Remembering Cal football legend Sean Dawkins (1971-2023)
The California Golden Bears wide receiver still holds the record for most receiving touchdowns at Cal.
Sean Dawkins has passed away at the age of 52.
Dawkins achieved notable success during his Cal years, particularly in the early 1990s. His athletic prowess and contributions to Cal's football team led them to consecutive appearances in the Copper and Citrus Bowls in 1990 and 1991. In his senior season in 1992, Dawkins secured 65 receptions for 1,070 yards and an impressive school-record 14 touchdowns, earning him the Pac-10 lead.
Dawkins's achievements at Cal were remarkable, setting records that endure to this day. He holds the record for career touchdown receptions (31) and season touchdown receptions (14 in 1992). Additionally, his single-season records for receptions and yards with 65 catches for 1,070 yards in 1992 still stand. He also made his mark in the rankings, placing seventh in career scoring with 186 points and third in career receiving yards with 2,124.
Dawkins earned a spot in the California Golden Bears Hall of Fame for his accomplishments.
The talented receiver's success at the college level garnered attention from NFL scouts, leading to his selection as the 16th overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 1993 NFL Draft. Dawkins spent five seasons with the Colts, amassing impressive stats with 251 receptions, 3,511 yards, and 12 touchdowns. His subsequent NFL journey included stints with the New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks for two seasons, and a final full season with the Jacksonville Jaguars and a last stint with the Minnesota Vikings.
Rest in peace Sean. Go Bears forever.
He was one of the Bears I loved watching as a kid in Memorial. Such a loss.
I loved to watching this guy play while I was attending Berkeley in the early 90’s.
His play and those teams sparked my love of Cal football that lasts until this day, always hoping for a return to those glory days.
Way too soon.
