Hi guys! Been a while. I'm in DFW and thought I'd share some trip tips:
Here comes my post in multiple sections:
Texas Travel Tips
What to eat in DFW
What to do in DFW
Misc. Extra Information
A lot of these may repeat for next year's game at UNT, which is 40 minutes North of TCU.
Texas Travel Tips
Welcome back to the land of plastic bags and Styrofoam to go containers!
-Allergies are a thing out here. Even if you don't believe you have allergies, bring some Claritin with you. There's all sorts of seasonal allergies that will literally kick the snot out of you. (I once lost hearing in my right ear after my ear canal was too congested)
-Very little of the population here will be wearing masks outdoors. Most don't wear masks indoors either.
-Trucks have no minimum speed limit and will be in passing lanes going 70+ mph.
-If you're renting a car, be sure to check your rental car policy for toll charges. A lot of the highways are tollways (including the one that runs straight through DFW airport).
-There are Walmart and Target and Kroger stores aplenty if you need anything. And yes, Walmart is not bad out here relative to the Bay Area.
-Go to Buc'Ees
What to eat in DFW
Do not expect to be able to comply with any kind of healthy diet while out here.
You're in Texas and will likely want to try the BBQ and Tex Mex. (I really don't like Tex Mex.. but I'll share it anyway). You'll find most of the Texas taste is a bit more salty/greasy than the fresh ingredient stuff from the Bay Area. I'll split this up by geographical area. If you're really going all out for solid BBQ: https://www.texasmonthly.com/food/the-list-the-top-50-barbecue-joints-in-texas/
Downtown Fort Worth
-BBQ: Coopers, Heim, Smileys, Panther City
AVOID Dickeys do not go there
-Fried Chicken: Babe's
-Steakhouse: Perry's
-Asian: ha... very little Asian options. Gotta go East to Haltom City for good Viet food.
-Breakfast: Ol' South Pancake House
-Tex Mex: Joe T Garcias
-Because you can: Whataburger (love it or hate it - it's everything Burger King could be if it maximized its potential)
Far North Fort Worth (near Texas Motor Speedway)
-BBQ: 407 BBQ (they have a gun range too if you want Bullets and BBQ)
-Buc'Ees: Ever wanna see what a 100 pump gas station/convenience store/cleanest bathrooms looks like?
-Fried Chicken: Babe's again
-Downtown Roanoke has some unique food options - Soul Bird Chkn is the best chicken sandwich I've had in DFW
DFW Airport vicinity
-Deli: Weinberger's Deli in Grapevine - Chicago style deli with a really good muffuletta and italian beef sandwich (you can have it dipped in the jus too!) The people behind the counter are legit rude enough that you know it's done right
-Shake Shack in Southlake (near Southlake Carroll High School)
-Perry's Steakhouse in Southlake
Carrolton/Frisco/Plano (aka Asian food time!)
I will say this - the Korean food in DFW is great but not as good as LA. That said, I don't miss LA Korean food because of the DFW Korean food scene.
-BBQ: Hutchins or Cattleack - there may be a wait line
-Korean food: HMart plaza in Carrolton has a ton of korean food options. Personal Favorites: Ari BBQ, Arirang (AKA Ummason) for kalgooksu/best kimchi in town, Ajumma's for Soondaeguk
-Chinese: Kirin in Plano, 888 Cookhouse in Frisco, Wu Wei Din in Plano (really good noodles and dumpling spot), Hai Li Dao or Squares for Hot Pot
-Japanese: Mitsuwa in Plano
-Boba - OneZo in Carrolton - scratch made boba daily
Dallas Love Airport/Downtown Dallas
-Korean: Doma Seolleongtang, Burning92 (Korean BBQ), Komart sells bungeoppang
-Emporium Pies in Dallas
What to do in DFW
-Fort Worth Stockyards - longhorn cattle drive every day at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m - pretty cool sight to see. Plenty of shops and places to eat. Good place to find cowboy boots/hats. Walk around the historic train station that leads to the wild wild west or take the historic train to Downtown Grapevine!
-Watch some action at Dallas Live! (Located next to Globe Life Field and Cowboys Stadium)
Downtown Grapevine is a cool part of town to stroll and relax. There's a new food court near the train station.
-Eat.
-Six Flags Over Texas
-Buc'Ees (repetition build a point, yes?)
