Alright all you college age denizens of Berkeley, past and present!

Here's a Berkeley trivia question worthy of your memory and investigatory skills.

There are eight (8) streets in Berkeley with "The" (definite article) in the street name. Can you name six (6) of them?

HINTS

(A) three of these streets are clustered in a neighborhood east of Grizzly Peak Blvd; a fourth street is close to the other three.

(B) one street has its northern terminus in the Thousand Oaks neighborhood while the southern terminus meets the northern terminus of a different street renamed for a Civil Rights leader.

(C) one street intersects Claremont Ave.

(D) another street comes close to intersecting the street in Hint (C)

(E) this last street is quite well known. It has five entrance streets and five exit streets and surrounds a North Berkeley landmark.

Non-college age denizens of Berkeley may also participate in this trivia quiz. They might find it challenging and fun.

Padres make Gausman work in Giants loss

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2021/9/16/22678723/san-francisco-giants-san-diego-padres-kevin-gausman-recap-score

Nothing came easy for San Francisco Giants starter Kevin Gausman on Thursday, throwing 100 pitches over five innings, while giving up four runs on eight hits in a 7-4 loss to the San Diego Padres.

For the most part, Gausman had good stuff. His splitter was dropping out of the strike-zone and his fastball was topping out at 98 MPH. He wasn’t his sharpest, but no one is in September with nearly 200 innings pitched punching you repeatedly your throwing arm.

[Pause while I watch Brandon Belt hit in the bottom of the 9th...Damn. Ok, back to programmed recap]

What hurt Gausman today is what hurts most pitchers: pesky hitters who hit bad pitches.

The Padres put together some great at-bats in high-leverage situations in which they were down in the count but were able to spoil compelling pitches, stick to their zone, and pounce on mistakes.

Expand full comment

If the last two games is what wakes the Padres up and kick starts a run to the second WC and eventually a WS championship, that would be a very contorted twist to this season.

Expand full comment

No way, not with the state of their pitching staff. Hopefully it's enough to knock off the Giants a few times over their last set of games.

Expand full comment

I don't necessarily mind the Giants losing some games to the Padres like this, as they do have a talented lineup and should be able to put rallies together.

I'm annoyed that they didn't do any of this while losing EVERY GAME to the Dodgers.

Expand full comment

As a Padres fan, I agree. At this point my only hope is we get hot and get the second WC spot and the Giants get the first WC. I think the Pads have the talent and enough pitching to defeat the Giants in a 1 game playoff.

NYG vs Washington (30-29 Washington) goes down to the wire in about the 3rd "game of the year" contender in just week 2. Daniel Jones blows a wide open 35 yd TD to Darius Slayton in the 4th that proved to be the difference despite Washington QB Taylor Heinecke almost blowing it with a late interception to James Bradberry, Washington got another chance for the game winning kick after Dexter Lawrence jumped offsides, resulting in a game that is along the lines of Browns vs Chiefs and Ravens vs Raiders.

Notre Dame confirms that it is awful

Purdue is known for its drum as much as its football. Notre Dame won’t let it in, its band says.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2021/09/17/purdue-drum-notre-dame-stadium/

Harrumph!

Seems to me that UND could choose to be gracious hosts. But NNNNNOOOOOOO!!! The Domers have to reserve the largest tunnel for their massive egos.

Expand full comment

I think Cal should tell Notre Dame they're bringing back the live bear on the sidelines that they had about a hundred years ago. Sure, having a live bear on the field is the worst idea in the world and Notre Dame will never go for it, but I'd take advantage of their apparent jumpiness, announce we're bringing a live bear, and make them tell us no.

Expand full comment

John Cox will bring the bear with him.

Expand full comment

Why should Notre Dame undo its normal protocols so that Purdue can bring a drum? I hate to be defending Notre Dame, but the visitors don't get to dictate the terms, and it's not like ND switched something around just so Purdue couldn't do it.

Expand full comment

As I read the article, UND did change things around. Here's the relevant reporting. The second paragraph is why I think Notre Dame is (are?) being unkind jerks.

A Notre Dame athletics administrator familiar with stadium operations noted that the marching band and its drum would not use the visitors tunnel but would enter and exit through stadium and field entrances, some of which are also too small for the drum upon its carriage. He emphasized that denying Purdue use of the home team tunnel for its drum was consistent with protocols in place since 2017, which include limiting access for media members, and not representative toward ill will toward an opponent. The administrator added that Notre Dame welcomed Purdue and its band, which included having the school’s Boilermaker Special train mascot on campus.

Purdue is playing Notre Dame for the 87th time, but Saturday will be their first meeting since 2014. Three years after that Shillelagh Trophy showdown, a major renovation to Notre Dame Stadium included the addition of a narrow tunnel for visiting squads, at which point the much larger main tunnel was reserved for the home team.

Expand full comment

"denying Purdue use of the home team tunnel for its drum was consistent with protocols in place since 2017"

Expand full comment

2017 is 3 years after Purdue's last visit to Notre Dame Stadium. Why is UND determined to be a$$holes about sharing a tunnel for 5 minutes?

Expand full comment

It's an asshole move, since they haven't been there since 2014.

Expand full comment

I didn’t read the article so I’m not sure if it mentions it but two questions:

1. Did ND previously allow Purdue to bring the drum when they played?

2. Does Purdue travel with the drum and take it all away games?

Expand full comment

The clear inference of the article is YES top both questions.
