You put the balm on? Who told you to put the balm on? I didn't tell you to put the balm on. Why'd you put the balm on? You haven't even been to see the doctor. If you're gonna put a balm on, let a doctor put the balm on.

Expand full comment

My father literally got addicted to lip balm. His body stopped producing moisture for his lips, which mean the skin would crack then peel off. He looked like a burn victim with smooth flat pink lips with undefined edges before he could wean himself off the balm. Because of that, our family only uses it for temporary emergencies (eg, skiing, beach).

dmoneyfor3's avatar

wait, is that a thing? Does it happen with specific types of lip balm, or all of them?

This is controversial. Some say it doesn't exist. All I know is what I see. When he used it, he looked like Jim Carrey's Fire Marshall Bill. When he didn't he healed up. Some say it is fake news, like Scootie's MSG narrative.

so, I have a high school friend who has a skin allergy to one of the sunscreen chemicals in lip balm, so his lips always get red and irritated from most kinds. Before he knew about the allergy, he would just apply more because, well, his lips were irritated!

Maybe it's something like that?

Were you the one who dislikes Burt's Bees? Because I, too, found that my lips were MORE chapped after using their lip balm. My current favorites are a lip balm that my friend made and the Laneige lip sleeping mask. I use one of them every night after I brush my teeth, but don't otherwise apply lip balm.

"Twice in the final months of the Trump administration, the country’s top military officer was so fearful that the president’s actions might spark a war with China that he moved urgently to avert armed conflict.

In a pair of secret phone calls, Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, assured his Chinese counterpart, Gen. Li Zuocheng of the People’s Liberation Army, that the United States would not strike, according to a new book by Washington Post associate editor Bob Woodward and national political reporter Robert Costa.

One call took place on Oct. 30, 2020, four days before the election that unseated President Trump, and the other on Jan. 8, 2021, two days after the Capitol siege carried out by his supporters in a quest to cancel the vote.

The first call was prompted by Milley’s review of intelligence suggesting the Chinese believed the United States was preparing to attack. That belief, the authors write, was based on tensions over military exercises in the South China Sea, and deepened by Trump’s belligerent rhetoric toward China.

“General Li, I want to assure you that the American government is stable and everything is going to be okay,” Milley told him. “We are not going to attack or conduct any kinetic operations against you.”

Watched "The Lion in Winter" - a 1968 film depicting Peter O'Toole as King Henry II, also starring Anthony Hopkins and Timothy Dalton as his sons and Catherine Hepburn as Eleanor of Aquitaine. Script and dialog were very good.

Expand full comment
FiatSlug's avatar

That was a good film. Hepburn won the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Eleanor of Aquitane in "Lion in Winter". Hepburn actually tied with Barbra Streisand for the Best Actress Oscar that year. Hepburn won the Best Actress Oscar the previous year for her portrayal of Christina Drayton in "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?".

I watch that film every once in a while because of the powerhouse performances from Hepburn, O'Toole, Hopkins, and Dalton. O'Toole was nominated for Best Actor for his portrayal of King Henry II (Cliff Robertson won it for playing Charly Gordon in "Charly").

The film was nominated for 7 Oscars and won 3 (Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score for a Motion Picture (not a Musical)). Great story, great actors, great movie.

From IMDB:

Delightfully wacky, oddball comedy. Elaine May's deliciously inept, awkward, filthy rich botanist character is possibly one of her best roles ever. Walter Matthau is wonderful as a spoiled, superannuated rich kid.

I don't think this film ever got much recognition, but in my estimation it's right up there with some of the best off-beat films ever, like Harold & Maude, King of Hearts, etc.

Now that second-run movie theaters are a thing of the past, perhaps the definition of cult status will be harder to determine; but this film certainly deserves to be there.
