Very good tournament this year, including final four Duke/UNC and NC games

But I don’t like Kansas or UNC so for me the best part was the Peacocks’ run

Pac12 flamed out demonstrating again you need to be able to play different style of games to survive

What a luxury to be able to bring a 2-time All Pac-12 player in off the bench.

After a shaky first half, Martin goes off in the second half and was one of the big reasons KU won the game

Besides his clutch 2nd half 3s, he made a huge block on UNC’s Love

He also got a lot of face time (too much in my opinion) on the podium and in One Shining Moment

UCLA goes down, west coast and Pac 12 are officially done

Expand full comment
hoopdreams's avatar

Disappointing. Not too long ago I thought AZ and UCLA had a shot at the Final Four

But UCLA started fading and I realized they don’t have the bigs to get there, and AZ drew a bad matchup for them. Still I was surprised that Kokoko got dominated on both ends of the court by undersized players

Besides Pac12 and western pride, it hurts Cal and the conference as our payout this year will be underwhelming

Expand full comment
hoopdreams's avatar

UCLA goes down as predicted because I said UCLA didn't have the bigs to win this game:

UCLA only played 1 C and 1 PF all game who combined for 8 points and 8 rebounds.

UNC only played 2 PF all game who combined for 27 points and 23 rebounds.

Plus UNC will be singing "All You Need is LOVE" after his 30 points on 11-24 shooting, including 6-13 threes, and 2-2 FTs, including two dagger 3s in crunch time.

Love outscored the UCLA J&J brothers who combined for only 24 points on 10-31 shooting, including 2-7 from three.

Jacquez killed them down the stretch...open looks too. At the end of the day, it’s still North Carolina, regardless of their seed #...still stacked with 4/5 * players and if one of them is gonna hit 6 of 13 3’s, many from deep with men in his face, you tip the cap. That’s how UCLA was gonna go down, despite the lack of bigs...if a guy got hot, like Terry in P12 Championship...otherwise, UCLA would grind them down.

I owe you Top Dog & Henry’s...we’ll talk glory days of Cal hoops back in the Braun era.

Interesting trend last night; in all 4 cases, tempo/pace lost to the lack of it. If that trend continues tonight (and in a way it already has, given Providence & St. Peters have reached the Sweet 16), rethinking recent thinking about preferred style of play for both recruiting and on floor success might be necessary.

Expand full comment
PawlOski's avatar

I don't think we have to worry about Fox turning out offensive players or schemes. Even though St. Peters makes their name playing defense, they still have incredible ball movement which compensates for their lack of size and athleticism comparative to their opponents. And even though the Duke/Texas Tech game was a slugfest, everyone on the court could make tough plays and baskets.

#1 seeds AZ and Zags go down

Arkansas plays one player over 6-6 (and it wasn't Vanover) and beats the Zags big/long front line. Tougher team wins.

Houston took AZ completely out of their game, and their bigs were almost shut out:

Koloko 2-6, 4 boards

Ballo 1-3, Zero boards

Tubelis 0-8, 5 boards, 4 TOs

And their guards?

Shooter shooter Krissa 1-7 (all 3 attempts) with the last two in the closing minutes: blocked, and open look air ball

AZ top gun Matherin 4-14, 5-8 Its for 15 points, 4 boards, 3 assists, 1 TO, 4 Fouls

The only AZ player who can sleep tonight feeling he at least played well, including some clutch players in the last 3 minutes of the game was Dalen Terry with 6-9, including 2-3 from deep, 3-4 FT for 17 points, 6 boards, 3 assists

Pac12 refs still hurting the conference, as the more aggressive, tougher teams beating the more talented, skilled teams

I think NC beats UCLA, but we'll see if UCLA can represent the entire western region of the US

Expand full comment
Jimmy Chitwood's avatar

P12 teams are never ready for that kind of physicality...Zona is used to whistles being blown when faced with the type of D that Houston threw at them. Been that way for years - the conference wants points, and FT’s count.

And hoopd, I’ll bet you Top Dog & a bevvie at Henry’s...I’ll roll with UCLA, and will give the 1.5...what say you?

Agree

From ESPN:

Houston's reputation since Kelvin Sampson took over in 2014 has been built on defense, toughness and aggressiveness -- at both ends of the floor. The Cougars are annually one of the best defensive teams in the country

"I watched Arizona play. I watched them play UCLA. I watched them play Colorado. I watched the way those teams guarded them, and I knew we weren't going to guard them like those teams did. Those teams just switched them. They let them be comfortable. We were going to make them uncomfortable. It's what we do."

OK, watching these games, one thing that is painfully clear, and that we've ALL discussed ad nauseam on W4C, is that nearly ALL of these tourney teams have a guy/multiple guys that can create their own shot off the dribble.

With Shepherd taking so many of Cal's shots and exhausting eligibility, the Bears really have NONE of those players on the 2022 roster at present. Celestine is probably the closest we have, and he may develop into that type player...Sam may as well, though Fox didn't give him much freedom in his limited minutes.

No wonder Fox team's always struggle to score. Anyone gonna be able to step up???

Depends on the kind of chips, I suppose ;-)

The funny thing is that there is probably room for a guy like Joel on an elite, winning team…but it’s back end of the rotation, providing solid D and running a 2nd team as a backup G on a team with shooters. But he can’t be your only damn PG on the f-ing roster…especially not shooting 48% from the charity stripe, which is inexcusable for a guy that has the ball in his hands as much as he does.

Yep, I got a similar tenor as well in my response from Jim, which while both disappointing from a message perspective and completely unsurprising, was nonetheless a class move, IMHO.

Always thought it was a total long shot for Knowlton to jettison Mark Fox, his hire, after 3 years, regardless of what happened and how much they struggled. The fact that the dialogue is even being had after year 3, however, gives me a glimmer of hope that Fox may be let go after the 2022-2023...we unfortunately figure to take a pretty big step back.
