Yeah, I thought it was settled that DBD wouldn’t be behind a paywall. It looks like they changed that decision, which is fine but it would have been nice to have some sort of warning that the decision was changed.
After a relatively "not hot" summer - the hottest it's been has been like 36 (96) - we hit like 3 days in a row of 38 (100!). It's been alternating giant downpours with surface of the sun. And yet, its still better than that summer when we had 2 weeks over 40.
It's been overcast with random, very light rain in LA the past few days, a nice change from the heat of last week. The rare tropical storm/depression in the Sea of Cortez made it all the way north and bumped up our humidity. Now going on five "rainy" days this summer and a heavy marine layer on the coast off and on throughout July/Aug (May grey/June gloom usually wraps up by early July), will this be the new norm for LA in July/August?
Tropical Storm Larry forms. It already has an eye and is due to strengthen into a Cat 3 by this weekend in the mid-Atlantic. Will likely hook north with no imminent danger to the US. But it's strong and should be watched.
Off and on heavy rain in Arlington today but the tornados/winds were off to the east. That after severe thunder and lightning at 3AM last night that woke people up. And that after t-storms almost everyday lately. But this is the last gasp. Ten day forecast shows nothing in the nineties and less precip. There's a gap in the rain so I'm going out to sit and read while I can.
I'm not sure if I've just gotten used to less football content, or maybe I never could handle that much. Either way, it's like drinking from the football firehose.
Loving all the new content on this site, even if Substack isn't the ideal platform as the writers have mentioned before.
On the topic of the platform... while I love the new Blue and Gold theme, is there any chance we go back to a white background? Reading white text on a royal blue background isn't great for the eyes, especially for those of us who binge read in bed at night...
The site's background seems to be a little darker than the traditional "Yale Blue". However, in 2007 (I think?) Cal officially changed the blue to Pantone 282, which is a bit darker (and to my horror has a "4" value for red in RGB instead of the previous "0"). The site seems to be an exact match (or near) to this new Cal Blue. Somebody willing to look at the page's source code could probably tell you for certain if it's an exact match :).
Through the Cal Alumni Association I'm taking a free class on Food Culture and the Environment - and wow, classes are a ton different since I graduated (uh, 25 years ago) - the entire digital toolkit and discussion board for students is a bit overwhelming - plus course materials from not only readers, but also youtube and podcasts. I feel really old now. It's super interesting, but man there's a lot of reading. It was a lot easier when I could just go to Cafe Strada and the only other thing besides doing my reading was wondering if ****** got my voice mail and was interested in going to hang out in the City this weekend. (She was, but then she ended up dating some white dude with dreadlocks)
Oh that reminds me I want to sign up for this. Hopefully it isn't too late. I also want to sign up for the Hisory of the Civil Rights Movement course as well.
I passed out on the BART train heading back to my Noe Valley apartment after a FULL day of drinking in Berkeley for the 2004, 12:30 p. kick-off Big Game win - woke up at SFO at like 1:00 am....we're talking a 12+ hour Patron Anejo shift, which began with mimosas at a tailgate at 10 am, and featured stops along the way at Henry's, Blake's, Kip's, Jupiter AND, of course, SFO, plus various other houses of alcohol ill-repute along the way.
$70 cab ride back to the apartment...but a win is a win!
Not counting BART, in Taiwan I've been to Tamsui at the end of the Red line and the Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center which is the terminus of two different lines.
I spent 2 weekends working in Tamsui - but there aren't any "real" hotels out there, just short term hotels. And while they *can* provide paid for company if you want, they're mainly for younger people living at home who need a little privacy away from the parents. I was working events and man, it was weird to be sweating all day and come back to a crappy hotel with a bowl of condoms on the bedside table, porno on the tv and a round bed. And then to get company reimbursement for nights in a love motel.
Once when I was working in Germany a colleague was going to visit some relatives that lived a couple hours from where we were. On the train on the way back she fell asleep and ended up in an empty train in the train yard. A worker found her and got her back to the official end of the line.
There are 18 subway lines in Shanghai, but some terminal stations end as part of different lines - so there are 23 extreme terminal stations. I just did a quick count and i have only been to 4 - one of which is Shanghai Disney Resort, and one of which is Pudong Airport. I don't know if I care to journey to any others - all of which are in the deep suburbs (I have been to a couple more but not on the subway itself)
Made avgolemono (Greek chicken, egg and lemon soup) over the weekend, and it was great. Amanda Mull (writer for the Atlantic, loosely connected to the EDSBS universe) posted her recipe and it was super east and I had soup for days. And when I was done, I was crazing it again.
1. Make soup - full chicken (i broke mine down because my le Creuset wasn't able to full hold a full chicken. add in a few carrots - peeled and rough chopped. a few celery stalks, rough chopped. 1 white or yellow onion quarters. Bring to boil, then reduce heat to let simmer until you've got some stock on hand. (like 30-45 min?)
2. Make the egg lemon mixture. juice of two lemons. two eggs. Beat together.
3. Combine stuff. - first remove chicken and place aside. Then remove vegetables and scum from soup - I used a strainer. Then take about 1.5 cups of the hot stock and slowly stream it into the egg/lemon mixture until it gets really cloudy. Not too fast - don't want the egg to cook. You're just tempering the egg now. Once you have the egg/lemon mixture tempered, stream it back into the pot with 1-1.5 cups of orzo and cook according to orzo instructions. Stir stir stir and add salt to taste.
