Cal better be ready for this one with some significant offensive changes. Otherwise, UNLV could turn out to be just formidable enough to make for a long afternoon and an especially long flight home to Berkeley. I am counting on this win plus Stanford to get Cal to 4-8 for the season, optimist that I am!
All the talk about the chancellor, the GM and the HC, all Cal guys, being in alignment. Then Cal hires a young OC with no coordinator experience and keeps an OL coach who’s guys haven’t been consistent/gelled as a unit. There is time to right the ship, but what I’ve seen is an offense woefully out of alignment. Multiple times it’s looked like the team is at a loss when plan A is not working. Players appear unsure what the playbook arms them with in terms of secondary outlets when a defense detects what they’re primarily trying to do. I can only partly credit the portal era with this mishegoss. Transferring into this from other programs requires quick learning, but do our new guys have the moxy to convert their skill sets into success given a disjointed situation? I could understand how it would look unsettled for half the first game, but we’re at game five and the players seem unsure where this is going. UNLV’s defense doesn’t have to be all that good to keep Cal’s offensive weapons on the sideline, because it doesn’t matter how many ballyhooed skill guys you have if they don’t get the system down pat by this stage of the season. I hope I’m wrong and that things suddenly snap into place, but the prospects for a potent attack appear meager at the moment. I hope there is a way Somerville’s brilliance can emerge, but so far this ain’t it. Is the necessary leadership for this offense to succeed lacking, in the booth, on the sideline, and on the field? Or, are a few quick cut, crossing/rub routs to get guys open, some blocking success/aggression, better communication player to player and between players and coaches, and creative/user friendly play-calling + confident versatility all that’s needed? Well, of course it’s everything. Show me the way, Bears!
Good post, thanks Yoav. Perhaps we will see an improved Cal offense go up against this defense on Saturday. It could happen, right? Coach says he has made some changes. Hope so. Go Bears!
I’m hoping the Cal defense can cover for our poor offense. The game has the potential to be a low scoring affair. I have not been impressed by what I have seen from UNLV QB Jackson Arnold.
For obvious reasons yes, and also for this opponent too considering UNLV colors are red and silver. Also, we always want the house to lose, just not the home team when it’s us!
I don’t think I’ve heard of needing a code, this is when you’re logged into your Substack? That might be a bug. Can you login and post your issue with Substack support https://substack.com/support
For whatever it's worth, my bank web site requires a code in addition to a finger print ID every single time I check my balance, even if I just checked it a bit earlier. They told me it is their security requirement and can't be changed.
Perhaps Oskidunker might check with his ISP to see if this is being triggered by them or another program on his phone or computer (?)
Great writeup, but I will never "put it all on red."

Trees are looking better than the Bears at this point....

Hmmm, older, experienced savvy HC in Mullen vs. our newbie, regardless of boastful intentions.....better show me.

I am hoping that Cal Offense focus and pay attention. One play at a time kinda thing. Go Bears💙🏈💛
Please put our chips all on black, not on red. Go Bears!
