Most of the value of attending UCB undergrad (or any elite university, really) is due to their ability to attract and accumulate talent. The actual educational experience delivered is fine, but not markedly different from many other schools outside of the talent/potential level of your peers.
So the quality of instruction and lectures etc. is not that different, but what you get at the more elite institutions is student colleagues who will, on average, work faster and better. That's what you pay for at a place like MIT. By comparison, Cal is a tuition bargain.
Student colleagues matter- quality of discussion & co-learning, plus drive also matters. high yardsticks to measure up to generally drive more effort for tests, papers, etc. plus the star talent that actually teach undergrads- profs like Litwack, Romer, Jowitz, Diamond make memorable impacts. I went to UNC for grad school, took 2 joint undergrad/grad classes there- BIG difference in undergrad caliber.
Right, and I'm not sure how much impact the elite peer group has on learning. Do Cal students leave college better _educated_, or just better _connected_? Remember, these are all elite high school students, they were pretty much always going to perform well academically no matter what Cal did or didn't do.
I would agree that alot of the elite HS and colleges are all about connections and the University name on the paper. I'm sure connections is something that elite schools push. Need a job, I'm sure we have an alum that works in that field and can give you a chance.
and if you're interested in getting involved with research, it's really only a good fit if you find faculty who actually work effectively with undergrads, and don't pawn you off on a postdoc*
Remember the QB grad assistant at South Carolina who ended up joining the team because their starter sprained his ankle badly, the backup QB got sick and lost 20 pounds, leaving only a freshman as the only scholarship player at QB? Well, he's starting game 1 vs. Eastern Illinois. He has attempted 290 passes and completed 47.2% with 12 TDs and 8 INTs through 3 seasons as a backup at ISU and NDSU.
Ucla needs to build a new stadium, I know land is expensive but it doesn’t need to be very big, just a nice 35,000 seat stadium or play in Carson who the Chargers and SDSU played their games.
Lastly, if they insist on an off campus stadium they should just play in San Diego at the new SDSU football stadium that is being built.
playing in Carson wouldn't be unreasonable. I think building a new stadium doesn't really make sense given how little land is available near their campus
IMG Academy - arguably the best HS football program in America - played Bishop Sycamore HS (Columbus OH) on ESPN. Bishop Sycamore (OH) has the fourth hardest schedule in America according to Maxpreps with their tilts against #1 IMG (FL), #10 St. Frances Academy (MD), #15 Duncanville (TX), #33 DeMatha (MD), and #83 Archbishop Hoban (OH).
Sycamore lost to IMG 58-0 and looked bad doing it. And then the Sycamore's story started unravelling. They only had 30 something players. They were sharing helmets. They played 3 games in 3 days. Bishop Sycamore claimed to have a bunch of D1 recruits, but nobody ever showed up on any recruiting databases.
So people started digging. There is no Bishop Sycamore High School. The players are adults - not high school kids. Their coach is a felon with an outstanding warrant. [BH90210 theme starts playing].
Obviously the fraud that is Bishop Sycamore is the big story here, but they're also a symptom of a larger ecosystem, where there's so much attention/promotion of high school programs that this sort of fraud would even be worth perpetrating.
Honestly, the idea of a "national high school football powerhouse" just shouldn't exist.
I was always skeptical of Weaver's chances in the NFL. I didn't think he had the speed to keep up against NFL passing games (by the end of his time at Cal he was already being taken off the field in obvious passing situations).
While not the fastest guy, Weav made up for it with football smarts and anticipation, plus he's very tough. Maybe he goes to WFT and Rivera? But then again they cut Jordan K today. Also, Laird made the Dolphins 53 man roster.
Robert Paylor did it again on Sunday, inspiring a large group of people, most of whom don’t even know him.
Left a quadriplegic after suffering a spinal cord injury on May 6, 2017 while playing for the Cal rugby team, Paylor was not supposed to walk again. Doctors weren’t sure he would live.
But his astonishing road back has touched those close to him and countless others across the globe.
“He is an inspiration to me every day,” said his mother, Debbie Paylor.
The New England Patriots are releasing veteran Cam Newton and rookie Mac Jones will be the starter after the two battled for the quarterback job since training camp, ESPN has confirmed.
Newton started on Sunday and played two series, all with the starters. Jones, who was the 15th overall pick out of Alabama, relieved him and played deep into the third quarter, all with the backups.
Newton, who was 2-of-5 for 10 yards with one interception on Sunday, was not made available to answer questions after the game. He hasn't addressed reporters since the COVID-19 protocol "misunderstanding" that led him to miss three practices last week.
It was a thriller on Monday night, as the Dodgers pulled out the 5-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves. With the victory, the Dodgers are now 1.5 games out of first place in the NL West.
Things got very interesting late in the game, starting in the eighth inning. I’m going to do my best to explain this as best as I can, so take it easy on me. Okay so Ozzie Albies singled with one out, bringing the tying run to the plate in Jorge Soler. On a 1-1 pitch, Soler swung and missed, but hit catcher Will Smith on the follow through.
Soler was ruled out because of interference, making it two outs. However, the umpires said Albies was also out, and it was a double play.... wait what? After about five minutes of confusion, Albies returned back to first base and there were two outs.
Giants lose 3-1 to the Milwaukee Brewers in a competitive game that was upstaged by the news that Cueto and Wood would be going to the COVID IL in late scratches. Each team hit the ball hard around the park while each team also made amazing defensive plays. The Giants had one big chance in the 8th where they got caught out at 2nd base and Yazstremski missed 1st base while trying to avoid a tag in the 9th. I was also in attendance at the game where attendance was about 70% full and I must the security was pretty bad I practically walked in untouched.
Sometimes the Giants face good pitchers. Sometimes the Giants face great pitchers. Sometimes the Giants face pitchers that have 5.9 fWAR through August with a 1.64 xFIP going into the game, and sometimes those pitchers have 99mph four seamers, 95mph cutters, and a plus curveball, plus changeup, and a plus slider, and they carve up the Giants lineup like a Thanksgiving turkey through six innings. But there’s a reason baseball games are nine innings, and it’s not so MLB can sell more peanuts (although that might be part of it) — the reason is because you can drive even the best pitcher out of the game eventually and get to the bullpen. The Giants did just that in the bottom of the seventh, eventually chasing Corbin Burnes on the heels of a Brandon Belt double and Kris Bryant single. Belt would come around to score on a Crawford single. So take that, Corbin Burnes, ye of the 2.30 ERA. You can fool the Giants once - twice - well, up to six innings - but you can’t survive seven!*
*Overall, the Milwaukee Brewers did survive, beating the San Francisco Giants 3-1
The real story of this game, though, was the amount of quality at-bats the Giants put on the board with nothing to show for it (and, on the flipside, the lackluster at-bats they had when there were runners on the bases). Here are some balls the Giants hit throughout the game and their xBAs. See if you can guess the outcomes:

The English have English breakfast. What elements would be on your breakfast plate? Kicker: pick as if you must be able to eat it once a week for a decade.
HK Breakfast (for me - the general one would be macaroni in chicken broth)
HK Style scrambled eggs on the softest whitest bread.
That.... doesn't sound exciting at all.
That indicates to me that you have never had it.
Hawaiian breakfast: loco moco.
2 Eggs over easy, chorizo sausage, salsa, 2 slices of whole wheat toast (buttered and racked), cup of fresh fruit salad, pot of coffee.
https://twitter.com/LucyKwords/status/1414976915128082439?s=20
But also, I got McDonald's breakfast this morning (egg and cheese biscuit, hashbrown) nomnomnom
I get the sausage and egg McMuffin and a hash brown wedge on average once a week. And look forward to it.
Oh, I know: Cowboy hash. A fry-up of bacon, onions, bell peppers, marble potatoes, covered with cheese, served with salsa & crema.
All of the above answers are correct (mostly because I love breakfast foods), but this answer is especially correct.

Seriously, Carson? Why not in Exposition Park? That would be hella funny.
that's closer geographically but a much more terrible stadium right?

I just realized that Carson isn't where SoFi Stadium is

I didn't watch the game but had the TV on as I was getting ready to go out and was struck by how few people were there just before opening kick-off.
Only some folks were wearing masks, though many did practice social distancing...
Just IMO, but . . . I don't think you need masks for an outdoor event where people are spread out like that.
😂 Covid was no match for a ucla game.
Indeed. Though in fairness to them, the Rose Bowl is a MASSIVE stadium, so even a crowd of 20k or so will look really sparse.
