TCU hires away Cal safeties coach Tre Watson
The California Golden Bears might have two new position coach vacancies to fill.
The California Golden Bears will have some coaching searching to do in the winter months. Pete Thamel of ESPN reports Cal safeties coach Tre Watson is moving onto TCU as the new position coach of safeties and nickels, as well as defensive passing game coordinator. Why must Sonny Dykes keep taking from us?
In tandem with Cal cornerbacks coach Terrence Brown, the Golden Bear secondary were able to generate 15 of Cal’s 17 interceptions on the season. Watson has been critical to the newest iteration of the Takers locking down the backside of the field, as Cal finished with a top 25 passing efficiency defense in 2024.
Three former Cal safeties that Watson coached are currently situated on NFL rosters—Daniel Scott with the Indianapolis Colts, Patrick McMorris with the Miami Dolphins, and Elijah Hicks with the Chicago Bears. Craig Woodson is also trying his hand at making an NFL roster this season.
Cal is also likely going to have to replace running backs coach Aristotle Thompson, who is apparently in negotiations for a similar role at Northwestern.
Good luck to Tre on his next opportunity!
I believe coach Alexander is on the market. Would love to bring him back.
Never sure how to take these… on another topic, anyone see the inane and frankly wrong Scott Ostler piece in the Chronicle about how Cal and Stanford are losing out in the Transfer portal, demise of the Pac 12, etc. Does he even follow college football??
