In the last week, this dude has rocketed into the top 3 of my favorite Cal Bears of all-time…started with him shooting hoops with Bryson…Ott is one for the ages.
So glad I was looking at posts in reverse chronological order so that I saw this article before seeing Otto’s original post first. Only my dog is with me right now, so don’t think she can do CPR after I had a heart attack!
While I can’t measure “talent” he’s not on any of the “way too early Heisman lists” like ESPN have - its guys like Milroe at Alabama, Beck at Georgia, Dillion Gabriel now at Oregon, Travis Hunter at Colorado.
That's not surprising. ESPN is 99% hype machine and 1% journalistic institution. They are going to hype the regions / programs that get the most eyeballs, and we're just not that. We also don't have an aggressive athletic department or comms team, and I'm putting that rather mildly. Ott will never get a chance to win a fair fight in blue/gold, so he'll have to do something truly historic to start getting buzz.

I'm not super plugged in to college football but is it possible Ott is the best returning player in the country?

If Ott transferred to Alabama he would immediately go on the Heisman list, so I think ESPN just figures Cal won’t be good enough next year

Indeed. It's a popularity contest. But we're the smart guys that win out in the longer run (see Reggie Bust v. Marshawn).
In the Tedford era, we did have our Heisman campaigns. It seems like a long time ago.
Even then I don't recall any. Did Rodgers, Marshawn, Jahvid, Desean ever make the Heisman conversations?
Yes on the popularity crap. Example, look at the Tebow fiasco. He hardly made the first cut in the NFL.
