has always preferred Scott’s toilet paper, I don’t care, but every old person who visits complains every time like she’s actually going to source special bum wiping supplies for them

AndyPanda's avatar

We have been a Northern quilted operation for some time, but based on it being what was in the store at 6:01 AM, as reported earlier, going to try the Charmin. If Scootie endorses it, as I read earlier, then I'm sure it will be excellent.

atoms's avatar

I almost always get Cottonelle. No complaints....? I've never occasioned to discuss toilet paper brand preferences before.

Berkelium97's avatar

The bargain basement toilet paper my wife picked up at Target the other day (it was all they had). It's thin enough that you can see your hand through it if you hold a single ply.

Berkelium97's avatar

Bless her heart, she didn't know we still had some Costco rolls in the basement.

SGBear's avatar

Do your local stores have TP? My buddy in Scottsdale says stores are now restocked with the blessed ply.

Berkelium97's avatar

I haven't seen any at Costco since February. Wegman's usually has six-packs of their own brand (which isn't bad, actually), but they were out last time I was there.

heyalumnigo's avatar

do you go right when they open? I know that for at least a few weeks the TP was gone probably within the first couple of hours. Not sure if they currently get shipments every day and stay stocked.

Berkelium97's avatar

I've gone twice since the lockdown, once about an hour after they opened and once several hours after they opened. When we're due for another trip, I'll try getting there shortly before they open. Other than TP, they've consistently been surprisingly well stocked.

dcblue's avatar

The local Safeway had it once when I was there in the last month. CVS has been empty. The only place that seems to have it on any regular basis is the mini-Target.

AndyPanda's avatar

We had a *MAJOR* breakthrough this morning. The household shopper for just the second time since the stay at home started was able to get some TP this morning. At 6:01 (in a store that opened at 6:00) had about 3 packages left.

Terence's avatar

Twist ordered Chinese toilet paper off the internet. I live in China and do not use Chinese brands (not because of quality issues, but the consumers who buy Chinese brands want cheapest / best value - and they're all single ply)

SGBear's avatar

A dish that you are now - under current circumstances - more frequently consuming

CruzinBears's avatar

steak and protein bars

atoms's avatar

@Does wine count?@

Also pasta's in the rotation more frequently, which isn't surprising.

Cugel's avatar

Speaking of wine, I found a new pairing for a new dish the wife has been making. She has been making a roasted cauliflower, onion, garbanzo bean & a little yellow bell pepper dish, over pearl couscous, Indian spices, with a side of yogurt (cool things down) and cilantro chutney.

I tried various big reds Zin, Syrah, or Rioja, but those weren't a perfect match. Last night I went the other direction with a Vinho Verde Rose, and I think that worked better.

atoms's avatar

Yeah, I'll even have a sauvignon blanc with spicy Indian food, but I don't mind white wine.

SGBear's avatar

What is your favorite non-English curse?

atoms's avatar

Accompanying hand gesture is mandatory

Terence's avatar

撲街!- "Pok Gai!" in Cantonese "Pu Jie!" in Mandarin, although it really doesn't make sense in Mandarin. Throughout the non-Cantonese speaking diaspora, it's often just written "PK" but the meaning has flattened away from Cantonese.

In Cantonese it literally means "to be pushed into the street" - and it means

"asshole" but like "fuck" in English, it can be used as many different parts of speech - noun, adjective, adverb, etc. etc.

"冚家鏟!" - "Haamm Gaa Chaan" in Cantonese. I don't think the first character exists in Mandarin - but it literally means "Entire Family Shovel." In Mandarin, or more polite Cantonese, they would say "全家"

What it means - "asshole", but more like "I'm going to kill your entire family and bury them with this shovel"

Give the DBD some social distancing rules without traditional units of measurement

SGBear's avatar

Please distance yourself like if everyone is the Hate Man

Terence's avatar

But the Hate Man had his pushing philosophy - where people pushed each other around.

Berkelium97's avatar

Keep at least two stiffarms away at all times.

SGBear's avatar

I have questions. Does it count if both my arms are out in front of me at the same time - like a masked zombie? And if it does, how do I secure the ball. If not, are your arms 3 feet long? And if I don't carry the ball, am I penalized 10 yards for illegal use of hands to the face? Wait a second. That last one is it. You mad genius.

CruzinBears's avatar

It would be great if someone could do a deep dive in a post about DBD social distancing rules without using traditional units of measurement. I found some social distancing rules online that can help out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/social_distancing_rules_without_measurements

It looks like the Governor of Tennessee isn't extended the stay at home order that expires on Apr 30. Vandy sent out something that says they're exempt because Davidson County, that includes Nashville, has their own health dept order that supersedes the state order. Theirs expres on May 1, but is subject to being extended based on hard data.

I don't see how Tennessee can do this; weren't they one of the harder hit states?

DC Trojan's avatar

Got an email earlier this afternoon that the remote work order for our customers has been extended through May. I’ll be curious to see if we head in June 1.

Incoming 911 calls after people start injecting bleach and hydrogen peroxide at the recommendation of the president. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-suggests-injection-disinfectant-beat-coronavirus-clean-lungs-n1191216

"President Donald Trump suggested the possibility of an “injection” of disinfectant into a person infected with coronavirus as a coronavirus deterrent at the White House daily briefing on Thursday.

Trump made the remark after Bill Bryan, a Department of Homeland Security official who leads the department's Science and Technology division gave a presentation on research his team has conducted that shows the virus does not live as long in warmer and more humid temperatures. Bryan said, “the virus dies quickest in sunlight.”

"I see the disinfectant that knocks it out in a minute, one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside or almost a cleaning," the president said during the briefing, speaking to his health officials. "As you see it gets in the lungs, it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it would be interesting to check that."

He did not specify the kind of disinfectant."

It has been and continues to be such a damning indictment of this country that we elected such an abject moron to be the president and can't get rid of him.

“The pandemic is going to take a greater toll on the conservative electorate leading into this election — and that’s simply just a calculation of age,” Andrew Johnson, the lead author and a professor of management at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, said in an interview. “The virus is killing more older voters, and in many states that’s the key to a GOP victory.”

Johnson and his colleagues Wendi Pollock and Beth M. Rauhaus projected that even with shelter-in-place orders remaining in effect, about 11,000 more Republicans than Democrats who are 65 and older could die before the election in both Michigan and North Carolina.

In Pennsylvania, should the state return to using only social distancing to fight infections, it could lose over 13,000 more Republican than Democratic voters in that age category."

MLB close to finalizing which 42 teams will be cut when MiLB gets reduced to 120 teams. As a point of reference, here was the preliminary list back in Nov 2019. Unfortunately, the Vibes (mascot: flaming s'more), Rumble Ponies, Scrappers, MuckDogs, Spinners, and Lookouts are in trouble.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories/all-42-teams-reportedly-up-for-elimination-in-mlbs-minor-league-reduction-proposal/

There was then another announcement from MLB about how this report was untrue. Not sure that they need to publicize this right now because who knows how the pandemic will change things when it's all over.

30 picks in, the Pac-12 has had 3 players taken in the NFL draft. With 1 picks left, the SEC has had a record 13, surpassing their 3 time record of 12.

Make that 15 SEC players in the first round. The SEC has the 4 highest totals drafted in the 1st round, and 6 of the top 7, all in the last 14 years.

My favorite is Peach, with Buttered Popcorn a close second. As for worst, I could have sworn there was a Blue Mint bean at one point, but all record of its existence has been scrubbed from the archives. I’ll go with Tutti-Frutti as worst, simply because it is so similar to Bubble Gum. This is an 18 given the current situation.
