Cal wide receiver & tight end Marquis Montgomery enters transfer portal
The California Golden Bears will lose one member of their receiving room.
After a year with the Bears and not being able to crack the 2023 rotation, Cal receiver Marquis Montgomery announced he is entering the portal.
Montgomery had three catches near the end of the 59-32 defeat to Washington, but did not record any other counting stats and mostly played in a special teams role the rest of the season.
Montgomery started with Cal as a wide receiver, but was unable to beat out the veterans. He then concluded as a tight end, but Jack Endries essentially locked down the starting tight end role early in the year and did not let go of it. With Ben Marshall and Jeffrey Johnson making most of the noise at tight end in spring ($), and the Cal wide receiving room flush with new talent, it seemed unlikely Montgomery was going to see the offensive side of the field much in 2023.
Also, the recent addition of Corey Dyches seems to indicate Cal was prepared for such a loss. So the Bears did have a plan in place for finding a new tight end.
Best of luck to Marquis in his next destination!
Appreciate his work and wish him good luck at his next school.
Wilcox must have brought his luggage to the Spring Showcase, and it's Louis.