Misc. Extra Information
-Weather forecasts can often be complicated by the atmospheric dome that covers DFW. There have been times where the forecast calls for a fun sun day, but then a severe thunderstorm warning comes out of nowhere. Prepare accordingly.
-Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate. Humidity is a thing. It's gonna feel like you're living in Goliath's armpit.
-People are friendly here and will wave/say howdy - if they don't, they're likely from California. Don't be a stranger, say hello!
Feel free to add to the list! And a big Texan welcome to my fellow Golden Bear fans.
You got me looking up flight prices to Fort Worth again...and they are still quite cheap (especially if I'm flying with just a backpack on Spirit with stupidly dumb but not insane layovers)...
Watch Furd lose to K-state, get some yard work done....maybe watch a bit of SC and SJSU, do some real work, head off to the Cal game. I'm only 2 miles from Memorial so that's pretty easy. Enjoy the night game ambience. Sunday: off.
I forgot that we're supposed to drive up to the lake for the weekend. I start to hem and haw about me needing time to clean up the house to get it ready ahead of the videographer we're hiring when I'm in DFW for the TCU game (I'm selling my house). I'm going on about how it's a lot more work than one thinks it is and how I really feel guilty about leaving her to do such a big task.
She looks at me dead in the eye and then says "you want to watch the Cal game, don't you".
Busted.
The good news is that she then said "I know it's one of your few things you care about, so I don't begrudge you. Have a good time." She's a keeper.
smh, anyone who gets married during football season should expect a smaller attendance. Supreme Court recently upheld the law stating no one can judge you if you skip a wedding during football season
I'm waiting to see if I'm going to get my friend's parents tickets (seatback tickets). If I don't hear from them by tonight I'll just get the cheapest tickets I can find on seatgeek.
I hope Max Muncy is having a good morning in San Francisco. I hope he got plenty of rest, and that his coffee was made just right. He’s got a big meeting on the field tonight as the Giants’ team owner.
This series is the Dodgers' to lose. They are hot, have the biggest payroll and the most loaded roster, and will be throwing Price, Urias, and Buehler against three question marks in the Giants rotation (thanks to injuries and COVID stuff). If they don't win I will be highly amused.
Tonight is Price vs DeScalfani. This is the game that should be more winnable for the GIants. They beat up Price last time. If I recall, the Dodgers have done fairly well against DeScalfani this season.
Buehler and Scherzer are a bullpen game for the Giants so we'll see what happens. I bought Sunday tickets hoping the Dodgers might have all 3 big arms go on shorter rest because I wanted to see Scherzer. Looks like I'll have to settle for Buehler.
It's baseball so I could easily see the Giants sweep.
Road CONCACAF game, so I'm not terrible upset by a draw and 1 point. But El Salvador mucked it up quite well and kept us off balance all night, unti late in the second half McKennie and especially Gio Reyna got on track and looked dangerous for about 20 minutes. We had better get 3 vs Canada though.
the sad thing was that a draw was a fair result, its not like their keeper pulled off a string of stunning saves to keep it level. El Salvador had maybe 3 half chances, the US maybe 5. Absolutely crap result considering this is the weakest team in the final 8.
Repaste at the game tomorrow night....I hope the food is improved over what was available 2 seasons ago. Uninspired nachos, ho-hum chicken strips, a mediocre Bear burger on the east side of the stadium (or a Pierogi which you cannot eat with a plastic fork), some lousy Vegan offerings, etc., etc.
I learned the hard way that I chose the wrong cut of pork shoulder. The pig had amazing intramuscular fat, but poor intermuscular fat. It was too dry after essentially boiling away all that intramuscular fat. I should have saved it for a whole slow roast. The good news with cooking is that mistakes are learning lessons that can still taste good.
I know golden oso thinks this is cray but Mrs FS uses pork tenderloin in a slow cooker. We pile spices, peppers and onions on top and slow cook it. Comes out amazingly flavorful, slightly spicy, tender and moist after 6 hours or so. Then put in hot pan with oil to fry it up. Shit is life changing, yo
Can you tell the difference when buying them? I just bought a pork shoulder a couple hours ago and I don't have a really well defined strategy for picking them other than thinking "that one looks good."
Yeah. The Pork Shoulder/Boston Butt is the outer meaty shoulder sliced away from the loin (upper back) and neck. Look for the fat cap. Most grocery stores keep it on because it's weight, but some will trim it off. That's the "outside". On the the sides perpendicular to that side (across the grain), you should be able to see the intramuscular and intermuscular marbling. The intermuscular marbling is really on the lower part of the shoulder on the opposite side of the the cap.
