Cal TE Gavin Reinwald enters the transfer portal
Third Golden Bear to enter the transfer market.
The California Golden Bears are likely starting fresh at the tight end position. Gavin Reinwald officially announced he will be graduate transferring for his final year of eligibility.
Reinwald joined the Bears in 2017, redshirted in 2018, and then played most of his last three seasons, totalling 31 receptions, 315 yards and 4 touchdowns during his time at Cal. Reinwald caught two touchdowns in his senior campaign against Oregon and Colorado.
Reinwald is the third transfer in the past three days, joining running back Christopher Brooks and defensive end JH Tevis.
Jake Tonges is a redshirt senior and Collin Moore is graduating as well, meaning Cal likely has to fill in all the spots on their tight end three-deep. That leaves five tight ends on the roster who are certain to return, including Keleki Latu and Jermaine Terry, both of whom saw playing time this year in their freshmen campaigns. Sophomore Elijah Mojarro also caught a few passes this season. It is quite likely Cal will look at the transfer market for additional tight end depth as well.
I was reading The Athletic and a story on the transfer portal. If this ain't Wilcox as the blind source, I don't know who it could be:
"One Power 5 head coach said he intends to change his portal QB recruiting strategy in 2022. Last year, he had a returning starter his school had signed out of high school as a four-star recruit. The coach wanted to add some experience to the room, but he didn’t want to have the starter looking over his shoulder. So the coach signed an older quarterback from a far less prestigious program who could be serviceable but whose ceiling was limited. Near the end of the season, the coach said he wouldn’t do that again. He’d recruit the best quarterbacks available in the portal and not worry about the starter’s feelings."
I'll be hyped if Wilcox targets the LSU QB Matt Johnson and his 5 star TE brother...
