A friend of mine is responsible for teaching the "How to Teach Online" sessions at her college. One professor asked if he could have his students correspond by fax, because he didn't use email.
My father in law, now a retired professor, had not used an ATM as of... at least 2003 and possibly 2006. I’m not entirely convinced he has used one in the intervening years.
I hang out in casual clothes now. Sweat shorts in the summer until I can remember to put on some proper cargo shorts and then t-shirts pretty much every day all day. I almost never buy t-shirts, because my closet is full of them and freebies come into my life frequently enough where there's no need to buy anything new with the sole exception of a Gus' Fried Chicken t-shirt from the Ole Miss game.
It's been half a year and I'm now starting to notice that t-shirts, which happily hung out in my closet for years without much sign of wear, are now buckling under the strain of constant wear. Several thrown out and many on their way out.
So, for the first time in seemingly a long time, I am proactively buying t-shirts again. First purchase, a Top Dog shirt. I wonder what I'll buy next.
I've got what is the perfect for me Berkeley t-shirt. I'm a thin guy and have been a runner for forty years. The shirt shows two skeletons side-by-side in mid stride wearing running shorts and shoes. Across the top it says Fountain of Youth and below in larger font Berkeley. Can't remember who, but a family member picked it up for me years ago on Telegraph.
I usually wear a hoodie when I'm working at home, which is almost always nowadays. Have a home office. For client meetings - grey or black turtleneck and a blazer.
I might have to get No 2 some of these. He likes Ts like "There are only 10 people in the world: those that understand binary and those that dont.", or "There are two types of people: 1) Those that cannot extrapolate from incomplete data".
I used to wear buttoned, collared shirts for work. I'm only on-site for half-days thanks to covid, so I stopped wearing them to work since it didn't feel worth the work to iron them... Now I have no idea how I'll switch back when things go back to normal.
When I was a kid, the Faroes existed to me only as part of the shipping forecast. They briefly became synonymous with the pain of supporting the Scottish National team when a team of school teachers and fishermen beat Scotland. Now I’d like to be a cliche and go to take pictures. I’ve got this notion that what I want to do is take the ferry from Denmark to the Faroes and then on to Iceland... because I have 3 weeks to spare for this idea 🙄
Your cliche idea sounds more attainable than my tour of the South Pacific. Fly to Hawaii, sail to Midway, Wake, Saipan, Guadalcanal, maybe end up in Australia?
At noon (PDT), the B1G cancelled all fall sports, with the intention to try to play in the spring if conditions improve. 1 hour later, the Pac-12 cancelled all athletic competitions until at least Jan. 1, 2021. The Pac-12 will explore possibilities for playing each sport in some fashion at some point in the winter and spring as the situation evolves and permits.
lets see if they keep saying this with the covid heart condition now making the rounds. I think that will kill the season, no school wants the liability of players potentially dying because they got Covid while playing and developed myocarditis
Meanwhile, in Atlanta, another high school has to close after being open a week, with 14 positives, 15 more suspected cases pending, and 294 students and staff quarantined so far (which will increase dramatically if any of those 15 are positive).
The dumpster fire continues. We are luckily down to about 160 new cases in the last two weeks in the county. The state guidance for opening up more is less than 25 new cases in the last 14 days per 100,000 population. which means we need to get down to about 55 cases/14 days (so 1/3 of current) to have the spread 'under control enough' in the county.
Boo Kamala. I went to get some fish at a Whole Foods in DC. As I got off the bus I saw a crowd and went to see what was going on. A bunch of news crews had set up outside her apartment. Nothing had happened by time I had shopped and was headed back. I sat and read for awhile but she never showed up, thus the boo. Hopefully she came out at some point and greeted the crowd but didn't want my fish to go bad.
Madison Bumgarner goes on IL. For those not paying attention, he is 0-3 in 4 appearances with 17.1 innings and a tidy 9.35 ERA. He is serving up career-high rates in home-runs, walks, and hits while also striking out batters at a career-low rate.
First year of a 5 year, 85 million dollar contract for the D-Backs.
I instinctively booed Cal Quantrill when I saw him pitch in a Fall Instructional League (not to be confused with Arizona Fall League) game at the home of the Angels in Tempe. It was the day after seeing Cal lose to ASU in Football on a September day a few years ago. The only slight complication was that the only fans inside that ballpark were me and my Uber driver (who I convinced to check this out for a bit), so Cal (and other random players and coaches including USC alum Mark Prior who was coaching the Padres team) turned around and saw me in my Cal cap (I only packed Cal stuff for the extended weekend Cal Football trip). It was kind of awkward.
By the way, after my Uber driver left, a random kid wearing a Cal track jacket showed up (he apparently had no real Cal affiliation and got that jacket from a cousin). The two of us got autographs from a sleepy Hideo Nomo who was there to scout the game.
No fans generally go to Instructional League games except that because Tebow was playing in Mets' Instructional League games in Florida, there were articles about fans going there to see him. That inspired me to spend my Monday afternoon at the ballpark to kill some time while my friend (who I was staying with) had to work.
The back is my current concern. It looks like it got hurt when he dove for the line drive. Hopefully it's not something that will be a long term thing like with Kershaw. But yeah, he is fragile. I wonder if the Dodgers will re-sign him after 2022. I guess it all depends on if Lux has fixed his throwing issues and can move to SS.
oohhh....yes! good for MLB. Though how can Kelly get 8 and Laureano only gets 6? Granted Laureano didn't charge until he was egged on, but still. Wheel of suspension!
Astros beat Giants 6-4 as McCullers blanking through 7 and a six-run lead holds up against a furious final two innings. Belt is struggling at the plate. If he sets a new benchmark for batting futility, so be it, just so we can talk about being above/below the "Belt Line".
Lamorinda/Campo news
apparently much-reviled Spanish teacher, Danielli, retired due to coronavirus
That name seems like a roller coaster to try to pronounce in Spanish.
Looks Italian to me.
As we learned from yesterday's DBD, it means more than one Daniello.
what's weird is the ll wasn't pronounced in a Spanish way, at least I don't remember it being pronounced that way.
It looks Italian
Agreed, but since it was a Spanish teacher, I thought it was funny to try to pronounce in Spanish.
that's true. Maybe she is. I guess I never noticed.
It's an unusual spelling for Italian (but not impossible). Common spelling would be Danieli.
Perhaps an Ellis Island edit
oh wow...interesting. She must be pushing 80. I wouldn't blame her. I can't imagine her teaching online.
A friend of mine is responsible for teaching the "How to Teach Online" sessions at her college. One professor asked if he could have his students correspond by fax, because he didn't use email.
Shhhh no one tell imax about NLI Day.
Lordy
My father in law, now a retired professor, had not used an ATM as of... at least 2003 and possibly 2006. I’m not entirely convinced he has used one in the intervening years.
I have a friend who graduated from Cal in '74 who has never used an ATM.
Well that’s how the Man keeps tabs on you
In fairness, he wrote his dissertation on a mainframe in the mid 70s, so it’s selective