4. Shred the chicken meat and remove from bones. Add back into the cooking orzo/chicken/egg/lemon mixture.
5. Once orzo is cooked through, serve with olive oil and tons of black pepper.
Texas is never turning blue in our lifetime. Democrats would be better off putting money and time into Georgia and Arizona to keep those gains and the upper Midwest.
Perhaps we push harder in Florida but Democrats haven’t done well in state or federal elections for the last two decades in Florida.
both texas and florida need to do what georgia (and earlier what california) did. Get the democratic party organized and focus on getting out the vote for every election. But that's not sexy and it is work, which the political consultant machine is reluctant to do.
It seems to me in the last elections the democratic hope for Texas and Florida was the Latino vote. They seemed to vote on the side of either their faith or the republicans hammering the socialist threat. I think it's going to be hard to get Latinos to vote against abortion but maybe the socialist threat can be overcome.
I read a follow up about democratic party organization in FL after the last election. Multiple counties didn't have any sort of democratic party organization to counteract the constant republican messaging from the media.
“If these companies comply with the Democrat order to turn over private information, they are in violation of federal law and subject to losing their ability to operate in the United States,” McCarthy said in Tuesday’s statement. “If companies still choose to violate federal law, a Republican majority will not forget and will stand with Americans to hold them fully accountable under the law.”
Schiff said on Tuesday that McCarthy’s threat was “premised on a falsehood.”
--------------
And yet McCarthy doesn't state what law they're violating.
A wild scoop: A GOP lawmaker has been trying to travel to *Taliban-controlled Afghanistan* in a rogue evacuation mission despite efforts by the Pentagon & State Dept to discourage him. Officials are unsure of his current whereabouts.
An anti-masker urinated on the counter at a Dairy Queen in Port Alberni, Canada, after he was told to leave. He had been kicked out earlier for not wearing a mask, then returned
The Oakland A’s finally put some runners on base in front of their homers.
Both teams went deep three times Tuesday night at Comerica Park, but two of Oakland’s dingers came with runners on while the Detroit Tigers settled for three solo shots. The A’s also added a few more rallies to their power display, and came out on top 9-3 in the opener of a three-game series.
Entering today, 20 of Oakland’s last 22 homers had come with nobody on base, a particularly painful inefficiency given the number of close games they’ve played lately. They got to work early changing that trend.
One of these days, I’ll get a game that’s so good, everyone will be jealous of the fact I got a chance to recap it. It’ll have everything working: an ace starting pitcher that’s allergic to runs, a bullpen of nothing but prime Mariano Riveras, and an offense that hits every ball 115 mph to every corner of the field. They’ll call the lineup “Alcatraz Alley” or some other equally memeable reference to “Murderer’s Row,” but we’ll be so proud of having a superteam that we’ll recite the nickname with pride and plaster it all over t-shirts from San Franpsycho. That game will be such a good game, so clearly dominated by the Giants, that Manfred will come out after the fourth inning and call a mercy rule as the Giants already lead 107-0 and every batter on the other team struck out on three pitches. And of course it’ll be against the Dodgers, who by that time will be so comically inept they’ll make Abbott & Costello’s “Who’s On First” look like a deeply serious wartime skit in comparison.
One day, I’ll recap that game. That day, however, was not today. So I guess I should do what my actual job is and recap this game, which the San Francisco Giants lost to the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-2...
Corey Seager’s RBI double in the eighth inning completed a methodical Dodgers comeback, beating the Braves 3-2 on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.
Coupled with the Giants’ home loss to Milwaukee, the Dodgers now trail in the National League West by only a half-game, the closest they’ve been in the division since July 6.
Mookie Betts walked to open the eighth inning, and one out later scored with ease on Seager’s double, showing no ill effects of the hip injury that has sidelined him on the injured list twice in the last month and a half.
Cal favored by 3 at home vs Nevada Sat. night. Wolf Pack +3 looks like a good value for a modest investment. Hard to see anyone putting large $s on this one either way.
I guess this is the end of the line for DBD. See you all at SFO.
Wow, that was a surprise. So the DBD is paywalled now, huh? So long everyone.
Yeah, I thought it was settled that DBD wouldn’t be behind a paywall. It looks like they changed that decision, which is fine but it would have been nice to have some sort of warning that the decision was changed.
. . . and we're back!
I'm guessing it is a configuration error.

Made a giant quesadilla last night.
1. Shred 4 cups of chicken
2. Grate 4.5 cups of cheese, sharp cheddar
3. Empty contents of can of pinto beans into bowl
4. Arrange 4 giant buttered tortillas on cookie sheet
5. Sprinkle chicken and cheese, add pinto beans, scattered around
6. Arrange 4 giant buttered tortillas on top of mix
7. Cover with second cookie sheet
8. Bake at 450 degrees for 25 minutes
9. When done, serve with pico de gallo, sour cream, and green salsa if desired, and/or guacamole
Also, add in diced green chiles...
Maybe add some bell peppers?
