Cal cutouts from last season can be picked up April 26th or 27th at the kiosk in front of Evans Diamond, for anyone who got one according to a Cal Athletics email I got today.

Bees/birds/other nests

Expand full comment

Wife and I installed a bird feeder in the fall and the birds didn't go hog wild on the seeds until about a month ago. In retrospect, I should have seen that coming.

Expand full comment

They don't nest there, but there's a spot about a half mile up from Georgetown that cormorants perch on a few trees along the bank of the Potomac this time of year. Last week there were a few dozen hanging out until a red tail hawk flew overhead and they scattered..

I actually like the blue turf. Not a fan of the all red one at Eastern Washington.

One local high school (whose' primary school color is a forest green) got the idea of a BLACK field. And used black jerseys, helmets, pants, and shoes for a home uniform. Just try to spot or stat a game with that combo.

That is an amazingly beautiful coat. Akhal-Tekes are an interesting breed. They are may have been one of the foundational horses in the development of the thoroughbred. They have performed legendary feats of endurance. The Soviet Union had success in major international competition in the 60's using Akhal-Tekes.

My second to last horse ride was with a huge horse named Chilli. I didn't ride Chilli so much as he tolerated me being on his back while he did whatever he wanted. He was incredibly strong and did not want to take commands from reins. He let me live, so I'll call that a victory.

Expand full comment

I had a horse named Chico as a kid. He was a retired trotting champion...my kidneys still hurt thinking about riding him. It was so hard to get him into a gallop, he'd usually start bucking anytime you tried. Once when riding him bareback, I decided to break him into a gallop, a foolish move given his history of bucking and my inexperience riding bareback. He didn't buck, but as he gained speed I slowly started slipping off. This happened on a long gravel road leading to my house. I ended up with some serious rasberries and bruises on my back but fortunately I managed to dodge his hooves as I fell directly underneath him.

Gaetz is no doubt shitting brick right now.

"ORLANDO, Fla. — The legal peril Rep. Matt Gaetz is facing appeared to increase sharply Thursday after a court hearing indicated that one of Gaetz’s close friends, former Seminole County, Fla., tax collector Joel Greenberg, is likely cooperating with federal prosecutors.

The potentially ominous development for the close ally of former President Donald Trump came as prosecutors and a defense attorney for Greenberg appeared before a judge here to discuss the next steps in a recently expanded criminal case charging Greenberg with sex trafficking of a minor, as well as stalking, bribery and defrauding the pandemic-related Paycheck Protection Program.

“I am sure Matt Gaetz is not feeling very comfortable today,” said Greenberg's defense attorney, Fritz Scheller, after the hearing. "

Well, not today, but...I got vaccinated on March 19 with the J&J vaccine. Mrs Slug got vaccinated the next day with a Moderna vaccine. She goes back in 9 days for shot #2.

Second Moderna shot coming this Saturday. The first one involved a sore arm and not much else. Hoping I don't react too badly but I keep hearing otherwise from multiple people...

Expand full comment

Got my second Moderna two weeks ago. The first shot resulted in only a sore arm the next day and that was it. However, the second shot at 2pm produced a sore arm by 8pm twice as sore as first. The following two days was classic flu like symptoms of muscle aches, fatigue and 100.5 fever for a few hours. Did not leave the house. By the third day, felt well enough for 3 mile walk. Back to 100 percent by end of first week.

Got Moderna 1 yesterday. For many hours, not even a sore arm. Then felt a bump thru my shirt at the injection point, but when I rolled up my sleeve to investigate, I found that it was the pad of the little bandage that they'd put there. doh!

But in the end, got a bit sore (2 of 19) in the evening (and now) if I poke at it or lift my arm over my head. but no worse than if I'd been hit there by a ball or something...

Very pleased with it all! CCSF site was super organized and fast. Close to DC Krispy Kreme, where I went after for my free donut (+ 2 that I bought). first time that I'd ever been to a KK store.

I tried to google the history of the Cal logo and only found a lot of misinformation. Sources claim that this logo was the PRIMARY logo, which is BS. I mean, Cal script has been the primary logo for ages, so we're talking about secondary logos (eg, bear paw, crying bear, Block-C). I have seen this logo, but was this bear-from-a-tenth-grade-art-contest one of our main secondary logos?

I don't know why the typically excellent Chris Cramer website only had a few logos for Cal (his work for pro teams is so much better). A quick logo search lands me on this page...which some how also included the CGB logo (made by someone at SBNation and never a part of the Cal logo) https://www.logolynx.com/topic/cal+bears

Expand full comment

I can't. be the only geriatric in this community who is looking at the throwbacks and thinking "hang on that was the logo when I was an undergrad"

Expand full comment

Well, the ones they have for Colorado and Utah are basically logos that are still in use, just slightly modified. Doubt most people would even pick up on the differences unless viewing that and the new version side-by-side. Stanfurd has a different design for the block-S (sometimes with a tree in the middle), but still pretty similar. (Would have been interesting to see them pull one of the old Indian logos instead.) ASU also still uses the Sparky logo sometimes, just no longer as the primary.

Expand full comment

yeah...these don't look "throwback" to me :-/

ASU one reminds me of the time at Harmon when I grabbed Sparky's trident and handed it to Oski for him to goose Sparky (or similar). Oski was conflicted and didn't do anything (I think it was during an era of Oski mayhem, so might have been on probation).
