Bees/birds/other nests

heyalumnigo's avatar

saw some birds flying up under the overhang, probably building their yearly nest.

clapdoc's avatar

Wife and I installed a bird feeder in the fall and the birds didn't go hog wild on the seeds until about a month ago. In retrospect, I should have seen that coming.

dcblue's avatar

They don't nest there, but there's a spot about a half mile up from Georgetown that cormorants perch on a few trees along the bank of the Potomac this time of year. Last week there were a few dozen hanging out until a red tail hawk flew overhead and they scattered..

In this age, their alternating 5 yard sections of lighter and darker green makes Autzen pretty unique.

Berkelium97's avatar

And really useful for getting a sense of how many yards a play is covering.

Eastern Washington. Red is more of an eyesore than blue.

Boise State. What an eyesore.

heyalumnigo's avatar

It was pretty neat to see it when I stopped by the stadium driving through Boise.

Co-signed.

Don't like it or Eastern Washington's all red mess.

AndyPanda's avatar

I actually like the blue turf. Not a fan of the all red one at Eastern Washington.

One local high school (whose' primary school color is a forest green) got the idea of a BLACK field. And used black jerseys, helmets, pants, and shoes for a home uniform. Just try to spot or stat a game with that combo.

Cal cutouts from last season can be picked up April 26th or 27th at the kiosk in front of Evans Diamond, for anyone who got one according to a Cal Athletics email I got today.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Dunno. Yesterday didn't have a plan so I ended up having cereal.

clapdoc's avatar

Trader Joe's Cubano wraps are both clearly not the real deal and also amazingly tasty and delicious.

heyalumnigo's avatar

Interesting. I'll have to try those. I've looked at them, but like you said, they're not the real deal so I've skipped them.

clapdoc's avatar

Nothing at TJ is the real deal but it's all pretty good.

That is an amazingly beautiful coat. Akhal-Tekes are an interesting breed. They are may have been one of the foundational horses in the development of the thoroughbred. They have performed legendary feats of endurance. The Soviet Union had success in major international competition in the 60's using Akhal-Tekes.

My second to last horse ride was with a huge horse named Chilli. I didn't ride Chilli so much as he tolerated me being on his back while he did whatever he wanted. He was incredibly strong and did not want to take commands from reins. He let me live, so I'll call that a victory.

Peetyjay's avatar

I had a horse named Chico as a kid. He was a retired trotting champion...my kidneys still hurt thinking about riding him. It was so hard to get him into a gallop, he'd usually start bucking anytime you tried. Once when riding him bareback, I decided to break him into a gallop, a foolish move given his history of bucking and my inexperience riding bareback. He didn't buck, but as he gained speed I slowly started slipping off. This happened on a long gravel road leading to my house. I ended up with some serious rasberries and bruises on my back but fortunately I managed to dodge his hooves as I fell directly underneath him.

Cugel's avatar

Searching the memory banks, I think I rope a pony as a wee lad, but I'm pretty sure I've never ridden a horse.

Tehran (Israeli-Iranian spy thriller on Apple TV+) and Roadkill (PBS Masterpiece with Hugh Laurie)...both 16/19 ± 1 (some episodes are better than others, and some plot progressions are a bit unrealistic, but no worse than how many Bourne chase scenes would be rendered moot if he just wore a hat and fake mustache).

DC Trojan's avatar

I really liked Tehran

Saw Breaker Upperers (yes, double "er" in Upperers). New Zealand semi-raunchy comedy exec produced by Taika Waititi, with a cameo by Jemaine (of course). A bit slow towards that end, but still...16/19 (gets bonus points for being an unexpected find).

btw, have been meaning to ask: where did "out of 19" come from?

Cugel's avatar

Someone made a mistake years ago with "out of 10" and it has stuck.

g.oso's avatar

and ratings need a WB (would bang) or WNB (would not bang). Also acceptable is WPB (would probably bang). eg 16/19 WB

MoriBear's avatar

I was gonna suggest a DBD FAQ...many moons ago, I had to ask what DBD meant! ;-)

Also I see ptqd (or similar) and I've not been able to figure that one out...

Peetyjay's avatar

Same here, I thought it meant day-by-day, to reflect the many mundane subjects explored on DBD.

MoriBear's avatar

I'd be curious to dig thru the archives to see what I posted as my guess, but it sure didn't involve "bear dump"!

MoriBear's avatar

never mind re: pqtm...just found it in the CGB FAQ. I *never* would have figured that one out!

Fire Starkey's avatar

MoriBear's avatar

I just saw that in the CGB FAQ, but have to say that I've not seen it used in the wild here. altho, maybe I missed it...

I did not. I was more fascinated with his ever changing facial hair

Gaetz is no doubt shitting brick right now.

"ORLANDO, Fla. — The legal peril Rep. Matt Gaetz is facing appeared to increase sharply Thursday after a court hearing indicated that one of Gaetz’s close friends, former Seminole County, Fla., tax collector Joel Greenberg, is likely cooperating with federal prosecutors.

The potentially ominous development for the close ally of former President Donald Trump came as prosecutors and a defense attorney for Greenberg appeared before a judge here to discuss the next steps in a recently expanded criminal case charging Greenberg with sex trafficking of a minor, as well as stalking, bribery and defrauding the pandemic-related Paycheck Protection Program.

