i am oddly a bit of both. love waking up early and being productive or getting outside for a ride just as the sun is coming up. just need a shower and an espresso and i am more or less ready to go.

on the other hand writing code and watching west coast sports from eastern time zone makes it so that i rather enjoy staying up late.

also, while i am not the go-out-dancing-till sunrise type, i do LOVE staying out late in NYC. as they say ... "nothing good ever happens after midnight!"

Given all the issues with MLB not playing in a bubble, it is strongly helped by how there was no (known) transmission from playing the game (not sure that's going to be the case for football). Also, football players' size puts them at much more risk for COVID complications. This may all be quite disastrous.

By the way, I was kind of surprised by the number of "opportunities" to attend sporting events in the coming weeks for living in Western PA. Pitt's opening game this weekend will be fanless, but I think they are expecting to have fans for later games (IF we get there).

I wouldn't mind this result because (1) that means he lost the election and (2) there are plenty of state charges waiting for him.

Expand full comment

There is a danger in this strategy, as unlike Nixon, Trumps criminal activity isn't just about politics, but includes plenty of other stuff. A pardon that just says 'anything prior to this moment' might not fly.

Wouldn't he have to stand trial and be convicted for a pardon? If he resigns post Nov 3, i seriously doubt any trial or conviction happens before January 20.

Nixon wasn't. Ford just said 'anything to do with this bullshit by Mr. Nixon is pardoned' and then folks just didn't bother with any prosecution.

Oakland A’s Game #40: A’s can’t quite sweep doubleheader, fall 5-4 to Astros in nightcap

https://www.athleticsnation.com/2020/9/8/21428575/oakland-as-game-40-houston-astros-score-result-doubleheader

The Oakland A’s came close to completing a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday, but couldn’t come up with one final burst of magic to put them over the top in the nightcap. Still, a split isn’t so bad when you entered the day with a 4.5-game lead over your opponent in the division race.

The A’s fell to the Houston Astros 5-4 in the second game of the twin-bill, meaning the standings stayed the same when the dust settled. The AL West rivals have two more games together this week to wrap up their season series, with just over two weeks left in the regular season after that.

The first act of this game was nearly identical to the preceding afternoon affair. The A’s got to work early and built a 4-0 lead, but then Houston came back to tie it. However, whereas this afternoon Oakland put together another rally later to retake the lead, this evening it was the Astros who found the plate again in the final frame.

Giants creep above .500 with yet another comeback win

https://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2020/9/8/21428398/san-francisco-giants-mariners-final-score

The San Francisco Giants trailed the Seattle Mariners 5-1 during Tuesday’s game.

The San Francisco Giants led the Seattle Mariners 6-5 when the game concluded.

And with that, the Giants moved over .500 for the first time since Aug. 1, with their 22nd win of the year.

Of those 22, 11 have come in games where the Giants are trailing.

If you’re new to math, 11 is half of 22. You can quote me on that if you’d like.

Dodgers rally late for come-from-behind victory over D-Backs

https://www.truebluela.com/2020/9/8/21428572/los-angeles-dodgers-mlb-dbacks-recap-news-gavin-lux

Entering the seventh inning, the Dodgers had only two runs. They finished the game with 10, as two huge innings helped give them the 10-9 victory over the D-Backs.

The Dodgers began their rally in the seventh inning, scoring four runs to tie the game at six a piece. Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy both walked, putting two on for the rookie Gavin Lux. That’s a name we’ll get to a lot tonight.

Lux singled in Bellinger, bringing LA to within three runs. At the time, that wasn’t Lux’s biggest hit of the night. He hit his first home run of the season back in the second inning, an opposite field shot to put the Dodgers on the board.

ACC coaches proposing NCAA tournament with all Division I teams

https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/29844765/sources-acc-coaches-propose-tournament-all-division-teams

ACC men's basketball coaches are proposing an expanded 2021 NCAA tournament that would include every Division I team.

Several ACC coaches would prefer to avoid nonconference games in the 2020-21 season due to complications from the coronavirus pandemic, with sources telling ESPN that Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is spearheading the push for an all-inclusive NCAA tournament.

ACC coaches voted Wednesday to propose the expanded 2021 NCAA tournament, sources confirmed to ESPN. The vote was first reported by Stadium.

Krzyzewski released a statement later Wednesday that said, in part, there "is no better way" to celebrate the game "than involving every team in the most prestigious basketball tournament on the planet."

California was named by Spanish explorers based on a fictional island in a popular Spanish novel in the early 16th century. Heck, if JK Rowlings was a 16th century Spaniard, Cal might have been called something very different.

In the current political climate, I guess some people might much prefer to ret-con the "California" name to the French rather than the Arabs.

From that wiki article

"The author of the novel, Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo, also known as Ordóñez de Montalvo, is thought to have derived the term California from the Arabic Khalif and/or Khalifa, but he might also have been influenced by the term "Califerne" in the 11th-century epic French poem The Song of Roland."
