For the past few years, this has been a real missing piece for the O Madsen wants to run: a big who can consistently hit the outside shot. Milos and Mantas have hit a couple of 3’s, but a stretch-4 could do wonders.

Question is what will it look like IF Dort in fact returns…

It would be nice of Dort to join two new recruits, making three of them in great depth.

From what I read online, MBB redshirts are only granted if 0 games are played in a given season, unlike football where you can play up to 4 and still redshirt, so Dort's 1 game sophomore season counts and his eligibility will be exhausted at the end of this year. He didn't play due to suspension, so a medical redshirt wouldn't be possible unless they can make that case somehow. He did miss the first several games of that season due to injury then played one game before being suspended for being charged with a felony, which was dismissed following a pre-trial diversion agreement, so maybe they can cook up a medical redshirt somehow, but I wouldn't bank on it. When he was signed 2 years ago the official Cal athletics press release stated 2 years of eligibility remaining and this is that second year. That's a bummer. I assumed he could get another year and thought I saw him listed as a redshirt sophomore last year, but it appears he was officially a true junior last year and true senior this year. We'll probably need a big bodied center from the portal for next year.

It will be interesting to watch, as eligibility rules are going the way of the dinosaur. There’s a 99.99% chance that Lee Dort and guys like him are playing college basketball next year now that the courts are involved.

Dort may have priced himself out of Cal’s budget unfortunately, but he’s almost certainly gonna get another year. But you’re right - were likely gonna need another big body.

Go Bears! 7'0" PF suggests to me that he can shoot. Madsen's cooking now.

Feeling so much optimism for football and hoops right now, I am struggling to process it.

It really feels like Madsen is building something. I still pine for the early days when his mom would post with us on this site, but this program really gives me an optimism for the future I don’t think I ever felt even when Monty was here.

It is tough to compare the two because of the utter insanity of this current NIL/transfer portal era. Cal remains woefully behind in MBB NIL support, unfortunately.

Madsen undoubtedly does plenty of really good things, and the program is on a positive trajectory for the first time in a decade. People are going to have to step up though and support the program, both financially and physically (in person), if MM is going to come anywhere close to having the success that Monty, and even Ben Braun, had here.

The NCAA MBB world now is just so different.

Reminds me of Chet Holmgren. Now if he can only play like him...