I want to get/make myself a tie dye Berkeley shirt.
I've got what is the perfect for me Berkeley t-shirt. I'm a thin guy and have been a runner for forty years. The shirt shows two skeletons side-by-side in mid stride wearing running shorts and shoes. Maybe one that just says "Berk." because I like British profanity
Well, berk is rhyming slang for cunt, so maybe avoid that?
How does that work?
Berkshire Hunt = cunt, shortened to Berk
Ah, hunt was the missing word. Thanks for doing the needful.
Oh, those Brits
Wise council.
Oh, I know!
BTW, Gus has apparently been busy expanding locations, and there are now several in California, including downtown Oakland: http://gusfriedchicken.com/oakland-california-location/
That's right down the street from the Nashville Hot Chicken place, World Famous HotBoys chicken. Right where San Pablo ends.
Oh that's the place in Memphis we went to. I'll have to take the boys there.
i need a couple top dog shirts too
I usually wear a hoodie when I'm working at home, which is almost always nowadays. Have a home office. For client meetings - grey or black turtleneck and a blazer.
It's too hot for hoodies at home, but I definitely kept a spare sweater in my office for the summer months when they cranked up the AC
May I suggest Homage? Their t-shirts are SO soft https://www.homage.com/
i agree. homage shirts are good. dont they have a particularly large collection of OSU stuff?
Yes, they're from Columbus
Way back when Homage had a couple of Cal shirts. Now they seem to mostly be midwest are shirts.
I've been getting a few silly ones from https://www.snorgtees.com/
You can also try https://6dollarshirts.com for funny ones
oh they have a Houston Asterisks one. Would only be better if it was "Assterisks"
https://6dollarshirts.com/houston-asterisks
I might have to get No 2 some of these. He likes Ts like "There are only 10 people in the world: those that understand binary and those that dont.", or "There are two types of people: 1) Those that cannot extrapolate from incomplete data".
"The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself. and spiders"
Spiders can be a serious concern!
that would be perfect for him. He is frightened of spiders.
Ha, a bunch of those made me chuckle
I get a chuckle every time out of the "Alderan 5 day forecast".
I prefer collard shirts for work. both polo's and button up. we are fairly casual, i may not even own a white long sleeve button up shirt any longer.
I have a white shirt just to be prepared for key roles in weddings and funerals, and the like. I expect it will out-last my lifetime.
I had a couple, but my shape has changed a bit since they fit last...
sweet jeezus 'collared'.
Don't beat yourself up. It's all gravy.
Maybe he just prefers a particular shade of dark green...
I prefer collared shirts - even if it’s just a polo - but have occasionally been wearing tshirts in the New Informality.
I used to wear buttoned, collared shirts for work. I'm only on-site for half-days thanks to covid, so I stopped wearing them to work since it didn't feel worth the work to iron them... Now I have no idea how I'll switch back when things go back to normal.

