I don't have a Reddit account, so I don't know how much this is customized, but on the front page, there's usually a "top broadcast," (which I also don't get..like where is this broadcast?) but just now, the top broadcast was a band from my area! Some people I went to high school with are involved, so I follow them on Fbook, and I thought I recognized someone in the still, clicked, and was like WHOA IT REALLY IS THEM! Not sure if this link will work: https://www.reddit.com/rpan/r/pan/iyet0z?related=home

Yup. Like people are going to curfew at 9 PM. It's BS. The Attorney General said the cops knocked and announced themselves even though some said they didn't.

Expand full comment
heyalumnigo's avatar

Like I told my coworkers that live in Louisville, I think the mayor's office already knows the announcement since they put the city in a state of emergency, boarded up the govt offices, and are asking people to stay away from downtown. The National Guard has been staging across the river in S. Indiana. Why would you do that? Because you know the announcement is that the cops are getting off. Which is unsurprising for Kentucky. As another coworker said, when the police dept gave her family 12 Mil, that's basically hush money. Also the Attorney General is a black Republican so he's probably waiting to see what Trump is going to do for him.

But what's the argument against microwaving the coffee? It's too hot right away because I think the risk of it superheating is low since it has stuff other than water.

Love it Cugel...actually had this discussion at dinner this weekend during the quarterly Indiana Jones marathon on Paramount TV...I’m partial to Raiders (Forrestal was good...he was very good.), tho Crusade was just the slightest of ticks behind...up there with the all-time great follow ups - Newellbany and I caught it opening night at the Grand Lake.

But for as good as Raiders and Crusade were, Doom and Skull we’re shockingly disappointing....

Expand full comment

Raiders is the best, though I do like a lot of Last Crusade. It's just that the filmmaking is far and away the most superlative in Raiders. It's a gorgeous movie.

So I watched Last Crusade last night (thanks for letting me borrow the DVD, Cugel!) and it turns out I actually had only seen bits and pieces before, and not the full movie. It was very good, but not as good as Raiders. I agree with sycasey.

I have a soft spot for Temple of Doom but objectively it's not as good.

I do really like Indy's father as a character: kind of unexpected that he turns out to be a big dork, but it's fun to see how that plays off the Indy persona. I'm not as big a fan of how it makes the formerly nuanced, intelligent supporting characters like Marcus and Sallah into cartoonish comic relief.

Raiders, Last Crusade, Temple of Doom.

Expand full comment
g.oso's avatar

Temple of Doom, like most second movies of trilogies from the 80s suffers bc it moves away from the original, whereas the 3rd movie always seemed to tie back into the first.

Expand full comment
sycasey's avatar

Doom has some great action set-pieces and the PG-13 horror elements are fun too, but I just can't get past how sexist/racist the whole thing is. It's not like the rest of the trilogy is free of racial stereotyping, but ToD seems to take it to a whole other level.

I realize they are paying homage to old-fashioned action serials from the 30s, complete with their old-fashioned orientalism . . . but isn't that why you update? Bring the fun stuff into a more modern age, not just keep it all stuck in the past?

Expand full comment
Cugel's avatar

Even that's not the only flaw - the whole plot is pointless, they randomly land in someplace in India, Indy isn't searching for anything, and they get roped in to helping some villagers - it's dumb.

The opening sequence is the best part, all downhill from there.

Expand full comment
atoms's avatar

One thing that I didn't really get in Last Crusade was at the end... what group of people was it that comes in and disperses the Nazis and palace guards from the seal room? Sallah's friends? The crescent people? How was it that everyone else simply disappeared but the final 4?

Agreed...it was Marion Ravenwood or bust...

Expand full comment
sycasey's avatar

Fun fact: the original cut of Raiders didn't have Marion showing up at the end of the movie. Then when they showed the movie to their inner circle of friends and advisors, George Lucas' wife at the time, Marcia, said that the ending had no emotional heft because the girl disappears. They shot a new ending with Marion meeting Indy outside the government building (SF City Hall used as a stand-in).

Marcia Lucas was also a talented film editor in her own right, so those "movie brat" directors all listened to her. She can also be credited with helping to save the trench run sequence in the original Star Wars.

