Justin Allegri is the new Cal play by play announcer
The successor to Joe Starkey has been found
Amidst the chaos of conference realignment, there was some crucial news in the broadcasting world. Longtime Cal radio announcer Joe Starkey hung up the headset after the end of 2022 and a search was taken out to find his successor. The Bears got their guy in Justin Allegri, who was most recently in the same position at his alma mater San Jose State.
As one would expect, Allegri has tons of experience at the D1 level, dawning the headset for the last 11 years for SJSU football and basketball. He has also dabbled in work in minor league baseball, serving as a part time voice of the San Jose Giants. He will work with Mike Pawlawski during Golden Bears football games, and at the moment there has been no naming of a basketball color analyst (Bill Walton is ready).
This is a job that Joe Starkey held to such a high standard for a long, long time. I'm never going to use the phrase, 'filling his shoes' or 'taking his job.' I'm always going to use the phrase, 'hoping to carry the baton.' Joe is Cal football and forever will be." - Justin Allegri via calbears.com
Welcome to the Cal family Justin and we all can’t wait to hear you on the airwaves!
Gonna need a good play by play announcer when there’s no TV coverage.
Good energy with lots of enthusiasm, good details on pre-snap portions of calls, play recaps are informative --- all in all, seems like a good choice