Good to know! I usually look for one with a fat cap and a decent amount of marbling inside. This one's got pretty good marbling on the profile and the side opposite the cap. So it definitely passed the "that one looks good" test.
Yeah, that's kind of crazy. Also, I'm not sure it needs that much Guinness -- my cake recipe uses only 1 cup and you get plenty of the taste and it's really well balanced.
I was surprised by how dark it was. The first two were faulted for being overly cheery about the changes to the universe (which is not what the What If comic was usually like). Can't say that about this one.
Yeah, it's not what it used to be, but I do enjoy the "Popcorn Champs" series - haven't read the reviews of "what if" but can't miss the grades. Gave the Dr. Strange one a B
ASU cruised to a 41-14 win over Southern Utah, which still didn't come close to covering. The lines set vs Big Sky teams were clearly set to get people who bet blindly to lose money, and that effort was an apparent resounding success. Herm apparently did play to win the game.
UNLV confirms that they are not very good, losing to Eastern Washington. The TCU QB who had the numb foot that Cal couldn't catch and then transfered to UNLV had an awful game.
EW wins 35-33 in double OT, by stopping a 2 point conversion. Its the first time a rule change for this season, requiring a team to go for 2 starting in the 2nd OT instead of the 3rd came into play, and it had an impact.
I’ll miss this game, and am none too pleased...the late late start threw my plans for a loop.
My sis and I are taking her 3rd grade twins to the San Diego Symphony’s performance of The Goonies...the movie plays on the big screen while the symphony plays the score...fun night but can’t even watch on the phone...grrrrrr.
I'm flying up midday tomorrow and have 7am flight out of OAK on Sunday so I can get back in time to work at noon. I am not looking forward to Sunday, but a Golden Bear win will make the exhaustion all the better.
This is what I do. I usually miss part of the 1030pm EDT kickoffs, so I set the rest of the game to record, put the phone on airplane mode, and don't check anything until I finish the recording in the morning.
I’ll record & break down film later. Until proven otherwise, I expect a typical Wilcox-era dog fight with 1-2 plays making the difference b/t a W v L. Hope for a blowout, but…..I wish I was wired to be able to NOT check the score & watch later but I get too nervous on game days…my step-dad can do this with big A’s/Giants/W’s/49ers games & I find it quite annoying.
I plan on having a “bad tummy” & taking a couple bathroom breaks, & there was an intermission when I saw Galaxy Quest w/ the Symphony awhile back, so it won’t be complete radio silence, but chilling & watching on the couch is out. Bring us home a win DBD!!
I'll be eating gummy bears for a week as I get my last 2 wisdom teeth taken out today...how fun... Last time it took me 9 days before I was on my regular food diet again so lets see what happens in regards to that, it definitely won't help my presentations on knife appointments.
After I had two of my wisdom teeth out, my childhood dentist (who went to Cal--Go Bears!) explained to me how sucking on a straw creates a vacuum that can pull the blood clot right out of the socket and start the bleeding/coagulation process all over again. That was enough to put me off straws until I was fully sure it was healed. Blech.
No 2 had his taken out right about 2 weeks before the Redbox bowl. He tried to be careful but it turns out he got a pretty nasty infection. On the way to the Redbox bowl I called the dentist because the oral surgeon was on vacation. She said to come right in and she'd check him out. Looked at it and said he needed to go see the oral surgeon she recommended. We initially went to him but he was out of network so we went with an in network surgeon. He cleaned him out and said no charge. She brings him enough business. So I dropped off a batch of cinnamon rolls for the office the next day. We spent the hour+ in the waiting room watching the bowl game on my phone.

nam is getting married during college football season.
last fall wedding I was at . . .was also the huge Arizona comeback loss
Never forget that Twist's wedding was the 2006 Tennessee game
No wonder this is Nam's last season writing for W4C...
Kids double playdate tonight, kids birthday party tomorrow, Cal football, bbq with parents, Labor Day pool party. It's a crazy weekend.
Football, work, family. I seriously can not wait to get back in Memorial tomorrow night
football, smoke a pork shoulder, hit the trails on the mountain bike
Tosca tonight at SF Opera, Cal game tomorrow
Cal game on Sat. Dodgers game on Sun. Not sure about Monday yet.