Expand full comment
Cugel's avatar

I didn't know that

Expand full comment
sycasey's avatar

Marcia Lucas is quite an interesting Google deep-dive. She was hugely instrumental to a lot of the movies of that era. Star Wars probably wouldn't be what it was without her editing chops and the notes she gave to George, same with American Graffiti. She also edited Scorsese's early work, including Taxi Driver. Then she and George divorced shortly after Return of the Jedi, and I wonder if it's no coincidence that his work wasn't the same after that.

Jamal Murray, Nuggets punch back in Game 3

https://www.silverscreenandroll.com/2020/9/22/21451989/lakers-vs-nuggets-final-score-recap-stats-game-3-nba-playoffs

In Game 2, the Denver Nuggets showed that they’re a force to be reckoned with, but the Los Angeles Lakers were still able to escape with the win thanks to a game-winning 3-point shot from Anthony Davis. In Game 3, the Lakers needed more than 2.1 seconds of magic, and they got it in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, there just wasn’t enough for them to get the win this time.

After trailing by as much as 20 points — the most they’ve fallen behind by in any game during the entire NBA playoffs — the Lakers rallied in the fourth quarter and closed the gap to just three points. That was the closest they’d get, though, as the Nuggets outlasted them in the fourth to beat them 114-106. The series is now at 2-1.

Oakland A’s Game #54: Frankie Montas roughed up by former team, A’s lose 7-2

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2020/9/22/21452074/oakland-as-game-54-los-angeles-dodgers-score-result-clinch-nl-west-division

The Oakland A’s acquired Frankie Montas from the Los Angeles Dodgers back in 2016, and on Tuesday he got his first chance to pitch against his former team. Unfortunately, the Dodgers also happen to be the second-best scoring club in the majors this year, and they came out on top in this matchup.

Montas was knocked out after four innings, and the A’s lost 7-2 in a game where little went right for them in any department. With the win, plus a loss by the San Diego Padres, the Dodgers officially clinched the NL West division crown, joining the A’s as Western division winners.

The game began well enough for Oakland. Their second batter, Robbie Grossman, went yard on a 98 mph fastball, fighting it off for what looked like a harmless popup to left field or perhaps a foul ball. However, it kept carrying until it surprisingly bounced off the foul pole for an opposite-field dinger.

Giants find their groove late, beat Rockies 5-2

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2020/9/22/21451922/san-francisco-giants-rockies-final-score

Like so many great works of our time, the San Francisco Giants 5-2 win over the Colorado Rockies had three acts.

Let’s look at each.

Act 1: Hope and growth

The Giants 7-2 loss to the Rockies on Monday got off to an ominous start. Johnny Cueto allowed runners on the corners with just one out in the first inning, and only a few minutes into action, the game was on the line.

Cueto struck out Trevor Story, and a scoreless inning was within reach.

Expand full comment
SGBear's avatar

The Giants are horrible this year. They are winning not because they are good, but because of the short season and the bottom of the barrel of the NL and AL West divisions are even worse. The Padres are going to sweep them in the Giant's final 4 game homestand. I mean, hell man, they've got a rookie catcher, a rotation of nobodies, a bad pen, a SS at CF because they ran out of outfielders including the RF that is a minor-league journeyman who struggled with 0.250 batting mostly at single-A ball.

Expand full comment
sycasey's avatar

"because of the short season and the bottom of the barrel of the NL and AL West divisions are even worse."

I mean, this basically sounds like the makeup of a .500 team, which is what the Giants are. They only have a shot at the playoffs because of the expanded field. .500 is still much better than I would have expected.

Expand full comment
heyalumnigo's avatar

Basically you have the A's, Dodgers, and Padres. @Shocked the Astros are struggling offensively@. Although the Padres are much better than I or anyone thought they would be. They sure are going all in. Giants are definitely much better than I thought they would be.

https://www.truebluela.com/2020/9/22/21451881/los-angeles-dodgers-national-league-west-division-champions-2020

For the eighth year in a row, the Los Angeles Dodgers are the National League West champions.

The best team in baseball clinched the division and the No. 1 seed in the National League on Tuesday night with a 7-2 win over the Athletics at Dodger Stadium, coupled with a Padres loss at home to the Angels a little earlier in the night.