“I am sure Matt Gaetz is not feeling very comfortable today,” said Greenberg's defense attorney, Fritz Scheller, after the hearing. "

2nd shot yesterday. Went to bed with no symptoms, not even a sore arm. Woke up today feeling not-so-great. Low-grade headache and body aches.

sycasey's avatar

I also had my second shot yesterday, but not really feeling anything today. Guess I'm among the lucky ones.

goldenone's avatar

Feeling OK two days after my first shot, mild headache this morning.

FiatSlug's avatar

Well, not today, but...I got vaccinated on March 19 with the J&J vaccine. Mrs Slug got vaccinated the next day with a Moderna vaccine. She goes back in 9 days for shot #2.

MoriBear's avatar

Got Moderna 1 yesterday. For many hours, not even a sore arm. Then felt a bump thru my shirt at the injection point, but when I rolled up my sleeve to investigate, I found that it was the pad of the little bandage that they'd put there. doh!

But in the end, got a bit sore (2 of 19) in the evening (and now) if I poke at it or lift my arm over my head. but no worse than if I'd been hit there by a ball or something...

Very pleased with it all! CCSF site was super organized and fast. Close to DC Krispy Kreme, where I went after for my free donut (+ 2 that I bought). first time that I'd ever been to a KK store.

Peetyjay's avatar

Second Moderna shot coming this Saturday. The first one involved a sore arm and not much else. Hoping I don't react too badly but I keep hearing otherwise from multiple people...

ak_A_bear's avatar

Got my second Moderna two weeks ago. The first shot resulted in only a sore arm the next day and that was it. However, the second shot at 2pm produced a sore arm by 8pm twice as sore as first. The following two days was classic flu like symptoms of muscle aches, fatigue and 100.5 fever for a few hours. Did not leave the house. By the third day, felt well enough for 3 mile walk. Back to 100 percent by end of first week.

MoriBear's avatar

that doesn't make me happy...I'd heard from a couple of folks that P2 has the bad effects (acknowledging that the plural of anecdote ≠ data). was hoping that M2 would be the similar to M1. I'll clear my dance card for cinco de mayo (M2 is cuatro de mayo)

Curious why Ex-Raider? He was an ex-Niner too. What a sad incident.

Which Pac-12 team (out of those shown) has the best throwback logo?

https://twitter.com/CFBONFOX/status/1379890723365904385

SGBear's avatar

I tried to google the history of the Cal logo and only found a lot of misinformation. Sources claim that this logo was the PRIMARY logo, which is BS. I mean, Cal script has been the primary logo for ages, so we're talking about secondary logos (eg, bear paw, crying bear, Block-C). I have seen this logo, but was this bear-from-a-tenth-grade-art-contest one of our main secondary logos?

Ruey Yen's avatar

I don't know why the typically excellent Chris Cramer website only had a few logos for Cal (his work for pro teams is so much better). A quick logo search lands me on this page...which some how also included the CGB logo (made by someone at SBNation and never a part of the Cal logo) https://www.logolynx.com/topic/cal+bears

sycasey's avatar

The Chris Cramer site tends to be hit-and-miss for college teams, probably because there are so many.

Cugel's avatar

It was painted on our court for many, many years.

FiatSlug's avatar

Seems to me it was first used in 2005. As I recall, it was introduced a few years into the Tedford era.

Here's ESPN using it in 2003, so at least by then.

Best: Arizona, Oregon, and Colorado

Weirdest: that Coug with the pronounced jowls.

AndyPanda's avatar

Happy Beaver is the most popular one currently. He keeps being a sales favorite despite marketing efforts with a logo & 2 different subsequent logos that despite being told they should adopt.

I also really like the Husky in a letterman's sweater. A lot better than the W of today.

sycasey's avatar

The Colorado one is not much different from what they have now.

DC Trojan's avatar

I can't. be the only geriatric in this community who is looking at the throwbacks and thinking "hang on that was the logo when I was an undergrad"

sycasey's avatar

Well, the ones they have for Colorado and Utah are basically logos that are still in use, just slightly modified. Doubt most people would even pick up on the differences unless viewing that and the new version side-by-side. Stanfurd has a different design for the block-S (sometimes with a tree in the middle), but still pretty similar. (Would have been interesting to see them pull one of the old Indian logos instead.) ASU also still uses the Sparky logo sometimes, just no longer as the primary.

MoriBear's avatar

yeah...these don't look "throwback" to me :-/

ASU one reminds me of the time at Harmon when I grabbed Sparky's trident and handed it to Oski for him to goose Sparky (or similar). Oski was conflicted and didn't do anything (I think it was during an era of Oski mayhem, so might have been on probation).

Justbear's avatar

Cal should be the Oski logo that looks like OSU

Cugel's avatar

My favorite Cal one is the arch "California" - I had an ash gray Nike sweatshirt like that in the 90's that was my all-time fave.

sycasey's avatar

ASU never should have gone away from the Sparky helmets.

goldenone's avatar

Arizona - looks really 70's.

SGBear's avatar

Yeah, I agree. That magnificent thing looks like it could be airbrushed on the side of a van, be the best-selling iron-on decal t-shirt at a county fair, or be spun around to announce that an ABC Special was about to begin.
