A few times. I painted my face for the Cal/Miami game (the one where Russell White ran back a kickoff for a TD). Never again to a football game. I had poor discipline to avoid touching my face.

And another time in HK, someone had a "devils and angels" themed birthday party at Joe Banana's. I bought a black body suit, had plastic horns & pitchfork, slicked my hair back, and painted everything else red. I woke up the next morning not remembering how I got home, butt nekked save for one sock, some body paint, and cake frosting in my ear.

When I lived on Russian Hill we had a few guys of no fixed address who were a part of the daily neighborhood fabric. If I went in to pick up takeout from one of the local restaurants and one of them was there, I would generally ask if he wanted anything and get it for him. They almost always did, and it was always a super reasonable request.

When I lived at Bay & Hyde, I brought House of Nanking leftovers home one night & a big homeless guy who would crash in Russian Hill Park was chilling and he asked for money. I said “No, but how about some Chinese food...I got House of Nanking?” His answer: “Man I can’t eat that shit!” Sigh...

No, though I have gotten more generous about giving them a few bucks when they ask for it. I figure, what skin is it off my nose if they're scamming me? If they're not then maybe I really helped them that day.

My dad did offer to buy a homeless guy a meal a few times when I was with him as a kid. He'd say, no, I won't give you money, but if we go into this restaurant you can order something and I'll pay for it.

I go through the local business district at least a couple times a day so know most of the homeless folks. I used to talk with one guy almost everyday until he got into a subsidized apartment. When I would get a coupon to TGIF I used to take him to lunch. During the virus I've bought one guy a couple slices and something to drink at the local pizza place and recently bought a rotisserie chicken and some soda for a couple guys I know who were panhandling outside Safeway.

I'd like your feedback as far as different 15 minute topics we can talk about (eg, good food, how to find "your people", how to expand outside "your people", safety in a small city with big city challenges, diversity, getting used to not being the smartest kid in the class). Thoughts?

Despite the fact that Texas is one of the hot spots, and approaching IC bed capacity, the University of Texas still plans to have 50% of capacity for all home football games.

Even assuming they can test and isolate and keep players positives down, its hard to see how even with masks this density for as diverse a group as a football crowd is not going to be a problem anywhere, much less in a community with a high number of positives.

And though its initially less significant than safety, its difficult to see how there won't be legally challengeable issues with access priorities if some people are denied access while others are rewarded.

I might be overly pessimistic, but current and historic events don't inspire confidence in me that Texas will optimize this situation.

CIF recommended delaying fall sports until the spring. Football would be over by middle of April, Basketball would be over by mid May I think, and then baseball would be over by June. Will be interesting to see how many seniors that have committed will play. I heard from No 3's travel ball coach that college baseball will end up recruiting late into the school year. Will be interesting to see what happens to dual/tri sport athletes.

I think some of the messaging in LA has been bad. Like, what kind of message did it send to close beaches for 4th of July? IMO that just drives people to socialize in more dangerous ways, because at that point they figure it doesn't matter what they do.

I've been following Zeynep Tufekci lately, and I think she's on to something. The newsmedia's weird focus on beach pictures in COVID stories has had a negative effect.

Opt-in for online school for our county closed yesterday. Final tally: 50% opted into online school. The rest will have 1 week in person, 2 weeks online. It's a very blue county, so I found this interesting. I suspect that if it was opt-out, it would have been much more because the window was only open for 7 days.

Our schools are “fine tuning” their proposed approach but they have said that school will be online only to start the semester not least because we’re 2 weeks out from a decision from the state about whether schools will even be allowed to open for in-person instruction

AndyPanda's avatar

A lot of schools in the area don't have the capacity to come close to social distance anything, but don't want to be the first in line to go on-line only, which they are also not equipped to do well, so there is a lot of hoping higher and wider events make the decision for them.

Ex's MIL had a fever a couple of nights ago, She didn't have the no smell/taste which usually is the first indication and the small cough she had isn't any different than she usually has. Smart people of the DBD: Do we have virus, bacteria, fungus and other pathogens in our body already that are just waiting for us to get weak in order to propagate or is it mostly from external sources?

Expand full comment
TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

A yeast infection is generally not "outside" yeast; it's that conditions have allowed the exiting population to outgrow the other microbes. Same with a staph infection--we normally have a lot of different bacteria on our skin, but if it gets out of balance, that's when problems arise. So, it's not just if we, the host, get weak. It could also be because the other microbes have gotten weak.

Expand full comment
WolverBear's avatar

Yes. Herpes and chicken pox are both viruses that are hypothesized to remain latent in nervous system cells with notable re-occurrences (i.e. cold sores, shingles). We have bacteria all over all the time, though usually the detrimental ones aren't present in sufficient number in the susceptible places for us to notice. That said, I would wager the most commonly occurring stuff usually comes from external contact, so wash your hands, avoid leaking sick people, practice food safety.
