where he poses a 507-208 coaching record since he was named head coach 2001... um, no, I think that's his real record

It's not Joe Pasternack, folks....

Expand full comment

oh no....

Expand full comment

Nope.

It's AAR, hopefully...maybe Madsen, maybe Stan, maybe Michaelson, maybe Miles (??)...

If it's not AAR, Knowlton may not want to show his face in Berkeley any more.

if its not AAR, he may not show his face one way or the other

What do you think of Michaelson? Hear he interviewed well, whatever TF that means...

Just do not see what Johnson has to offer that AAR or Pasternack do not. Like there is zero support, unless they are purely desperate at this point. Don’t answer that.

From a strictly basketball standpoint, Pasternack is a better candidate than Stan Johnson...no other way to spin it.

Who? Jesus.

Randy Bennett not coming to Cal? Next you'll be telling me that Steve Kerr and Rick Pitino have turned down the Bears job.

I hope something is announced this weekend, and certainly by the time the tourney has ended. Most of the good candidates if not already hired will shortly be employed by their new suitors. Certainly it is tough for Cal to try to hire a coach in view of the investigation of the AD. "I'm not likely to be here, but we'd love to offer you the head coaching position at the University of California."

My beloved alma mater had better get its shit together, and soon. Not only did we lose a bunch of starters in basketball to the transfer portal (which really isn't too surprising, but it still hurts), but Athletic's Bruce Feldman has referred to Berkeley as the "bizarro college football outpost". No wonder our recruiting has sucked, in both basketball and football. There is no reason for us not to succeed in these sports once we get the right leadership.

No news here, really. I'm convinced this hire will either be a dumpster fire or will get us all excited. No in between. Likely the former.

Expand full comment

Pasternack would have been the in between, so yeah, boom or bust.

Expand full comment

IF it's not AAR, or some out of nowhere candidate, then it's gonna be a bust. Stan would get them to average...in a few years.

I am cautiously optimistic we will like the hire....my only question is if it is Joe Pasternack, what was the hold up? I am hoping for JP or AAR, as I am not a huge fan of Rodney Terry, who IMO falls more in the Tim Miles category than Cuonzo...

Cuonzo and Monty were names that kind of came out of nowhere, though social media wasn't nearly as prevalent of a news source then....wonder if the hire is a name that hasn't been mentioned by anybody? Not sure Knowlton has that in him, but ya never know, especially if the donors are driving the bus and have ponied up big $...

We'll see...maybe early-to-mid next week....

Expand full comment

I guess Cuonzo is available. Counzo 2.0?

They reached out to him apparently…not as high on him after the Mizzou flameout with the Porters.

Oh yeah. Right.

I get it. Traffic can be rough going through the Caldecott. It's dark and scary. Berkeley isn't on the same BART line.

Expand full comment

No, but Rockridge is....maybe he didn't like the idea of then having to take the 51B up College...it can really bog down near Ashby.

Expand full comment

He'd be waiting and waiting at the bus stop to get to Haas...then three buses come all bunched together. He was just going to walk but the 51 could come at ANY MINUTE now and he couldn't risk being stuck between stops.

Expand full comment

I’ve actually walked it for just that reason!!!!

Expand full comment

When I used to park at Rockridge BART for Cal games, I would sometimes walk there but always walk back.

Expand full comment

I lived on College so know that experience well. Always fun when you could either walk/run and be a few minutes late or wait for the bus and be either on time or waaaaaay late.

Thanks for the scoop, TD!

no problem! Also per my sources (which is great as a college kid), my buddy at LMU ran into Stan Johnson at LMU at a baseball game he got told that he will interview but more than likely stay in LA. Would be a shock if Stan ends up being the choice imo. That's the benefit of being in college, I've got boots on the ground everywhere!

Good intel. I did like Stan as a candidate, but totally understand. Interesting that the process has taken this long...but better to get it right.

he will more than likely interview at Cal if approached but would most likely return to LA

Rumors abound that an offer is out to Stan Johnson...FWIW...

Don't you love the hot stove!!!

Expand full comment

An offer has not been made out to Stan and thank god it hasn’t that would be a disaster hire

Expand full comment

That aligns with what I have heard...multiple sources say it has...and multiple sources say it has not.

All depends on what sources you believe.

It would not be a disaster hire. It would absolutely be somewhat average, though, given the mediocre success at LMU.

Kinda like the last 3 times we hired a coach and he had zero interest.

Not to say we shouldn’t have kept trying, of course. But he’s very clearly wanted no part of Cal.
