Food trucks at Memorial. Started a couple of years ago. Definitely an upgrade to the food offered at the kiosks around the stadium. Though I have had the peroshkis on occasion from the East side walkway.

I've had the chicken strips, Ok if uninspired. One time I got garlic fries (Big Game, 2018) and they gave me 2 pounds of fries or enough for a whole family. Plus it was raining and we lost to Furd.

My iPhone X is now out of warranty. It’s working fine so I wasn’t planning to replace it, but then I saw various (well sourced) rumors that Apple might be fiddling with battery design to accommodate 5G hardware and that nobody is sure how they’re going to implement 5G (regionally, by model, etc) and now I’m thinking about just buying a current model rather than waiting a year so that I’m not part of the usual “customer as beta tester” mayhem

Expand full comment
TheBuckeyeBear's avatar

I wouldn't say my iPhone 6 is still going STRONG, but...well, I'm still using it, and it's not like I'm going anywhere these days, so battery life is less important. I was thisclose to getting the iPhone SE because:

1) it's not smaller, but at least it's not larger

2) it's cheaper than the other ones

3) presumably it's still nicer than my 6

But my dad convinced me to wait until 5G, and again, I'm not going anywhere.

Expand full comment
DC Trojan's avatar

The only real downside of a 6 is it’s no longer covered by iOS updates - eventually that will affect your apps. But not immediately. And as you say, most of us aren’t going anywhere

Not proud to admit, but there was a 2-year stretch late in the Tedford-era where I went through a phone a season...kind of like when he slammed the clipboard after the Kevin Riley/OSU clock debacle. I specifically remember needing to replace a late-2000's model Samsung Galaxy following our UNR debacle on national tv in Reno v. Kaepernick...it's better now that I've given up all hope of the Rose and Sun Bowls in my lifetime and set my sights on the Alamo...

Expand full comment
Scootie's avatar

Last year it somehow ended up on the side of the road and the glass back spidered, and there is a crack and some pixel damage on the front. It gradually has expanded over the course of the year. I doubt a case would have saved it, but regardless, no.

Just got a Google 4XL in May. Now they have come out with the Pixel 4a, can't ever catch up with the technology curve.

Expand full comment
heyalumnigo's avatar

Usually the Pixel "a" devices are lower cost devices but they have the same great camera. For example my Pixel 3 has a metal case with a faster processor than the 3a I got No 2. They both have the same camera so I imagine I'd be fine with the 3a. The 3a was probably half the cost of the Pixel 3. It isn't like the iPhone 's' versions that usually were faster in the same form factor.

i was thinking of getting a Pixel phone since i have the Google Fi plan and only a few phones can really take advantage of the network switching thing.

not sure if i should wait for 5G version, or even the Pixel 5 later this year. i am perfectly happy w/ my Galaxy 9.

Expand full comment
heyalumnigo's avatar

I love my Pixel phone, partly because of the vanilla Android that is on it. I hate the other phones where the manufacturer puts on their own apps that I don't want. You get immediate updates to Android. I've had 4 Google phones now. Nexus 4, Nexus 5, 5x, and Pixel 3.

The only thing you miss out on, sometimes, is being able to see the phone. I guess starting with Pixel 2, Google has partnered with service providers like Verizon and TMobile.

I would think about google fi, but the way my kids use data, it would probably cost more. Tmobile has the free MLB at bat as well as free streaming for some apps.

I was explaining to my kids that living in Northern Europe in the 70s it was not unusual to find people who didn’t think that Italians or Spaniards were genuinely white, and then when they were appalled by that pointed out that you can find northern Italians who still think that about southern Italians. Tricky thing, trying to nail down bigotry.

Tibetians, Kazakhs and Ughyurs definitely look different than Han (and they're the most mistreated). Hui, Manchu, Zhuang, Miao, even Koreans and the other 50 some officially recognized minorities are mainly indistinguishable from Han.

the point is that racism is based on surface level issues, not cultural issues. Hui (who are also muslims and behave pretty much like ughyurs) are not being rounded up for re-education - so the chinese arguments that the Uyghurs are being rounded up for being muslim separatists fall flat.

It sounds to me at most just like a rationalization of his approach of doing absolutely fucking nothing about the virus except pretend the pandemic is over, and let's call that the "herd immunity" approach. But *actual* herd immunity isn't going to happen in time for the election, and if we actually did go back to normal life there would be a ton of mass sickness and death in the meantime, which... would kill his election chances. So this is pretty much just bullshit, right?