Faroe Islands
Not to be confused with farro, pharoah, Faro, or faro
Or Mia Farrow
Or Farore, if you're a Zelda nerd.
In other words, Faroe football's purpose is teleology
Your cliche idea sounds more attainable than my tour of the South Pacific. Fly to Hawaii, sail to Midway, Wake, Saipan, Guadalcanal, maybe end up in Australia?
It’s only one of my many cliche travel ideas, all I need is a lottery win and early retirement
Don't we all...
maybe you can get Cruzin to lead it.
That itinerary sounds more it would be like your grandfather's tour of the South Pacific in the 1940s 😛
uh...
Sorry... father's? I forget how old you are sometimes haha.
Oh hardy har har. I need a "that's the point" gif.
That's a cool photo, those are some serious cliffs.
I love the roof greenery!

Pac-12 officially pulling the plug on 2020 football, hoping the situation improves for the spring.
It's the right move.
Seems like just about everyone in sports media knew this was coming, that it was only a matter of time before the big conferences pulled the plug.
Big 10/14 just announced they are postponing football to spring. I expect the Pac 12 to announce they will do the same.
Helton just got some additional job security and has postponed his Alabama beat down.
UMass (Independent) has cancelled football season.

(Watchstadium.com): Mountain West football season cancelled (rumor)

Per Scott Frost, Nebraska wants to play regardless of what Big 10 says.
[Big10 lawyers] (Nervous laughter)

Scott might be one of the handful of coaches who will maintain better job security by NOT playing this season.
Good luck with that, Coach.
Harbaugh is saying the same thing at Michigan.
Harbaugh needs outside guidance I suspect
There's been previous evidence that suggests that as well.
lets see if they keep saying this with the covid heart condition now making the rounds. I think that will kill the season, no school wants the liability of players potentially dying because they got Covid while playing and developed myocarditis

OUR CRUMBLING DEMOCRACY
Biden's VP announcement expected today. Karen Bass told it's not her.
Kamala
If they win (I am NOT counting my chickens on this one) I will be extremely interested to see who Gavin taps to be Senator.
Hoping for Katie Porter, preparing for more disappointment.
Eric Swalwell wouldn't be the worst; actually there are a fair number of good choices.
I'd say the top 5 is: 1. Porter 2. Bass 3. Schiff 4. Swalwell 5. Lieu I guess
Send Gav a note today with your availability to ride out the rest of the seat....
I can't afford the pay cut.
You're forgetting about the bribes.
Confirmed: Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris' father (UC Berkeley, PhD Economics) and late mother (UC Berkeley, PhD Endocrinology). Kamala was born in Oakland, raised in Berkeley.

I (technically) worked for Kamala Harris as an intern at the SFDA. Technically, because obviously I worked directly for a Deputy DA, not the DA.
Also, how's everyone doing?
long time no talk. How's married life treating you?
Hello!
On our first day, she took the time to meet with the interns and also to speak with us individually. I'm excited about this pick.
No big surprise here.
Nope, but a solid choice.
I'm fine with it.
My niece has been a big Bernie person all along and she posted a positive note about the pick so that's encouraging.

I suspected he would not look so good when moving from a pitchers park to a hitters park, plus the expected age-related decline.
That said, if he's going on the DL it could also just be an injury problem.
The Jason Schmidt of the Dbacks
Dodgers fall 1-2 to Padres. Cal Quantrill ('furd alumnus) enters in the third inning, gets the win as the third of six pitchers.

ugh that was so bad. Muncy and Bellinger are missing center cut fastballs. Or just looking at them. Seager needs to get well fast.
I really like Seager, but damn he is so fragile.

:( bad day for baseball
Chapman's 6 RBIs in the game not enough as Trout wins it for the Angels.
Why pitch to the dude?!?!?!?
Good question.

who's that?
probs TE Latu
Which Latu? TE Cameron Latu comitted to Bama two years ago. He's a sophomore. Was a 4 star.

Thanks, I found him. Another 3 star, very tall but could put on a few pounds. Btw, today we moved up to #20 position on the 247 team recruiting list.
Go Bears!
