Even more pressure to hire a good OC and OL Coach.

Better not hire some uninspiring, middling and conservative Coaches, otherwise that large thud you’ll hear is the Cal fan’s hearts falling to the ground

Pressure? If you're a revenue sport HC at Cal there's really no pressure as long as you're under contract.

Like Huff ;) ?

What’s the rumor on Huff? He’s not a play caller, so would he just be an OL coach? Interesting story if he is moving over.

Which Huff is it?

"Wow, Holy sucking sound, Batman. Is that the transfer portal I hear?

Batman?...."

Let's just say, the OC needs to be an epic hire.

The only way to counter this move is if we hire Marshawn to be our HC or OC.

There's a thought. Bring in Marshawn as a recruiter/advisor.

He's already heavily involved in Cal's NIL effort. (But need more folks/sponsors to donate to the initiative). The weird dichotomy is that here we are in a wealthy environment where money for college athletics is scarce, yet in Alabama and Mississippi (actually the latter is the poorest state of the 50) they are awash in booster money. Meanwhile folks have been willing to plunk down 10-15k $ per game for a Warriors courtside seat.

Bold move, CU. I like it. Good for the Pac-12.

This is the type of hire Cal should make for MBB. Colorado is sort of analogous to Cal MBB. The world has forgot they exist. It's bold and unpredictable and brings some attention back to the program that would be otherwise lacking with a safer hire.

Who would you recommend? Maybe we could hire LeBron while he is still playing for the Lakers? Perhaps he would bring his son with him for one year.

Maybe the first major MBB female head coach?

That would definitely get us some attention and coverage on Fox News and Cucker Tarlson.

This must be a gut shot to Bob R. Jackson State was his second favorite FCS team whose name ends in "State."

And now we've got Prime Time, Neon Deion recruiting against Cal, so a double whammy.

Hopefully not a long stay at CU and he finds his way to Florida State.

Sooner rather than later….he’ll bolt. 3 years, tops. They’ll turn it around quickly with the portal…Cal won’t.

Cal and Colorado will probably be competing against each other for their next HC this time 2025 after Prime moves on and Wilcox gets let go.

I love it, that's great for Colorado and the Pac-X. Colorado won the national championship in 1990 and won the Pac12 south in 2016. I've no problem with them becoming a power once again.

Wow. I had not been following Jackson State. But ESPN sure follows them. What an impact he's had on Jackson State. If i'm reading correctly, it looks like Coach Prime and Jackson State elected NOT to play in the FCS championship playoffs because they could make (a LOT) more money playing in the Celebration Bowl?

Is Cal likely to lose some recruits and/or staff because of this hire?

Colorado can hire Musgrave 😂

goldenone's avatar

The only possible issue with the hire is that todays' recruits may not know who he is because he is 55 years old. However, he has a lot of stuff going on and is still a well-known figure in the football world and was a superstar in the league.

He's done the impossible by recruiting 5 star athletes to Jackson State. There are zero concerns about whether recruits know who he is.

He’s literally a candidate to be the top DB of all time….they know who Neon Deion is…from the Aflac commercials if nothing else!!

Legitimately the splashiest hire possible. Hard to know how well his success will translate to a bigger (and non-HBCU) program but it does send the message that Colorado is serious about reinvigorating their program. Should be a massive boon for their recruiting.

I am willing to bet that Colorado has a better record than Cal next season.

Colorado is going to crush HS recruiting and the portal with this hire.

ASU will as well…only question is will ‘Furd…Cal’s schedule is so tough next year, all 3 new hires at dogschitt programs will likely have a better record than Cal in year 7 of Wilcox. That’s just sad.

Apparently Coach Prime has brought a lot of big money donors and big time sponsors to Jackson State. That could play out even bigger at CU

goldenone's avatar

Interesting hire to be sure and a conversation starter. I see him imbuing Colorado with some fresh energy. It does seem, though, that the conference is reloading with quality new coaches all around along with the "elder" statesman Kyle Whittingham. Wilcox is the 2nd longest tenured coach now after Whittingham and needs to start picking up some wins in conference play. Otherwise we will continue to wonder "why?" when looking at the W/L record.

Super risky move, but great for Colorado. Hard to tell how good of a coach Deion is, considering he just completely out-talented everyone at JSU.

Where was Cal when Sanders became available??

Expand full comment
CamHand's avatar

Don't overlook the fact that CU was willing to drop their admissions standards (at least for transfers) for Sanders to take the job. I'm pretty sure CAL was and always will be on the sidelines when that tradeoff is part of the hiring package. NIL is important nowadays but when a lot of the kids who are really dedicated to football only want to go to practice and not go to class... I don't think CAL will ever be that dedicated to football as an institution.

What frustrates me is that CAL can be dedicated to education and still be a whole lot better at football than we are.

PawlOski's avatar

We would never consider it. We don't have that kind of imagination in our athletic department. Plus, I'm sure the powers think they're "above" someone with the charisma and credentials that someone like Deon brings. We only value excellence when it applies elsewhere.
