Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele will enter transfer portal, Cal is back in the mix
The stunning National Signing Day flip of Cal's quarterback to Oregon has another plot twist.
Oh how the twists turn in the every day world of college football recruiting.
Jaron Keawe Sagapolutele was committed to Cal for most of the latter half of 2024, only to make a surprising flip on National Signing Day to Oregon. It was a very tough blow for Cal fans looking to rebuild
But it seems as if the story isn’t finished. There’s another chapter in the cycle.
JKS is entering the transfer portal.
As he signed and enrolled at Oregon after National Signing Day, the transfer portal was the option for him rather than a release. This was reported by Brandon Huffman of 247Sports and Steve Wiltfong of On3:
“He was like man it wasn’t for him,” the source added. “He feels like his heart is not there. He felt like he should’ve made a different decision.”
On3 confirms that Cal is in the mix:
“Some of the same schools are in play from the last time,” the source said. “Georgia, Cal, all those same schools.”
It is possible the departure of Fernando Mendoza to Indiana reopened Sagapolutele’s eyes to Cal, as the path to being the starting quarterback for the Golden Bears next season is now wide open.
With Cal still likely looking for a quarterback in the transfer portal, this is a huge opportunity for the Bears to close and land a top young talent with the capability to start immediately. Greg Biggins of 247Sports had this scouting report:
"He has really had a great spring and summer including a recent top-11 finish at the prestigious Elite 11 Finals. You can make an argument he has the strongest arm in the country but doesn't just throw all fastballs and has really improved in his ability to change speeds and throw with touch.
"His deep-ball accuracy is among the best in the country as well and he can really layer the football into tight windows. His release is smooth and tight and he has improved in his ability to make quick decisions and get the ball out on time. ... All the physical tools are there and Keawe Sagapolutele has a very high ceiling and NFL potential if he continues to develop at his current rate."
It would be nice, but I've been battered enough by the Wilcox regime to not get my hopes up.
Come on back, no hurt feelings! We've even recruited more OL.
