Also I've noticed the more competitive the tournament the worse parents are. The local league games are fairly laid back. District all-stars, a little more vocal. We never had issues with districts so it was fairly laid back. State was a little more competitive. The 9-year old tournament our fans got into it with another league in our city we had history with. The tournament director threatened to toss out all fans for this game.
Every year Regionals was even more vocal. On umps with every bad call. And we would frequently see the same umps for the state tournaments. The head umpire in charge was the same for a couple of the regionals we were at. He did a really good job.
Sometimes when I'd attend a game as a parent/nonref, other parents would actually encourage me to yell at the refs. I explained to one father why I thought he was incorrect. Next season I found that he had become a voluteer referee himself.

Also starting an eight week home weight lifting plan that my wife is currently on week four of. First time I've done one of these with the intention on sticking with it to the end. Looking to drop 15-20lbs and I have never sincerely incorporated weights into my workout plan since college. We'll see how it goes.
I added a loop around Roosevelt Island to my run this morning. Glad I did because I happened across a snapping turtle laying its eggs on the side of one of the trails. Cool to see.
Rode the 62km Tour de France Criterium on Sunday - shouldn't have had my Strava and Garmin on when I leisurely rode over from the hotel. I think I averaged around 28kph without adding in the morning leisure ride over, but Strava says I averaged 25 for the 62kph
There was a much younger guy in a full Cal Triathlon kit, I gave him a Go Bears! at the finish line where I saw him again, and then posted his photo on IG and Facebook tagging Cal Tri.
When I was in elementary school we had to go to the Keukenhof ( https://keukenhof.nl/en/ ) and I remember being a bit miffed about being dragged to such a tourist cliche because even then I was a little ray of sunshine. Now I'd probably enjoy a visit. One of the early signs of spring was tour buses, full of German tourists, with tulips strung across the front.
I took a picture there of a windmill which must be a favorite tourist photo spot, because my daughter went there several years later and coincidentally took exactly the same picture.
ha! well, if there's a Dutch beach fancy enough to have beach chairs already out, we never went there. But the German tourists always had the most elaborate setups for wind management - windbreaks, trenches, you name it. Basically they got to the north sea and started digging in, old habits die hard etc.
a great alternative to the Teton NP. in fact, i have never scene better mountain scenery and tall granite spires anywhere better than the Cirque of the Towers.

I love those things! If I could do it all over again, I would get one of those cargo/kid hauler bikes, maybe the big dorky two-wheels-in-front tricycle kind. By the time I got hip to that, we already had the little bike trailer, and then those darn kids just grow so fast. Those tricycle bikes can haul a lot of groceries after the kids out grow them. When you start to get old and doddering, you can still keep cranking them without worrying about balance issues.
well, the town is small enough, and built out with enough bike paths that you can reasonably do a lot of your trips with a bike. There was an estimate a few years ago that something like 25% of all trips in town were done by bike.

i need 2 on many occasions. one just to boil a bunch of pasta and the other to make up a pot of tomato based sauce.
it is not entirely clear why i pick the copper or enameled one for various cooking activities. i have some strange notion that risotto cooks better in the enamel and pasta sauces simmer better in the copper one.
I just bought one to cook sourdough bread. My BIL brought back a sourdough starter from China I think and gave me some. Mine is a Cuisinart enamel cast iron dutch oven. Heavy as shit but super nice.
I also have the baking/lasagna pan version that has higher walls than usual that I bought for making Lasagna. I found the lasagna was higher than my regular Pyrex glass ones.

Yes. My friend wanted to try to shuck her own oysters, but we convinced her it was too risky, so we ate at the Hog Island cafe instead. There was also another oyster place we passed by that looked popular.
If you can shuck oysters, the go to move at Hog Island is to reserve a table which comes equipped with a charcoal grill nearby, and to buy and shuck your own oysters, then BBQ them. Or raw.
Used up my jar of fermented garlic ginger paste and made roasted garlic ginger chicken thighs. Roasting differently marinated chicken in my cast iron is now like 35% of my meals.

There have been innovations since the last time I went to the doctor (maybe 2 years ago)!
1) She asked if I wanted to be weighed, rather than that being expected, which is cool.
2) When I said sure, she had me get on the table. The table was a scale!!! How cool is that?
My mom informed me of the optional weigh-in a year or two ago and I think I've only weighed in once since then.

I know I am going to shock you all when I tell you I've never seen an Austin Powers movie.
They were written as a satire of the campy british spy stuff of the sixties, but ended up actually being british spy stuff of the sixties.

I don't know if I should be proud or ashamed of the fact that my 12-year-old son really liked the first two Austin Powers movies.

Will Ferrell's bit where he gets dropped into the fire pit but just keeps on talking cracks me up.

One thing I recall about Pt. Reyes is that they were not big on public restrooms, to put it nicely. Cowgirl Creamery was cool though. Besides dairy, had a lot of knicknacks and things.

Yes. My friend wanted to try to shuck her own oysters, but we convinced her it was too risky, so we ate at the Hog Island cafe instead. There was also another oyster place we passed by that looked popular.
If you can shuck oysters, the go to move at Hog Island is to reserve a table which comes equipped with a charcoal grill nearby, and to buy and shuck your own oysters, then BBQ them. Or raw.

was texting with a college friend last night who lost his uncle to Covid - apparently a couple of the uncle's friends got sick, and then 2 weeks later the uncle was dead. Just never got round to getting vaccinated (wasn't politically opposed or anything). This friend lost his dad to brain tumors in late '18, his brother to cancer last November, and his mother is increasingly in the grip of dementia... so he's been having a wild time but in a bad way :(

I'm always in a weird position as a Lakers fan. On one hand, I have to say they are my favorite NBA team. On the other, I find the Jeanie Buss ownership regime really campy in their marketing and also in their refusal to accept advanced analytics. You can't really say the Lebron experiment failed, but it certainly isn't a recipe for long-term success.
Had the Lakers not been so injured late this season, I'm sure they would be in the Western Conference finals.

I really like Alex Wood. I think he’s awesome. I’m happy he’s on the San Francisco Giants, a team I watch roughly 162 times a year due to ample doses of emotional attachment and employer obligations.
You probably weren’t expecting me to start a recap for a game that the Giants lost 8-1, in which Wood saw his ERA balloon by more than a full point, with those words.
But it’s true, and I was reminded of it on Tuesday, even as Wood allowed 7 earned runs and failed to make it out of the fourth inning.
Nah. The disaster was at the top of the third inning, continuing into the 4th. Wood lost command of his bread-and-butter slider. And it wasn't like he wasn't getting calls on the corners. He was off. And then he got in his head and he became really wild - missing the plate by a mile.

- Betts hit a ball to deep LF with runners on 1st and 2nd and 2 outs and probably would've scored Bellinger from 1st but the LF took a great line to the ball and made a running catch at the fence. Just hit it off the end of the bat. No 1 and I thought it was gone off the bat.
