Sounds like he's pretty decent at his job. Just need to give him some classic moments to call. Just need to make sure we have some basics like a football team, a media deal, and opponents.
I just listened to a couple of his samples from bearspot's posted link. I could actually tell what was happening on the field, something that was absent from his predecessor's broadcasts. Nice upgrade.
Regarding the “Predict the Cal Season” post on which my comment is not permitted because I have yet to upgrade to paid status, I was going to, and will now, write, “With apologies to Ezekiel, that ‘strike down upon their departing conference-mates with great vengeance and furious anger’ reference from ‘Pulp Fiction’ made me laugh. Thank you.”
I will probably continue for a while, due to habit, carefully watching the replays to confirm what I saw vs. what was described when I have Bear audio and the broadcast synced.
I actually like Bill Walton. He is a hippy at heart! Whenever I saw him doing broadcasts on the (soon to be extinct) Pac-12 network, he always had good things to say about Cal and the campus. He probably can score better weed in Berkeley than Westwood so maybe that had something to do with it.
Prattle on about Grateful Dead concerts, etc. in the middle of a basketball game. I’m sure he’s a nice guy and he was a great player, but enough is enough, IMHO.
The first time I heard Bill Walton, I hated him. But I learned to love him. Just had to realize that he's watching the game through a trans-dimensional, time-warped portal of some sort.
He doesn't add a lot of basketball value but he adds a ton of entertainment value.
Gonna need a good play by play announcer when there’s no TV coverage.
Good energy with lots of enthusiasm, good details on pre-snap portions of calls, play recaps are informative --- all in all, seems like a good choice

Oh. You mean stuff like:
"The Bears hand it off...he breaks through the line...and there he goes!"
He's at the 10, the 5. Touchdown Bears!...Oh what a Bonanza!"
One of my favorite frustrations was "He has his man..." which could mean:
the qb has spotted an open receiver
the qb has thrown to a receiver
the qb has thrown to a receiver who has made the catch
Welcome. BIG BIG act to follow.!
Welcome to the Mountain West Justin!

Anyone but Bill Walton!

He made those Cal games fun in the last couple of years when we weren't very good or entertaining.
I just got tired of hearing him