I'm waiting to see if I'm going to get my friend's parents tickets (seatback tickets). If I don't hear from them by tonight I'll just get the cheapest tickets I can find on seatgeek.

No side effects yet. Though I do feel like crawling up the wall and spinning a web.
oh I guess I don't have a weakened immune system. I guess I'll have to wait.
Does this mean you get 6G coverage now?
Nice! Is it open to all or are there still requirements? Like 65+ or high health risks?

why does GO think it's crazy? Is it because it's tenderloin not Boston Butt?
Tenderloin has almost zero fat
ya, not enough fat I suppose. Whatever the Mrs does though, its magical
Rigatoni with sausage and meatballs last night...
Sausage AND meatballs?
I doubled down on the meats...
One of my favorite pastas is rigatoni with a fresh chunky tomato sauce with a touch of cream (like 1 Tbs/2 servings) and crumbled italian sausage.
Send me the recipe, let's fix the proportions. I need a project.
It's got way too much sugar in it -- do they taste overly sweet? I'm going to fool around with it this weekend.
Yeah, that's kind of crazy. Also, I'm not sure it needs that much Guinness -- my cake recipe uses only 1 cup and you get plenty of the taste and it's really well balanced.
DBD AV
Finished season 2 of Never Have I Ever. It was as good, if not better than season 1. It is such a great show and comedy. I can’t wait for season 3.
Totally agreed, the narrator thing shouldn't work, but somehow is brilliant.
McEnroe is great as the narrator.
I used to enjoy his US Open commentary. And he was great when he would show up on Letterman, especially during the US Open.
I was surprised by how dark it was. The first two were faulted for being overly cheery about the changes to the universe (which is not what the What If comic was usually like). Can't say that about this one.
But I really enjoyed the 2nd one, never seen the comic.
The last two have been a bit more darker, with Strange being the darkest.
Which one? I heard the Nick Fury one is bad, so we're going to skip it.
I think AVClub gave it a C-
Yeah, it's not what it used to be, but I do enjoy the "Popcorn Champs" series - haven't read the reviews of "what if" but can't miss the grades. Gave the Dr. Strange one a B

Utah handles Weber State 40-17. The underdog actually held out for awhile and made things semi-interesting. A state handles Southern Utah 41-14.
The Utes gave up an uncharacteristic 100-yard kickoff return TD after their first field goal.
I thought Utah's defense was not up to their usual standard.
Only gave up 10 points, and had a solid advantage statistically. I thought it was pretty typical Wittingham.

surely he doesnt hate himself that much. Even if he does listen, he'll never find out what is happening or what the score is
When listening to Joe one can never tell what is going on until Pawlawski recaps the play for the listeners.
Time to hit "record", and watch after the concert.
Gummies
I'll be eating gummy bears for a week as I get my last 2 wisdom teeth taken out today...how fun... Last time it took me 9 days before I was on my regular food diet again so lets see what happens in regards to that, it definitely won't help my presentations on knife appointments.
No rice either until heeled up. Decades later still remember trying and trying to flush a rice grain out- yuck.
That was tough for No 2. He loves rice.
No hot liquids, drinking straws, nuts or things with seeds.
Milkshakes. Definitely a lot of milkshakes, using a spoon. Mine was Jack in the Box because that's the only place we had locally.
Good luck! Hope you have frozen peas ready.
Hope it goes smoothly for you!
Get yourself a package of the best gummy bears in the world.
Preferably ones that are 1:1 THC CBD

Mmm... fruit-flavored pork gelatin.
Or go to a Sprouts and get them. It's the 12 flavor Gummy Bears and I think it's on sale right now.
Best of luck for a speedy recovery
Yes, recover well. I have only one wisdom tooth which never was extracted.
I only have one wisdom tooth...because the other three were extracted.
I had all 4 removed 1 year after Cal. 3 came out in a total of 1 minute. The fourth required 4 shots and 35 minutes.
I have 3 still, one removed long ago.
I only had two on the bottom and they were both removed 13 years ago
I still have all 4 and they don’t bother me. Every time I go to the dentist for my checkup and cleaning he tried to convince me to get them removed.
I had all 4 taken out with 3 other teeth, in one shot: cannot recommend tbh.
That would have required a considerable amount of anesthetic, so not remembering is explainable.
