Cal special teams coach Charlie Ragle to become new Idaho State coach
The last coach of year 1 of the Wilcox era has moved up to get his own gig.
Cal’s long-time special teams coach Charlie Ragle has apparently taken the Idaho State job. Ragle was the prime conduit for Cal’s recruiting prowess in the state of Arizona, helping land recruits like BRETT JOHNSON and Kai Milner.
Ragle’s outfit was inconsistent on the field of play with occasional mishaps (2020’s Big Game and Oregon State games) and big plays by Nikko Remigio in the kickoff return game.
The unit did improve in 2021 a bit, particularly in the kicking game. Cal ranked 53rd in punting yards per kick behind Jamieson Sheehan, and Dario Longhetto converted nine of his final ten field goals on the year. However the Bears made critical special teams errors in several losses in September—had one or two gone the other way, the Bears are probably bowling.
Ragle was the last staffer from Justin Wilcox’s first coaching staff at Cal. Interestingly, all the Cal assistants from that staff have moved onto better gits
Offensive coordinator Beau Baldwin (Cal Poly head coach)
Offensive line coach Steve Greatwood (retired)
Quarterbacks then tight ends coach coach Marques Tuiasosopo (offensive coordinator at Rice)
Wide receivers then running backs coach Nick Edwards (OC/WRs coach at Cal Poly)
Defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter (now defensive coordinator at Texas Tech after stopover at Oregon).
Defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro (defensive coordinator at UCLA)
Outside linebackers, then defensive line coach Tony Tuioti (defensive line coach at Nebraska)
Defensive backs coach Gerald Alexander (secondary coach with the Miami Dolphins)
Special teams coach Charlie Ragle (head coach at Idaho State)
Ragle was the former high school head coach at Chaparral as well as Arizona’s special teams coach.
