I havent gone down an internet rat hole in a long time but today couldn't remember of an 80's hair metal band from Japan. Looked it up and stumbled upon all female metal bands from Japan in the last decade or so and... Band-Maid is phenomenal. Their bassist and drummer, on initial impression, are off the charts talented. The whole band is good but those 2 really stand out

Navigators were so familiar with the currents and swell patterns in the Pacific, as well as wave refraction and reflection that they could tell when a swell had been affected by an island hundreds of miles off, giving them an idea of where they were on their journey in the middle of an ocean, hundreds of miles from land.
It may have been initially, but it eventually became a rather regular trip for mariners to visit the various island nations around the Pacific. I think the average trip for Hawaii to Tahiti and back was something like three months around that time so all the different cultures could stay in contact and share information/supplies/stories/etc.
One of my favorite stories from the Pacific is the cautionary tale of resource management on Easter Island, which was shared across the Pacific and resulted in improved sustainable practices across the various island nations.
