College Football Recruiting: TE Chinedu Udeogu to grad-transfer to Illinois, return to his homestate and old position
Congrats and best of luck to Chinedu!
On the day of his virtual Blockeley commencement ceremony, Chinedu Udeogu announced that he will be grad-transferring to our victims of the 2019 Redbox Bowl—the Illinois Fighting Illini.
This is a homecoming of sorts for Udeogu in two senses. Firstly, his hometown is listed as Inverness, IL, which is just over 150 miles from the University of Illinois. Secondly, Udeogu appears to be returning to his former group of the defensive line after recently switching to tight end for the Bears.
Udeogu redshirted in 2016 in Sonny Dykes’s final season in Berkeley. In the next two seasons, Udeogu played in all 25 games as a defensive end and as a DE/OLB/edge rusher. 2019 started in the same vein with Udeogu playing in the first two games in that edge role before being injured. When he recovered, Udeogu switched to tight end, where he practiced for the very, very short 2020 spring football season.
Cal will potentially be losing three tight ends in the past calendar year with Udeogu joining then-redshirt-freshman McCallan Castles (who left the program in September 2019) and rising-redshirt-junior Collin Moore (who has reportedly entered the transfer portal).
Best of luck to Chinedu and congrats on graduating from the #1 public university in the world!
Hope he gets to play at Illinois and avoids the injury bug.
