Everyone talks QB, RB, WR, etc, but no one ever talks ILB's or edge rushers. This is the reason that the Lions and Niners won the games. Who made the interceptions that figuratively ended the games. The Inside Linebackers.

So deeply happy for Jared and the Lions. Who doesn't like an underdog. I'm a loyal SOB, which is the only reason I'm still such an ardent Cal fan, and so my 49ers will be getting my support, but I will certainly be happy for Jared if they were to go to the big game. I fear Baltimore will steamroll whoever they face.

Great job, Lions!

Go Niners.

Goff is coming back to San Francisco to play for a chance to play in his second Super Bowl.

I'll be happy no matter who wins, but part of me really wants the Lions and Goff, just so he can say a big 'fuck you!' to Sean McVay.

That small town has produced a handful of NFL quarterbacks

The little beach town of Aptos (south of Santa Cruz) produced a Super Bowl winning QB...Trent Dilfer. I dated one of his cheerleaders....years after he got out of high school.

Gonna be some conflicted Cal fans next week. Being from LA, I already worked through mine. Go Lions!

I didn't care for Rodgers-less Packers so I rooted for the Niners last night but I am definitely rooting for Lions next week

Bucs could have called a timeout and forced a punt there, I wonder why they didn't?

Expand full comment

Because it was over. In other words, if the Bucs had called a timeout, the Lions would have kicked a field goal and the lead would have been 11.

Expand full comment

i'd have made them kick it, maybe missed, maybe blocked, and in either case 20 sec or so to try a couple of hail marys

I’m sorry, why did TB go for 2.

Expand full comment

It works when needing exactly 14 points and placing a premium on winning in regulation. Miss the first and you can still at least tie with the 2nd.

Can never count any playoff team out with time left but Goff is going for the kill when given the chance.

That should have been a sack by Alualu! Instead it's incomplete pass and Bucs score TD on the next play.

didn't even know he was still playing. Go Lions!

He was signed just a month ago but has been playing well.

A clarification and a correction. Clarification: Detroit played for the NFL Western Conference Championship in 1957 vs San Francisco at Kezar Stadium. The Lions and 49ers were tied for first place with 8-4 records. Detroit defeated San Francisco 31-27. The NFC, as such, didn't exist until 1970, after the merger with the AFL.

The Lions played the Cleveland Browns (NFL Eastern Conference champions) for the 1957 NFL Championship and routed the Browns, 59-14.

Correction: Detroit last played in the NFC Championship game in 1991 vs. Washington Red-potato-skins, which Washington won, 41-10.

Was Alex Karas on the Lions that far back?

Expand full comment

Pro Football Hall of Fame says Karas was drafted 10th overall in the 1958 draft. So, no.

before Karras. Bobby Layne was the QB of the championship team

Lions with Goff should win. But don't dismiss Baker Mayfield and the Bucs.

Expand full comment

That DET secondary is the great equalizer. If Hutchinson & Co. can’t get home, Mayfield can do damage.
