Let's put Makale's 36.0% 3-point at Stony Brook last season into perspective. Cal was 33.5%, ranked 166th out of 350 D-1 teams last season. So he already improves Cal's shooting. If everyone shot as well as Makale, they'd be tied for 48th best 3-point shooter (top quartile).
I'm pretty cool with this, as it's likely the best we could hope for under the circumstances, unfortunately. A Kareem South-like shooting drop-off is probably to be expected, although hopefully not as pronounced as Kareem's '19/'20 splits - those went beyond typical P5 conf. adjustment. Bradley, Makale, the Ivy Leaguer, Grant & maybe the FR Celestine shooting...Kelly and Thorpe banging down low....here's to development from Lars and Kuany...maybe something from Bowser on the wing.....would love to see Dimmy the Greek develop into a rotation player.
Coach is building a solid, Mark Fox-team, en route to a solid, Mark Fox-5-year stretch of mostly competitive, slow-it-down, middle of the Conference play...OK for now I guess... it beats the hell out of the Wyking Jones disaster.
Third best player on a Stony Brook team that went 10-6 in one of the weakest conferences in D1 basketball. Shot 36% from the floor snd did not impact the game on the boards or through creating for teammates. PG sized but not a point guard.
That being said, a willing and capable shooter from long range. If he can stay on the floor at this level without being exposed, he’ll stretch the floor at least.
The talent level on next year’s roster remains roughly at last year’s level. At some point these coaches will have to land contested recruits at the high school level.
Looks like our starting PG...here's hoping Lars makes a jump from FR-SO and can anchor a low post that features, AK, Thorpe and a developing Kuany Kuany...
