Football Recruiting: Colorado Grad Rransfer Cornerback Mekhi Blackmon Picks USC over Cal, Utah
The Bears miss out on a potential talent.
Colorado Buffaloes graduate transfer cornerback Mekhi Blackmon picked USC over Cal and Utah earlier today. There was some late buzz that Blackmon might pick Berkeley, but he eventually chose the Trojans, joining his Buff wide receiver teammate Brendan Rice.
Blackmon played junior college ball in the Bay at the College of San Mateo, joining Colorado in the class of 2018. His hometown is East Palo Alto, so there was thoughts he might end up back in the Bay to complete his career.
Blackmon compiled 41 tackles, four pass breakups, one interception in 2021 as one of Colorado’s starting cornerbacks. Blackmon earned All-Pac-12 team honorable mention for his efforts.
Still, Cal has landed two immediate defensive contributors to shore up some of the transfer losses the Bears experienced to the portal. Jackson Sirmon provides Cal with a replacement for Evan Tattersall at inside linebacker. Xavier Carlton can fill in the hole that J.H. Tevis left behind. And now Blackmon replaces Chigozie Anusiem on the roster, so the Bears can keep their numbers balanced.
Attention will now likely turn to the offense. Cal has landed Jack Plummer at quarterback. Who will the Bears look at next to get an immediate infusion of talent?
Pretty sure USC will be an offensive-minded team and so I'm more upset about them landing Brenden Rice (not to mention all the Oklahoma transfers), but Blackmon is still a better corner than anyone that played for USC last year. Colorado lost their top corner, Christian Gonzalez, to Oregon. Looks like the end of the Pac-12 Parity Era here with a lot of top talent coalescing on the top teams.
Hope he enjoys losing to us next year! ;-)
