Do any of you have suggestions or thoughts on blow torches for an amateur to use in a home kitchen? Water2Table sometimes has sashimi-grade halibut, which I LOVE seared (but not fully raw), so I feel like it might be time to look into blow torches. Also, I would prefer not to make my kitchen explode or set it on fire.

The type used for soldering copper pipes would work, any hardware store would have it, get a wide tip, and the higher heat fuel + plus a sparker to start it.

my coworker uses something similar to this for the kitchen. A kitchen butane torch for things like quick searing after sous vide.

That's probably better, my idea would work, but be overkill.

the halibut would be well done in about 5 seconds.

Both can be used in non-culinary settings as well... for those times when you really need something answered.

Olivia de Havilland played across from Errol Flynn in the 1935 classic Captain Blood when they were unknown actors. They were again together in 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood. de Haviland was later in Gone with the Wind in 1939. She's been nominated for 5 Academy awards, won a Golden Globe and a Daytime Emmy. Guess what? She is still alive and turned 104 today.

The rest of the tweets:

We encourage employees to wash their hands after using the bathroom, but understand that some people may be allergic to certain soaps or may simply prefer not to wash their hands. It is not our place to tell them what to do.

We understand that you may be used to chicken that has been cooked to 165 degrees. We do have to respect that some of our cooks may have seen a meme or a YouTube video saying that 100 degrees is sufficient, and we do not want to encroach on their beliefs.

Some of our cooks may prefer to use the same utensils for multiple ingredients, including ingredients some customers are allergic to. That is a cook’s right to do so.

Some servers may wish to touch your food as they serve it. There is no reason that a healthy person with clean hands can’t touch your food. We will take their word for it that they are healthy and clean.

Water temperature and detergent are highly personal choices, and we allow our dishwashing team to decide how they’d prefer to wash the silverware you will put in your mouth.

Some of you may get sick, but almost everyone survives food poisoning. We think you’ll agree that it’s a small price to pay for the sweet freedom of no one ever being told what to do - and especially not for the silly reason of keeping strangers healthy.

Avoiding Florida altogether is an incredibly sharp approach...Newellbany and I crossed Marlins Park and the Trop off our ballpark list with a trip in '14, and I don't plan on making another extended visit. I am sneaking through the NW tip for lunch in Pensacola on the C2C, though, just to cross it off the pup's state bucket list.

Chances of this happening are approaching "near certainty" status.

Every four years or so, I teach in the summer at Hollins in Roanoke. I get a lot of time traveling through the Blue Ridge mountains and the Shenandoah. My great great great grandfather, Anthony Jones, was in the US Colored Ninth Cav during the Civil War. I imagine myself having been transferred to Sheridan's army and burning everything in site. That would have been fun.

"The GOP primary in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District was more of a surprise, however, with President Trump’s backed candidate Rep. Scott Tipton losing to restauranteur Lauren Boebert by about 9 points, 54.6 percent to 45.4 percent. Tipton is now the fourth House incumbent to lose renomination this year,1 and his defeat could make this Republican-leaning seat — Trump won it by 12 points in 2016, according to Daily Kos Elections — highly competitive in November. Boebert ran to the right of Tipton, drawing on her background as a gun-rights activist (she runs a restaurant where servers are allowed to openly carry firearms). But she’s raised very little money so far, and has attracted controversy for her views on QAnon, a far-right movement labeled a domestic terrorist threat by the FBI last year that promotes false conspiracy theories. So Boebert may struggle to turn her upset primary victory into real traction in the general election. Democrats have nominated former state Rep. Diane Mitsch Bush, hoping she can win after losing to Tipton by 8 points in 2018."

Sounds better than the way SGBear reported the results yesterday.

I interviewed for a Sourcing position at Cal back in 2011 if I remember right. Didnt get the job because of what looked like internal politics but I remember being shocked at how inefficient and wasteful the University's spending was. I figured it was dicey but the real scope of it, just from the little I saw, blew my mind. In the end, dodged a bullet I think, being at EA has been much more successful and lucrative.

Expand full comment

this is mind boggling incompetence if true. While it is likely still legally binding due to both parties "acting" as if the contract was executed, it opens a gaping loophole that Under Armour may be able to exploit. Regardless (and not that surprising I suppose), this is a very bad look for Cal.
